Dear Friends,

Welcome to this new-look monthly newsletter for St Alban’s. I am most grateful to David Engelby for the redesign and to Scott McAusland for kindly agreeing to edit the newsletter for the interim period until a more permanent editor can be found. There is so much happening at St Alban’s, so do also keep an eye on our website, http://www.st-albans.dk/ as well as our noticeboards. It’s not just the Roman Catholic church that’s facing a period of transition right now. We are going through our own times of transition this Lent. Our new archbishop, Justin Welby, will be enthroned into the Augustine Chair at Canterbury Cathedral as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury on 21 March. It will broadcast live on BBC TV, as he takes the oath of office with his hand placed on the bible that was brought to Canterbury by the first archbishop, Saint Augustine. He becomes the leader of the Worldwide Anglican Communion, and our spiritual leader. Archbishop Justin knows this diocese well. He once worshipped at our Anglican Church in Paris and was a member of the Church Council.

The Anglican Communion is an incredible global network of churches, as we heard on Sunday 10 February when Canon Ulla Monberg gave us a presentation of her recent participation in the Anglican Consultative Council that met for three weeks in Auckland late last year. Another transition is that Peter Rohling - our organist at St Alban’s for the last 25 years - has decided to retire after a quarter of a century. I am deeply grateful for all Peter has given us, playing the organ and leading our choir with deep dedication and comittment. Our music is a vital part of our worhsip. Thank you Peter. Lent, the 40 days leading up to Holy Week and Easter, is starting on 13 February, and I do commend the ‘Abiding’ Study Group that will meet after the service in The Lady Chapel at 1215 until 1300 on the five Sundays of Lent (see the following page for more details). Grace and Peace,Jonathan

New MU President On 1 February Bishop Geoffrey Rowell formally admitted Mrs Carol Johnston as the Diocesan President of the Mothers’ Union (MU). Carol assumes this post following on the pioneering work of Barbara Woods who was our first Diocesan MU President and who tirelessly worked for the promotion and support of the MU in our congregations.

All are welcome to the Lent Study Group

Sundays 17, 24 Feb, and 3, 10, 17 March at 1215 (until 1300) in the Lady Chapel.

‘Abiding’ speaks of the centrality of order, consistency and continuity in the Christian tradition, of God’s commitment to us and ours to our communities.

The kind of ‘abiding’ that Jesus calls his followers to is one of relinguishment, openness and change, living a life out of one’s own control so as to ‘abide’ in him.

Drawing on the wisdom and imagery of modern fiction, film and art, and key figure in classical Christian tradition, Ben Quash’s book creatively explores the implications that ‘abiding’ has for our bodies and minds, our relationships and communities, and our spiritual lives.

We will be using The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book 2013, ‘Abiding’’ by Ben Quash, Professor of Christianity and the Arts, King’s College London. Copies of the book (which you need to take part in the group) are available from Church House Bookshop, tel: +44 20 7799 4064.

The MU is one of the oldest mission societies of the Church. It is active in over 80 countries and has an extensive programme supporting marriage and family life and working alongside vulnerable and marginalized communities around the world. In the Diocese in Europe we have 13 branches and many additional individual members.

Invitation to join the new St Alban’s Electoral RollEvery six years, by canon law, every church in the Church of England must prepare a brand new electoral roll. We last did this in 2007, and the time has now come round again. The chaplaincy council will also do all it can to alert every person currently on the electoral roll that a new roll is being prepared, and that if he/she wishes to have his/her name entered on the new roll he/she must apply for enrolment. It is not automatically carried over from last time.

The preparation of the new roll needs to be completed at least 15 days before our annual church meeting. On 31st March 2013, a copy of the new roll will be published by being exhibited on the notice board in the narthex for two weeks (until 14th April). During this two week period additions can be made. After 14th April, the new roll will continue to be exhibited, but no further changes can be made until after our annual

church meeting (28th April 2013). Only those on the new electoral roll can attend the annual church meeting and vote.

Our electoral roll is the official listing of our church family. We would strongly encourage everyone who considers this church their ‘home church’ to apply for enrolment on the electoral roll.

The form enclosed within this newsletter and available in church can be filled in and either sent by post to the Electoral Roll Officer at St Alban’s Church or brought to church and given to the Electoral Roll Officer.

Wanted: Dead and Alive

Journeying with Jesus from Gethsemane via Golgotha to the Garden Tomb confronts us with life and death issues as matters of fact, fantasy and faith. At services in St Alban’s from Maundy Thursday to Easter Day, Bishop John Saxbee will dig a little deeper into these well-known narratives in order to enrich as well as enjoy our experience of Holy Week 2013. Bishop John Saxbee was born in Bristol and studied Theology at Bristol and Durham Universities. ‘In sweet music is such art’: Purcell’s ‘My beloved spake

February is traditionally the month of love and romance because of St Valentine’s Day. Why a third century Roman martyr should be linked to the outpouring of the human heart is veiled in the mists of time. There was a tradition that 14th February is the day when birds are supposed to mate, and by the late Middle Ages a belief had grown up that St Valentine performed clandestine marriages during the persecution of Christians. His patronage had been transferred from the world of nature to the arena of human courtship. And if there is a musical work appropriate to his day, it is the anthem composed by a teenage Henry Purcell, ‘My beloved spake.’

We are not sure why Purcell composed his anthem, but it would be nice to imagine that as an 18 year old ‘composer to the king’s band’, he was using his considerable gifts

to praise the reality of love that can make the world go round.

The words Purcell set are from the Song of Songs, a short book of eight chapters which is tucked in between Ecclesiastes and Isaiah, and a great contrast to them both. The book is perhaps a celebration of a wedding, like John Donne’s poem in praise of the marriage of Lady Elizabeth and Count Palatine on St Valentine’s Day. Or it is more simply a set of love poems. The early Church Fathers were never quite sure how to react to such obvious sensuality and erotic power in the Old Testament: they preferred to see the Song of Songs as an allegory of Christ and the human soul.

For Henry Purcell music is the food of love and the expression of love in all its energy and ecstasy. The anthem is dramatic, vivid and full of life from the opening symphony to the final alleluias. We hear how the lovers meet in springtime. The winter has gone, the flowers are appearing and the birds are singing. Fruitfulness and growth are all around. Purcell captures that mood as he mixes the current style of anthem writing with the Italian singing tradition. When we hear the voice of the turtle dove, there is a key change that is both sensuous and enthralling. The tenor then sings with a solo violin of the

figs and vines putting forth fruit, and the two weave around each other like the tendrils on the vine.

Did Purcell compose this work as an allegory of the spiritual love between our Lord and his followers? He certainly wrote a vast repertory of anthems and odes and church services. But he also composed a large amount of music for the stage and the theatre. This work ends with a lively three in the bar setting of ‘My beloved is mine, and I am his.’ Perhaps Purcell was saying that this is all that matters on St Valentine’s Day, or any other day.

Archbishop: older people ‘are still participants in society, not passengers’

In his final appearance in the House of Lords as Archbishop of Canterbury late last year, Dr Rowan Williams led a debate about the place and contribution of older people in society.

Dr Williams argued that instead of society seeing older people as ‘a burden’, they should instead

be recognised for the enormous amount of work that they do in their communities. “More than half the over-60 population are involved in some sort of formal and structured voluntary work... a majority of the older population are ready to do what they can, unpaid, to support the fabric of society; they are doing exactly what we expect responsible citizens to do. “

Though older people may well find their physical independence reduced, the Archbishop urged that they should be supported so as to allow them to continue making their valuable contribution to their communities. Dr Williams also stressed the importance of different generations engaging with one another, and said that the Churches and other faith communities have a key role in facilitating this at grass roots level.

“We tolerate a very eccentric view of the good life... as one that can be lived only for a few years between, say, eighteen and forty. The ‘extremes’ of human life, childhood and age, when we are not defined by our productive capacity.... these are hard for our society to come to terms with.”
