Hymn Notes:
Break Thou the Bread of Life (460) from Chautauqua Carols, 1878
It is all too easy to be content with merely reading the Bible through,
but the author of this hymn, Mary Lathbury (1841-1913), asks for
more—that we seek the Lord beyond the sacred page and find the truth
which is God. Daughter of a Methodist minister, Lathbury wrote the
hymn for a study group at Chautauqua NY the summer of 1877. She
and Methodist Bishop Vincent were partners in the promotion of Chau-
tauqua. The composer of the tune BREAD OF LIFE was William Sherwin
who wrote the tune that same summer. He was a school teacher a taught
voice at the New England Conservatory of Music along with being mu-
sic director for Chautauqua’s choir. Note that although the text men-
tions bread, it is not a communion hymn.

*A HYMN CELEBRATING SUNDAY WORSHIP “You Call Us, Lord, to Worship ” LANCASHIRE
You call us, Lord, to worship; the day is set aside.
Your love is overflowing; the doors are opened wide.
Yet as we see your goodness, we see what we have been.
And so we humbly ask you, "Forgive us of our sin!" We are forgiven people; we know your love's embrace.
The peace of Christ is with us; forgiveness fills this place.
We hear your word in scripture, in sermon and in song.
Again, again, you tell us: we're loved and we belong. We share our joys and sorrows and then we offer prayer
For people who are hurting, for nations everywhere.
We bring our tithes and offerings, returning what is yours,
For what we keep may vanish, but what we give endures. We celebrate your love, Lord, with water, wine and bread.
For at your font we're welcomed and at your feast we're fed.
We pray the prayer you taught us; we sing your praise and then
Through daily, faithful living, we worship you again. Text: Copyright © 2002 by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette. All rights reserved.
CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Together) O Holy One, we confess that it is not easy for us to confront the sin that divides us from you and from one another. We prefer prayer to be comforting, not challenging or correcting; assuring, not inquiring or requiring. Forgive us for failing to trust your purposes for our lives, and that you come to us not with the desire to punish but to heal and save us. Draw us close to you, O God, that we may live faithfully and love graciously, as you have come to us in Jesus Christ. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON
