LET THE RIGHT ONE INTRAILER ANALYSIS

TITLES

The first thing that appears in ‘Let the Right One in’ film trailer is the distributors logo/brand. This is a method of advertising in a way to try and promote the film to those who are aware of who 6-SHOOTER FILM SERIES and MAGNET are.The difference with the opening of this film compare to Cabin in the Woods and Stoker is that they don’t have titles appear first thing in the trailer.

ESTABLISHING SHOTThe establishing shots that appear in the trailer, make it clear to the audience where the film is set and what time period it is in the film. In this case it is filmed during winter. The form of the establishing shot shows the same colour scheme seen on the film poster, which is blue, black and white. The costume that the 2 characters are wearing is traditionally worn in very cold countries that snow a lot. We are aware that the film is shot in Sweden as the film comes along with subtitles for the non Swedish audience to understand what is being said in the dialogue.

This dialogue infers that the subgenre of the film is ‘VAMPIRE.’ It also will appeal to horror fans who are particular interested in the vampire genre/plot. However in this shot we are unaware to who the boy is talking too. In most vampire films the vampire is usually a dark haired, pale male, and the other characters tend to be in their late teens. However in this trailer we are only introduced to a much younger audience who perhaps indicates that the vampire will be someone who is also young, yet still has the classic characteristics of a vampire.

SIMILARTIES TO POSTERIn this long shot shot we see a girl (who perhaps is the antagonist) in the distance. Standing the same way that the mysterious figure in the film poster was standing. This hints to the audience that the girl could possibly also be the girl in the poster. Her body language is some what similar to how people associate vampires to stand, as they tend to be straight forward and show no emotion.

TARGET MARKETIn this high angle shot we can see a love note written on a piece of scrap card. Although non Swedish audience will be able to understand Swedish, the ‘heart’ drawing on the note connotes love. In this post modern era, vampire genre has evolved in many ways. By adding romance to the genre it appeals to a younger audience who are interested in vampire films that include the untraditional love story, such as Twilight.

DEATHThe mid shot shown here is of a body being burnt. This is a iconic vampire convention, as Vampires burn from sunlight. The room is set out to look empty and almost like a mental institution with the way the wall and bed is clinically white. The audience can insinuate that the who ever the patient is in the bed they are also a vampire and that in the film there may be more than one vampire.

A classic horror shot. This classic horror shot is shot from an extreme high angle/ bird eye view. It is almost as if the audience can see the action happening from the Vampire’s point of view, as Vampire’s tend to stand on top of tall buildings looking down.

CHARACTERS

Girl: Dark hair Pale skin Dark eyesContrast compare to the boy. Usually in Vampire films, the antagonist is a male. This implies that the girl is gong to be a strong character with a lot of strength.

Boy: Pale skin Blonde hairYou’d expect this description for a female character. Suggest that the boy is going to be vulnerable and seek friendship in the girl.

TITLESThe ending title of the trailer, is the title of the film and reviews from horror magazines. The typography of title is in red. Red connotes danger, blood, and aggression. However it also connotes love and romance which are themes that has been shown in the trailer. The titles appearing at the end is the same method that is used in Stoker, which makes the audience engage more in the action rather then getting interrupted with titles. This was done in Cabin in the Woods, where there was titles in between the actions.

CONVENTIONS OF HORROR

A convention of horror that is not shown in the trailer is blood. The lack of dialogue in the film makes it difficult to interact with the audience. It

also makes it difficult to get a gist of the plot. Only children visible in the trailer: the absence of grown-ups makes the film

unsettling as the children are having disturbing conversations. This makes it uncomfortable to bare, however it engages the audience it raises a lot of

questions such as: Why are they having these conversations? Where are the grown ups?

Children – innocent / evil Eerie slow music

Heightened sound Dead bodies being dragged

away Fall off huge buildings

Isolation/ establishing shots Long road with police car

Darkness: mysterious as you are not able to see the snow

Snow Coldness

Screaming Quick cuts
