A good new year's resolution: volunteer to help

There has been a lot written about the shrinking of Americans' willingness to volunteer. The work
of our community organizations that have contributed so much here and abroad goes forth year-in,
year-out. The needs don't diminish and the satisfaction can be greatly rewarding.
A perfect example is the inspiring efforts of the Milpitas Rotary Club (Fremont, CA) members who
rose to a challenge when they saw a desperate need at a hospital in a small city in Nicaragua.
It is a saga that perfectly fits the mission of Milpitas Rotary. This group is dedicated to "Service
Above Self" and the Central American project they undertook is emblematic of the worldwide out-
look and scope upon which Rotarians have always put great emphasis.
Four years ago, two vacationing Rotarians, Alan David and Norm LaCroix, learned about some
terrible conditions afflicting a hospital in Chinandega, Nicaragua. The maternity and children's
hospital (Hospital Materno Infantil) was operating under horrible conditions. For lack of funds,
basic supplies and equipment. Even Novocain and filling material for dental procedures was ab-
sent. Researching these needs after hand-carrying some supplies in themselves, the two Rotarians
decided to widen their efforts. Contacting a national foundation, MedShare, which gathers together
surplus and donated items from equipment companies and pharmaceutical firms, they found that a
40-foot container of needed supplies would be provided if shipping costs could be raised.
The local club is not huge (barely 35 members) but the group is energetic and resourceful. They
began stimulating interest and funding throughout the neighboring Rotary club network. They man-
aged to raise the needed $22,000 to cover costs of the container, shipping and other fees. Help
from the American-Nicaraguan Foundation also permitted some purchases of specialized medical
devices obtained in the country's capital such as a life-saving pulse oximeter. Other items needed
by the medical staff were found in the United States by the Rotarians such as laptops, an opthalmo-
scope, a fetal monitor, and even a donated photocopy machine from Ricoh.
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the southern hemisphere, just behind Haiti. The Rotari-
ans were appalled at the conditions in the hospital but also at the surrounding poverty in the town.
They even decided, after witnessing a child scratching to find thrown away food in a giant landfill
garbage dump, to purchase a hundred catered meals for these underfed youngsters. As Norm La-
Croix put it, "When I looked at the kids in that garbage dump, I thought back on my 4-year-old
granddaughter here at home and realized how lucky we are."
Whether the need is locally or somewhere abroad, volunteer efforts make a huge difference in peo-
ple's lives. Make 2014 the year for service above self. Challenge yourself, from now until the end
of the JL year (May 31, 2014) do double the amount of DIAD than you had planned. Submit a
volunteer opportunity to the DIAD committee. Go about and beyond for our community.

Leading Women-Being Your Own Leading Woman
I have been fully prepared not to like Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In. The Facebook COO
is beautiful, privileged, brilliant, successful (career, husband, children) and incredibly
wealthy. The hype around the book has been that women are holding themselves back from
complete success. They need to “lean in” and fully commit to making their careers and their
lives happen. All of the press has been about the presumption that this means that we are not
working hard enough and lack of equity is our own fault. Ugh. I have not brought myself to
reading this book yet, but I am somewhat inspired to do so after reading Ann Marie Slaugh-
ter’s review of the book in Sunday’s New York Times and watching Sandberg on 60 minutes.
Empowering Yourself
In her book, Sandberg encourages women to monitor their own success, challenge their mo-
tives and make good decisions about priorities. At LWP, we refer to this as self leader-
ship. Knowing yourself and your value and pushing for success are all parts of this. These are
absolutely necessary for success.
Companies Continue to Lag Behind
But many women accomplish these things. And, certainly enough women push ahead with
focus and drive that we should see greater numbers of corporate CEOs or Board directors than
16%. My conclusion is that these things are necessary for success but not sufficient for
women to achieve equity.
It is also necessary for corporations to examine themselves, understand the benefits of having
a diverse organization in terms of understanding customers and stakeholders, and provide an
atmosphere for non-traditional candidates to succeed.
This is both necessary and sufficient.

The 2013-2014 proudly presented the Junior League of Fayetteville’s 2014-2015 Slate of Officers at our An-
nual Holiday Social on December 17, 2013. This year’s theme for the presentation was “Winter Wonderland.”
What excitement filled the air when the slate was presented!
The voting members accepted the 2014-2015 Slate by a unanimous vote at our Spring General Membership
Meeting on Monday, January 13, 2014.

UPCOMING TRAINING
The Junior League of Fayetteville, Inc. (JLF), invites community agencies to apply for Community Assistance
Program (CAP) Grants being awarded by the JLF. The CAP Grants enable the JLF to extend its financial sup-
port even further in the community by providing multiple smaller grants to a greater number of charitable
causes in the local area. To be eligible to receive a CAP Grant, organizations must:
Show evidence of nonprofit/501(c)(3) status,
Provide services related to the health and welfare of women and children,
Be located in Cumberland County or the surrounding counties, and
Serve Cumberland County residents.
The JLF focus area is Child Mental Health, but grant recipients will not be limited to this area only. Requests
for capital campaigns, fund raising, salaries, sectarian religious projects, scholarships and long-term funding
will not be considered.

2014 Statewide Conference
The NCAVA Board of Directors are pleased to announce that the 2014 State Conference on Volunteerism is
scheduled for May 14-16, 2014, in downtown Greensboro, NC. This conference is presented annually by
NCAVA to help fulfill its mission to provide education and leadership towards effective volunteer manage-
ment. The Keynote speaker is Rob Jackson, internationally recognized consultant and presenter on volunteer
management from the UK. In addition, NCAVA will have a special celebration at this conference in obser-
vance of its 40th birthday.
The intended outcome of this conference is to assist participants in:
1. learning new ideas and best practices,
2. gaining skills that enhance professional development, and
3. strengthening professional networks.
The conference will be held at the Downtown Marriott in Greensboro

2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
3 eggs
34 cup light or dark corn syrup
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
1 3/4 cups chocolate chunks
Beat the flour, 2 tablespoons butter and the brown sugar in a bowl until crumbly. Press in a greased 9 X 13-
inch baking pan. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 14 minutes or until light brown. Remove from
the oven. Maintain the oven temperature.
Whisk the eggs, corn syrup, granulated sugar, 1/2/ cup butter and the vanilla in a bowl. Stir in the pecans
and chocolate chunks. Pour evenly over the crust. Bake for 30 minutes or until set. Cool in the pan on a
wire rack. Cut into bars. Serve alone or slightly warmed with ice cream.

Junior League of Greensboro Accepting Applications for Climb 365 Leadership Journey
Women to receive coaching, mentoring from experts in an effort to further the next big idea
Greensboro, N.C. – Be brave, be bold, and most of all get ready to “climb.” The Junior League of Greensboro
is calling women from all industries, backgrounds, stages of life, cities and states to dust off their dreams and
apply for 5 spaces available in the new Climb 365 Initiative. The Climb 365 Leadership Journey will be a
yearlong journey for the selected applicants to pursue their dreams. While receiving coaching and guidance to
achieve their goals, participants will share their experience with followers on social media.
The mission of Junior League is to develop the potential of women. This initiative will take the League’s mis-
sion to peak levels. Women chosen for this 365 day journey will be those with ambition, drive, and the vision
for a promising future. Sample project proposal ideas include but are not limited to: writing a book, launching
a new business, changing careers, leaving the workforce or re-entering the workforce, designing a fashion line,
starting a nonprofit. The dream and idea is up to the applicant.
For 12 months (365 days) the winning participants will share their pits and peaks through a blog and social
media platforms. The women will offer the public a glimpse at what it takes to succeed. Each woman will offer
an authentic account of goal setting, planning & implementation, accountability, and overall continuous im-
provement in pursuit of their leadership development goal. The women chosen for Climb 365 will be intro-
duced on April 4th at the 2014 Women’s Leadership Summit. Hosted by the Junior League of Greensboro, the
2014 Summit will be held at Grandover Resort & Conference Center in Greensboro, North Carolina, where
Jenna Bush Hager will be the Keynote Speaker. Then, one year later, these women’s accomplishments will be
celebrated at the 2015 Women’s Leadership Summit.
The Junior League will offer support through coaches, mentors, content experts, and a social media platform.
The purpose is to help women reach their leadership development summit and encourage others to do the
same.
Applications are now accepted. Each applicant is asked to fill out the application on the Women’s Leadership
Summit website (jlgwomensummit.org), submit a resume, a writing sample in the form of a sample blog post,
and a video introduction (5 minutes maximum). Applications should be submitted to
[email protected] using the subject line heading of “Application: Climb 365” by Febru-
ary 17, 2014.
Finalists will be interviewed by an independent panel of key leaders soon thereafter. Corporate sponsorships
are available for the Climb 365 Initiative and the 4th Annual Women’s Leadership Summit, as are opportuni-
ties to become a coach and a mentor to this year’s recipients. To learn more, please contact Caro-
