Lent Lent is the 40-day church season before Easter. It is a time for reflection, penitence, and preparation for new life. The focus is on Jesus’ ministry and his journey to the cross. Forty is a significant number in the Bible. It rained for 40 days during The Flood, the people of Israel wandered for 40 years in the wilderness and Jesus spent 40 days in the desert. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday which this year is February 14. It leads to Holy Week which includes Sunday of the Passion/Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. The colors used are purple, scarlet and black.

Christmas Poinsettias

Thank you to all the generous Hosanna members who gifted their poinsettias to the church. When it was time to pack away our Christmas decorations, the plants were still beautiful. I called Golden Living Center Southeast and asked if their residents might enjoy them. I was enthusiastically welcomed me to deliver them assuring me they would be warmly received. Double bagged to protect against the 35 below wind chill, all 14 plants survived the transport. Sure enough, a circle of appreciative

residents greeted me, each selected a poinsettia, shared some recollections, then wheeled and strolled their plants to their rooms smiling broadly. No down coat or mittens can bring you that kind of warmth!

I was honored to represent Hosanna with this simple gesture and pray I am permitted to repeat this deeply humbling, gratifying experience... perhaps after both Easter. Again, thank you for providing the beautiful plants for these lovely folks. Ruth Vining

2Cor 9:13 And because of the proof which this service of yours brings, many will give glory to God for your loyalty to the gospel of Christ, which you profess, and for your generosity in sharing with them and everyone else.

Greetings Hosanna friends: It is hard to believe I have finished my year as Council President. It has been a great learning opportunity for me and has helped me to understand what takes place both inside and outside the walls of Hosanna – so much more than the Sunday morning worship services and Sunday School. This congregation does so much for our members and others in the commu-nity. Our mission statement – “Gathered to Grow and Sent to Serve” is so visi-ble through us. We all grow together as we serve others, whether it is through

our food ministry, mission support, Empty Nest sitter service, and many other programs.. I greatly appreciate all the support of the staff of Hosanna and the Council members as we managed the business of the church this past year. You are an amazing group of people and devote a lot of time and energy in the work that you do. A special thanks to the outgoing council members –Terri Ashworth, Outreach Advocate and Ron Machacek, Fellowship Advocate - for your service, commit-ment and contributions to our congregation. May the Lord guide Lisa King and the 2018 Church council as they serve the Hosanna congregation in the coming year. God’s Blessings, Laurie Maidl

Submit a Design for a Hosanna T-Shirt by February 4 Be creative and submit an idea for a design for a Hosanna T-shirt by February 4. These T-shirts will be worn by the musical

cast. In addition the whole congregation will have an opportunity to order one. The design should include these words “Hosanna Lutheran”, “Gathered to Grow” and “Sent to Serve” and use one or two colors. The design could be only for the front or for front and back (this will cost an additional $2 to $3). It is up to you whether to write down an idea, draw a picture, or create a design using a computer (8 ½ x 11 in). Put your designs with your name on the back in the designated tray on the counter in the main office or email to [email protected]. A single idea or a combination of ideas might be used to come up with the final design.

th musi-

cal. The musical will be presented on March 4 in the morning at Hosanna and in the afternoon as an outreach performance at Samaritan Bethany. The story is about a team who is running the race of life, symbolic of the Christian life. With the guidance of their coaches, these teammates are learning that the secret to running life's grace race is to follow in Jesus’ steps, but in their shoes. They learn the value of forgiveness, perseverance, love, and the value of working as a team. Running with faith, they look to the great cloud of witnesses cheering them on and consider the signs they are leaving for those who will come behind. The musical is based on Hebrews 12:1-2.

The cast is open to Kindergarten students – adults and there is still time to join the team! Fill out a registration form on the kiosk in the gathering area if you are interested in participating. Rehearsals begin on Monday, January 29 at 6:30 pm. The main chorus rehearsals will be on Mondays with cast rehearsals also on Thursdays in February and March 1. The people only in the chorus will have fewer rehearsals. Saturday morning rehearsals will be February 17 and 24 and March 3.

Help is also needed with the production crew. Sign up on the sheet at the Welcome Center if you are interested in assisting with the set, props, costumes and/or publicity. Contact Nancy Wales ([email protected]) if you have questions.

Hosanna Lutheran Church January 9, 2017 Council Minutes

Council Attendees: Pastor Bill Meiers, Ron Machacek, Les Fullem, Terri Ashworth, Kathy Rucker, Paul Anderson, Laurie Maidl, Lisa King, Chris Meiers. Nancy Wales, and Darcy Youngstrom were in attendance.

Staff & advocate reports were highlighted. Music & Worship: The children’s Christmas program took a lot of time and preparation but was delightful with a connection to the Advent theme. Christmas Eve morning worship had 62 attendees, the 4:00pm worship had 209 attend, and the one evening 7:00 pm worship included 75. Katrina Davis played cello and added to the worship experience for two Wednesday Advent services.

Renewed effort could be put into encouraging the 7th

through 12th graders to participate more in worship.

The Living Lutheran has offered ideas to help with that and may be tried. The Rochester Public Schools may not be meeting the needs of their choir members given what is sometimes seen at Hosanna. The delivery of Christmas treats and greetings to people who can’t easily get out on their own is greatly appreciated. Is there a way to do that more than just Christmas time? Elna Knutson’s birthday celebration was wonderful - can Hosanna celebrate birthdays for more senior members?

At this time the results of the Sound System walk through will not cause any radical changes. It has raised several questions that need to be answered before a final decision is made. Could a couple outlets be moved? Should we get digital mixing boards? Should a mixing board for Grace/Exodus be added? Would it be a benefit to use a laptop/tablet/smart phone from a pew to adjust the sound? Could group microphones be used instead of one hung from the ceiling? How close do we want to stay to the original bid? Would we have good enough audio to stream it online? Is it good to rely solely on Wi-Fi for the sound system? Could there be assigned settings for each group?

Next Council meeting on Tuesday, February 13 7pm.

Hosanna’s Pantry February 23 and 24

Bring your family along to help with Hosanna’s Pantry in 2018. Helping to provide food to families in need, is a wonderful way to start the new year. Members ages 5 and up can help. This is also a great way for high school students to earn service hours. Help is needed with the pantry set up on Friday morning, February 23 at 10:00 am. Or you can help greet families, help them shop, carry out groceries or clean up on Saturday, February 24 from 9:00—11:30 am. There’s a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center or you may contact Barb Anderson at [email protected] with questions.

Samaritan Bethany Worship Assistants Needed in March

Hosanna has been asked to provide worship assistants for Samaritan Bethany for the month of March. Samaritan Bethany is a senior care

community located at 24 Eighth Street Northwest. Four to five volunteers are needed for each service. Volunteer arrival times are 8:30 a.m. for the first service and 9:30 a.m. for the second service. Duties include assisting wheelchair-bound residents to and from the worship service. Both the residents and staff members greatly appreciate our help! Sign-up sheets and more information are located at the Welcome Center. Please contact Keith Johnson at [email protected] or 507-252-8287 if you have any questions.

Community Food Response North Hosanna has committed to providing volunteers to pick up, sort, and distribute food for Community Food Response North (CFR North) on the first Monday of each month. CFR North is located at The Exchange, 3945 Tenth Avenue Northwest. Shifts are 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. and 4:45 – 6:30 p.m. More information and sign-up sheets are located at the Welcome Center. Souper Bowl of Caring

MORE THAN 28 YEARS AGO, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat.” Since that day, more than $135 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It

has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Big Game into the na-tion’s largest celebration of giving and serving. Be part of this movement that is sharing God’s love with those in need. So how can YOU help change the game in ending hunger?

Starting now through February 14th (Ash Wednesday) bring in CANS of

food to help support our Sharing and Caring Pantry and Helping Hands Pantry. Place them in the bin in the Narthex.

Book Discussion - February 17

Everyone is welcome to join the book discussion group which meets on the third Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. Members take turns bringing coffee and treats. It’s a very informal, lively discussion, and the books vary from classics to popular fiction or non-fiction. The book to be discussed in February is Five Presidents by Clint Hill. It’s the story of the man who was the secret service agent guarding Jackie Kennedy when

President Kennedy was shot. He tells the story of his career in the secret service, starting with guarding the mother of Mamie Eisenhower, all the way through his promotion to the President’s detail during the Johnson and Nixon presidencies. Clint Hill also has a Hosanna connection – he’s Karla Weis’ second cousin. The book to be discussed in March is The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George.

Regular Sunday School Sessions (held from 9:15a—10:15 on Sunday mornings) will resume

on Sunday, Feb. 4th.

Thank You

A special thank you to all the individuals that assisted with various Sunday morning and

Wednesday evening projects during the month of January. A special thanks to the middle school

youth that assisted with the PJ/Movie Day, Camp Sunday, Story Time, Art for Others, Play Time

and Bundles of Love inventorying. Additionally, a special thank you to Elna Knutson for her

participation in the distribution of the Spark Story Bible to our 3 year old children during worship.

Fellowship Ministries “gathered to grow…”

LENTEN SUPPERS

The time for Hosanna’s traditional Lenten Soup Suppers has nearly arrived. All members can participate in this priceless fellowship opportunity, which will again help make the Season of Lent a special time at Hosanna. As in past years we will need volunteers (individuals or groups) to provide soup (see below) and bread. In addition, we will need people to help serve and cleanup. You may ask what do I need to know? Well here are

some details: When: February 28 March 7 March 14 March 21 Time: 6:00 pm What: 8-9 soups 7 breads 3-4 servers/cleanup How: Sign up sheets in the Narthex

If enough volunteers don’t step forward, we still have food, however it will not be as good. For further information or if you are too shy to use the signup sheets at church you can call Paul Anderson @ 282-7213, 951-6903 or email at [email protected].

Hosanna’s Prayer Chain

Hi. I’ve been the coordinator for Hosanna’s Prayer Chain for the last several years. It’s a very powerful and caring ministry that goes on “behind the scenes.” When we first started the prayer chain over 30 years ago, it was a phone calling tree. It was often hard to reach

people, and getting the same information out to everyone in a timely way was often difficult. Now we use email so everyone gets the same message within a few minutes. We’ve had several prayer chain coordinators over the years. I started coordinating when I was still Hosanna’s secretary after the last coordinator stopped doing it, just to keep it going. When I retired as secretary in 2015, I thought it would be an easy ministry to keep doing from home. It’s been a rewarding but sometimes challenging ministry to coordinate. I feel being trained as a Stephen Minister has helped me do a better job when someone calls with a prayer request. It’s so important to listen for what the person requesting prayers is asking for. Sometimes there are lots of details and sometimes just a few words. I try to fill in the feelings expressed with the words I use. I find it’s the most difficult to share news of the death of one of our members. But it’s so important for members to lift each other up with their prayers. It can bring such comfort and healing. If you’d like to request prayers for yourself or a loved one, just type your request in an email to me at [email protected], call my cell, 507-951-6848, or go to Hosanna’s website and click on “submit prayer request” underneath Contact us at the bottom of the front page and fill in the form that pops up. Many Hosanna members will be praying for you. If you’d like to be a part of this ministry that brings support and compassion to others through the power of prayer, just send me your email address the same way, and I’ll add you to the list. Blessings~ Barb Anderson

President’s Page

Blessings Hosanna friends! It is indeed a privilege to start this year as Hosanna’s President. A little bit about myself: My family includes my spouse Kelly, my sons, Ryan married to Cari and their two children: Ava and Jack, Steven married to Holly and their two children: Weston and Jett, and Michael. I also have two step sons, Brandon married to Andrea and Kyle. I have been a member of Hosanna since 1987…My son Michael was baptized here. All three of my sons received their first Bibles here, had their First

Communion and were confirmed at Hosanna. My son, Ryan, was married here and his children, my grandchildren, Ava and Jack were baptized here. Kelly and I were married at Hosanna in 2013. So Hosanna is a BIG part of our lives. I am a RN and work at Mayo Clinic in the department of transplantation. I evaluate and care of those who wish to donate a kidney or a portion of their liver to a recipient in need of a transplant. I follow and guide them throughout their journey. It is truly a rewarding job: seeing the generosity of others who give totally of themselves.

I would like to take the time to thank our outgoing members of the church council. Laurie Maidl: you have led us with faith, grace and dignity. I admire you and your faith and thank you for your leadership!

Terri Ashworth: Outreach Advocate: your commitment and passion for outreach was evident in all you do and have done. I admire you and your faith and thank you for your leadership! Ron Machacek: Discipleship Advocate: your commitment and your passion for Stephen ministry is evident! I admire you and your faith and thank you for your leadership.

Thank you to the nominating committee: Bill Weis, Karl Dirksen, Larry Larsen, Stephanie Stevens and Rachel Grey. I appreciate your time and commitment during the past couple of months! To the remaining council members and newly elected council members, I look forward to working together at Hosanna and beyond to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and our Faith.

When thinking about Hosanna, this came to my thoughts: The 4 F’s: FAITH, FELLOWSHIP, FAMILY and FRIENDS: That’s what I see at Hosanna! You have seen the changes in my family; you have always supported, prayed and been here for us! We share our faith together! We share fellowship in so many ways together! You are our family, our friends, a part of our lives, and for this I am eternally grateful!

1 John 1: 3: “What we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us: and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ” Faith, Fellowship, Family and Friends: That is Hosanna!!!

In closing, our mission statement states, “As a Christian family of faith, we’re gathered to grow and sent to serve.” Christ is alive and well within the walls of Hosanna but also outside the walls of Hosanna!

Blessings to each and every one of you today and always.

God Bless, Lisa

Pastor Meier’s Page Members and Friends of Hosanna,

February 14, Ash Wednesday marks our entrance into the 40 days of Lent. Ash Wednesday happens to fall right on Valentine’s Day this year. A great way to celebrate the day of love is to give thanks in our worship for the inestimable love God has given to us in sending His only begotten son, Jesus, our Savior and Lord.

This Year’s theme is entitled: “A Lenten Journey to the Easter Vigil”. Historically, the Christian church baptized those who were studying as catechumens, the new to the faith, on the eve before Easter. Our congregation will be using portions of the East Vigil Service on each of the six midweek Lenten services.

February 14 – Ash Wednesday An overview and historical look at the Easter Vigil will set the theme for our journey together through the Lenten season.

February 21 – Creation The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the beginning of life for us all. Just as the creator God forms the earth out of chaotic waters and shines light onto primeval darkness, so the resurrection of Christ pulls us from death through baptism into fruitful life with all the good earth and enlightens our life in Christ.

February 28 – Flood In the story of the flood, God re-creates the world by sending forty days of rain to destroy all that is evil. In the resurrection of Christ, God is making all things new, and in our baptism, we are cleansed and brought to new life.

Mark 7 – Deliverance at the Red Sea In this archetypal story, God vanquishes evil and liberates the oppressed. By the resurrection, God liberates us from slavery to sin and brings us through the waters of baptism to safety.

March 14 – Salvation Freely Offered to All In this reading from Isaiah, resurrection is like a free feast, baptism like water for the thirsty, God like rain on the earth.

March 21 – Deliverance from the Fiery Furnace For each of us there will be a time when we are engulfed by fire. Because of the resurrection of Christ, we can be confident that the Son of God will be with us, no matter what or where the furnace. Come, walk in the light of Christ as we journey together to the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus on Easter.

Yours in Christ, Pastor Bill Meiers
