Wherever there is a reasonable suspicion of acute SCI, the aim is to maintain full spinal alignment during any moving and handling activity. Careful handling, positioning and turning, on every occasion can reduce the potential for secondary spinal cord trauma during patient transfers and movements. Maintaining full spinal protection during log rolls involves at least four members of staff to maintain spinal alignment throughout the procedure. Additional staff will be required to undertake examination or care associated with the log roll such as washing and checking of skin, placement of pillows, insertion or removal of transfer devices etc.(Harrison & Ash 2011)
