10 Types of typefaces: A few typefaces are given to students. They are asked to classify the fonts into 3 categories: serif, san serif, and others.After the activity, students are introduced the fact that a serif is a line which extends from the stroke end of the character.

2 Students are introduced to the various text attributes, i.e. typeface, font style and font size.

2 Font sizes are introduced. Students are reminded that the unit is point (pt), where 1 inch = 72 pt = 2.54 cm.

6 The following font styles are introduced:boldface, italics, underline, strikethrough, outline (shadow is excluded because it is hard to print in a worksheet.)Students are asked to do a worksheet to recognize the font styles used in the samples.

Note: The other lesson in will be used for distribution and checking of the First Test. Hence I do not expect to finish the whole chapter in the lesson. The parts “readability of a document” and “document file formats” will be taught in the next lesson.

Expected Difficulties

Difficulties SolutionsStudents are very weak in English in general.

Some verbal instructions are given bilingually, so the weaker students can understand the instructions and gradually switch to English.

Instructions in worksheets are made as short as possible.

Allow students to say new terms in Chinese. Of course students are required to learn the same term in English terms after the discussion.

Great individual difference. Encourage students to discuss in groups of two or three, so weaker students can ask their classmates for help.

Add an extended activity in the worksheet, so students may try them if they finish the class work early. Note: the extended activity requires searching for information not inside the textbook.

After nearly eight years of work, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has finalized the HTML5 standard, bringing the basic Web technology firmly into the era of mobile devices and cloud-driven rich Internet applications.

Problems with justificationJustification sometimes leads to typographic anomalies. One example: when justification is used in narrow columns, extremely large spaces may appear between words on lines with only two or three words.

Another example: when the spaces between words line up approximately above one another in several loose lines, a distracting river of white space may appear. Rivers appear in right-aligned, left-aligned and centered settings too, but are more likely to appear in justified text, because of the additional word spacing. Since there is no added white space built into a typical full stop (period), other than that above the full stop itself, full stops only marginally contribute to the river effect.
