The genomes of unrelated persons differ by several million base pairs. This genetic variation is not taken into consideration in current standard drug therapy, which can be a reason for insufficient therapeutic effect and increased toxicity. In this seminar on pharmacogenomics and personalised medicine, we will discuss what makes us unique, how genetic variation is studied, how experts of different disciplines join forces to provide the patient with a custommade drug therapy, and what challenges we need to overcome for the medicine of tomorrow to become routine today.
