Natasha Chang (violin) Carrying with me a passion for playing the violin, I joined St Catherine’s hoping to have the platform to express the joy of music to my peers. I achieved my ATCL diploma when I was thirteen, and continued to refine my skills at school under the guidance of Mr Sutton. St. Catherine’s has provided invaluable opportunities that gave me immense fulfilment and have become the fondest memories that I will treasure the most, such as leading Camerata and conducting House Music. This year has also been particularly rewarding, winning the Mayor Martin Chamber Music Trophy in Godalming Festival with my trio. I would like to take this chance to extend my deepest gratitude to all the teachers who constantly supported and believed in me. Allegretto ben moderato, Violin Sonata in A – Franck César Franck was born in Liege in 1822 and his father moved their family to Paris in 1835. Franck’s violin sonata has become one of the most familiar and well-loved of the genre. It was written in 1886 as a wedding present for his violinist friend, Ysayë. Presented to the groom on the morning of his wedding, it was first performed after a hurried rehearsal at the wedding breakfast. It was later given its first public performance at a gallery in Brussels, with Ysayë playing under complete darkness as no candlelight was allowed in the gallery. The work itself encapsulates the story of the happy bride and groom and the first movement evokes the first flickers of attraction, eventually building to intense outbursts of love.

Helena Michels (piano) I began playing the piano aged four in Belgium at the Bruges Conservatoire. The manifestation of my love for Romantic music and the instrument itself was immediate. I have been immensely lucky to have had brilliant teachers to carry me along my musical journey. Mrs Freeman in particular, through her wealth of artistic insight and her unwavering understanding of me as a pianist, drew me into a world which I have come to love unequivocally. For that I am forever grateful.

During my time at St Catherine’s, music has been responsible for creating some of my most cherished memories, as well as allowing me to grow both as a musician and as a person. Despite the assumption of many, I am hoping to pursue a career in medicine. Yet my experience of music, having stretched these past fourteen years, has integrated itself so deeply within me that to lose it is an inconceivable idea. Prelude Op.32 No.1 – Rachmaninov Composed in 1910, Rachmaninov’s thirteen preludes are known, as many of his piano works are, for their virtuoso characteristics and lyrical themes that fit right into the highly Romantic character of Russia at the time. The structure of these works indicate influence by F. Chopin, another major inspiration of mine.

Imogen Walker (flute), Saskia Walker (flute) Imogen: I love playing the flute as I feel it adds another dimension to my life. The highlight of my musical career at St Catherine’s was playing in Concert Band with the Welsh Guards as I got such a buzz from performing. I will really miss playing with my friends in Flautissimo next year! Saskia: Playing music has been a real highlight of my time at St Catherine’s. All the music teachers have been so dedicated and supportive, especially my lovely flute teacher Mrs Burt who helped me achieve my Grade 8 flute. Getting involved in the incredible range of choirs and bands on offer has been such great fun and I have made some friends for life. Playing and singing in the concerts and festivals has been such an amazing experience and I am so grateful for the wonderful opportunities given to me by St Catherine’s Music. Rondo – Doppler We are performing the Rondo from Andante and Rondo Op.25, which is a lively piece of virtuoso writing for flute that explores the range of the instrument. It gives both flutes solo parts within the duet and is not in traditional rondo form as it starts in A minor and ends in C major. It was composed to showcase the talents

Page 4: LEAVERS’ RECITALSfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/StCatherines/... · to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot

of the Doppler brothers during one of their many tours. The Rondo features complex rhythmic layers and has the cheek and drive of a Hungarian gypsy dance.

Emily Wigmore (piano) Having been involved in extra-curricular Music since U3, one of my highlights was playing in Concert Band with the Welsh Guards. I have also enjoyed the annual Jazz and Rock concert, and I look forward to playing in it for the first time next term. Music has been a big part of my St Catherine’s experience and I am grateful to all the music teachers for encouraging me throughout my time here. Arabesque No.1 – Debussy Debussy’s Arabesque No.1 was written as a piece for the solo piano in the late Romantic period. It was one of his earliest pieces and so is much less free-form than some of his later works, yet still has many impressionistic qualities, characteristic of Debussy's compositions. It evokes the feeling of peacefulness and calm, with soft use of the pedal and soothingly repetitive triplets in the right hand.

Nicole Beremovica (voice) I have made enormous progress with my singing since I came to St Catherine’s. With the amazing support of my singing teacher Mrs Brown, I managed to go from a shy singer to achieving my Grade 8. The highlight of my singing was performing a Russian Folksong a cappella in a Monday Assembly: it was probably my scariest performance and a turning point from being too shy to sing to becoming (almost) comfortable on stage. I also loved being part of the choirs and helping out with House Music. In addition to singing, I loved picking up the piano again with Mrs Dickinson. I found my love for Einaudi and I have just started to sing and accompany myself, which is extremely exciting. To the Forest – Tchaikovsky To the Forest (Blagaslavlaju vas lesa) is a song written by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. It emphasises the importance of nature in Russia. It has deep spiritualism, which is

Page 5: LEAVERS’ RECITALSfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/StCatherines/... · to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot

expressed throughout the piece. Tchaikovsky was trying to represent the atmosphere of a traditional Russian soul through his use of powerful words and the dramatic melody line. I really love singing in Russian because it is my mother tongue and I associate it with my home and family.

Isobel Collins (harp) I started playing the harp in L4 and have enjoyed being part of the St Catherine’s Harp Ensemble as well as having individual lessons ever since. I feel so lucky to have had Luisa Cordell as my teacher all this time. She inspires me to work hard, as her passion for music is infectious and compelling. It was thanks to her that I was able to join the National Youth Harp Orchestra of Great Britain. I have been able to play in some very special and memorable venues, my personal favourite being St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, being so close to where many members of my family live. I am so grateful to my teacher for giving me this opportunity, as well as for the many laughs shared along the way. Endless Time – Cacciapaglia Endless Time by Roberto Cacciapaglia is a well-known piece that was introduced to me by Emilie Hart. Although originally written for the piano, I think it works well on the harp too, and I enjoyed learning to play it, as it is simple yet effective. The improvisation section in the middle also gives me an opportunity to personalise the piece, as well as allowing me to be much more creative and experimental with my instrument.

Natasha Lewis (piano) I have taken part in almost everything I can over the last seven years. A particular highlight was playing the clarinet as part of the West Side Story pit orchestra, which I loved so much. As well as playing the clarinet, I sing in choirs and play the piano. I aim to carry on with the clarinet at university and am thinking about taking a Performance Diploma whilst there. I will be taking my Grade 8 piano next term, which will be a nice end to a busy and enjoyable school music career.

Liza – Gershwin Liza by George Gershwin is a jazz-style composition that he wrote with his brother, Ira. The changing rhythms and extensive chords have made learning this piece particularly challenging. George Gershwin wrote it in the 1920’s as part of a production that he was putting on with his brother and lyricist Ira Gershwin, and it was a huge hit in the USA as well as many other of his compositions.

Joyce Choi (timpani) St Catherine’s has provided me with a good opportunity to participate in Jazz Band and Concert Band. As a Music Award Holder, I have particularly enjoyed performing in various concerts. One of my favourite memories from St Catherine’s is playing with the Welsh Guards: it was a great experience to play with the professionals and learn from them. I very much enjoyed having music lessons with Mr Young, with the chance to play many different percussion instruments. I would like to thank my teachers for their support. Happiness – Bomhof Happiness is an unaccompanied timpani solo written for four timpani and composed by Gert Bomhof. It has a number of rhythmic structures and techniques such as cross sticking and double stopping (playing more than one of the timpani at the same time). Bomhof was born in 1955 in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands, and was introduced to percussion at a young age. He is still active as a composer and percussion teacher.

Christie Brooks (piano) I have been playing the piano since U3. Since hearing my mum play as a little girl I have always wanted to play the piano and find great enjoyment in doing so. With Miss Andre, I have been able to develop my love of the piano outside the constraints of the examination system. Although I have not performed in many concerts, I have loved playing at House Communion and the piano has been a significant part of my amazing time at St Catherine’s.

Glasgow Love Theme – Armstrong Glasgow Love Theme is part of the sound track for the nationally-acclaimed film Love Actually. The piece appears in many parts of the film but its shining moment is when Juliet asks to see the wedding video made by her husband’s best friend Mark. The piece is played while she watches the video and sees the unrequited love that Mark has for her. The mix of pain and romance encapsulates the deep sadness felt by Mark yet emphasises the beauty and admiration he feels for Juliet.

Chloe Siu (marimba), Julia Kan (xylophone), Joyce Choi (timpani), Romy Li (drums) Chloe: I have enjoyed playing percussion instruments since I joined St Catherine’s in 2013, especially the marimba. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to perform in various concerts and for various occasions. Some of my favourite musical moments were from House Music, which I had the chance to lead and conduct this year and the Gala Concert, where every music group in the School has a chance to feature in a celebratory night. I thoroughly enjoyed playing with the Concert Band and I can still remember the day when we had a workshop playing alongside The Welsh Guards: it was truly unforgettable. I hope to continue to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot of techniques and introducing me to numerous percussion instruments, and all the music teachers for their support throughout my musical career. Julia: I picked up percussion when I joined St Catherine’s in L6, and I have enjoyed playing it ever since. In particular, I relish the opportunities to play tuned percussion, such as playing in Concert Band at the Gala Concert and Speech Day. I really liked the varied genres of pieces played by the band. I have also enjoyed playing the piano accompaniment for House Music Competition and Informal Concerts. I have gained many practical skills, especially sight-reading, which will be immensely useful for the rest of my musical career. I hope to continue participate in music performances at university, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Young for always encouraging me and giving me guidance to improve my percussion skills.

Page 8: LEAVERS’ RECITALSfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/StCatherines/... · to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot

Romy: I have enjoyed playing percussion since 2013. Being a part of Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble and the Fife and Drum Band has taught me the rewarding life-long skill of teamwork, as well as having the amazing opportunity to perform with the Welsh Guards. I loved getting to know people from different year groups especially through the pit orchestras for school productions. I really hope to continue my music career at university. I would like to thank Mr Young and all of my teachers and conductors for always encouraging me and supporting me through all my musical endeavours. The Two Imps – Alford The Two Imps is a percussion piece published in 1923, originally as a xylophone duet by Kenneth J. Alford, who is Mrs Bryn-Thomas’ grandfather. The piece displays the dexterity for tuned percussion instruments and the liveliness of the “two imps”. Alford, a Bandmaster in the British Army, composed extraordinary marches which were considered to be great examples of the art. One of his most famous pieces, Colonel Bogey, was once performed by Concert Band, which inspired us to play this splendid piece.

Natasha Nixon (piano) I have played the piano for eleven years and have really enjoyed playing for fun. I particularly love Einaudi’s compositions because they are very relaxing. Melodia Africana III – Einaudi Melodia Africana III is a beautiful piece that is soothing to listen to, and sets the scene of an African sunset with its flowing melodies and repetitive arpeggios.

Selina Celebidachi (voice) I have enjoyed singing at St Catherine’s since I joined in 2011. Singing has been a big part of my school career and I have thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with Mrs Crocker. I particularly enjoyed performing the role of the Narrator in Joseph for the L6 Musical. I would like to thank Mrs Crocker for always having confidence in me, and for encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone.

Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered – Rodgers Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered is a show tune and popular song from the 1940 Rodgers and Hart musical Pal Joey, sung by Vivienne Segal playing Vera Simpson. Vera is a wealthy but bored society matron who uses her husband’s money to spice up her life. She sings the song not too long after she has met the title character. The song reflects her ambivalence. Instead of having the good time she was after, Vera discovers she is “bewitched, bothered and bewildered”.

Sarah Thrasher (alto saxophone) I have not been very involved in music at St Catherine’s. The last time I performed here, I was four feet tall and had long blonde hair, so it has been a while. Coming from a school that does not prize music in the same way as St Catherine’s meant that I was in awe upon my arrival last year and I chose to listen rather than participate. Being surrounded by so many talented musicians did not help my fear of being on stage by myself, so in a bid to overcome this fear before heading off to university, I am going to step up and be myself on stage for once. Thank you to everyone who has helped my confidence, you have all been so helpful. Go the Distance – Menken Go the Distance from Disney’s Hercules has been one of my favourite songs for a long time. This song is sung at a pivotal moment in Hercules’ life when he is trying to find where he belongs in the world. Being born a god, but having his immortality taken away from him (as opposed to the original myth where he is born only part god), he struggled to fit in to the mortal world as he has not learned to control his godly strength. Hercules is about to leave home to find out who he truly is and is finding the courage to do whatever it takes to find a place he belongs.

Sasha Narraway (voice) I have really loved singing during my time at St Catherine’s. I still remember singing 76 trombones in U3 Choir and accompanying it with numerous actions to distinguish between the different instruments (as well as to help us remember

Page 10: LEAVERS’ RECITALSfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/StCatherines/... · to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot

the lyrics!) Singing has been a big part of my school career and I have loved my lessons with both Mrs Shelfer and Mrs Brown. Every week I look forward to my lessons as I learn songs from musical theatre shows you have heard of, as well as many of those you have not! Mrs Brown never fails to disappoint me with her extensive musical theatre knowledge. This year, I achieved my Grade 8 Musical Theatre Exam with a Distinction and I would like to thank Mrs Brown for supporting me throughout all my musical endeavours and always accompanying me on the day. My favourite musical memories from St Catherine's will always be the Vocal Sectional Concerts, as part of Vocal Fest/Week, as well as the Whole School Musicals. Every other year, I have loved being able to sing with a cast of almost 60 girls, all doing different harmonies whilst dancing to Good Vibrations or clicking to Here come the Jets from West Side Story. Being able to get to know so many girls, from all years, during the school musicals is something I will treasure from my time at St Catherine’s. I now look forward to continuing my love of singing and acting at university by joining both acting and musical theatre societies! As If We Never Said Goodbye – Lloyd Webber As If We Never Said Goodbye is a song from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical, Sunset Boulevard. Sunset Boulevard is a compelling story of romance and obsession, based on Billy Wilder’s legendary film, with Don Black and Christopher Hampton's wonderful book and lyrics. Both haunting and desperately sad, Sunset Boulevard revolves around the former star of the silent screen era, Norma Desmond. Aging and largely forgotten for years, she lives in her dilapidated mansion in Hollywood. Lost in the memories of her glamorous past, Norma sings this song to reflect on her time on the silver screen and her ever-lasting relationship with the world of cinema, to which she wants to return.

Daisy Holder (voice) I have had singing lessons since I was seven, and have had them at St Catherine’s until this term. Singing has always been a big part of my life that I do for pleasure rather than to complete grades. One of my favourite events is the Jazz and Rock Concert, and I am always amazed by the talent of my fellow performers as well having a fabulous time singing myself. Performing makes me happy and I have really appreciated all the opportunities I have had to do it here. I really hope I have the same opportunities going forward in life and, if not, I will try to make them! Feeling Good – Newley and Bricusse This piece was originally written for the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd. I grew to love Nina Simone's version of the song and have always found it meaningful and emotional in its own right. Her voice with the lyrics expresses appreciation as well as self-assurance and progression despite the discrimination Simone would have had to deal with. The song gives me an opportunity to sing in the way I enjoy most and I feel it is entirely appropriate for celebrating at the Leavers’ Recital.

Emilie Hart (voice and guitar) I have loved music since I came to St Catherine’s in 2013. Music has been a big part of my time here, and I have loved my lessons with Mrs Brown and Mr Henshall. My favourite memories from music will always be U5 Music composition lessons; the House Music Competition, which has become my life this year; the yearly Cantores trip to Winchester Cathedral; and the ever-energetic U3 Choir which I and the other Music Prefects get to lead weekly. Music has helped me meet so many other people in different year groups and is always a way in which I can relax when work gets a bit much, so I want to thank the Music Department for everything they do to make music at St Catherine’s so special.

Page 12: LEAVERS’ RECITALSfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/StCatherines/... · to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot

Dancing in the Moonlight – Kelly Dancing in the Moonlight is a song by the French-American rock group King Harvest that was released as a single in 1972 and reached number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also charted in the UK in March 2000, after being covered in 1999 by Toploader. I hope you like my slightly more acoustic cover of this song.

Carmen Walshe (voice), Chloe Baker (drums), Funmi Looi-Somoye (bass guitar) Carmen: I used to sing classical music for a few years and sang jazz on the side during this period of time. After Mr Young introduced me to the idea of singing jazz and contemporary music in the school, I decided to invest all my energy into this. I would like to thank Mrs Bowen-Perkins for being a great singing teacher during my school years and would particularly like to thank Mr Young for everything he has done, not just for me but for everyone in the school. I will continue singing jazz and contemporary music at university. Chloe: After being encouraged to play the drums by my dad for many years I decided to start when I was in L5. I soon discovered that I should have started much earlier as it very quickly became my favourite hobby. I have enjoyed playing various styles of music, from the various House Music songs, to the current classic & modern R&B/jazz style of Amy Winehouse. I would never have gained the confidence I have now if I had not had Mr Young as my teacher, and I am grateful for everything he has taught me. I know the skills I have learnt will be carried with me through the rest of my life and the love I have for music now will always be something I hold close. Funmi: I started learning double bass at age eight, owing to my admiration of the instrument. Once starting, I realised that I thoroughly enjoyed playing it, and loved the deeper tones it gave to ensembles and orchestras. I then went on to self-learn the bass guitar. This has given me great flexibility to perform in Concert Band and other groups.

Page 13: LEAVERS’ RECITALSfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/StCatherines/... · to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot

Rehab – Winehouse Rehab was written and recorded by Amy Winehouse and comes from her second and final studio album Back to Black. The lyrics are autobiographical and address Amy’s refusal to enter a rehabilitation centre. It is one of her signature songs and has continued to be very popular and is enjoyed by us all.

Connie Burdett (voice), Emilie Hart (piano) Connie: I have loved singing throughout my time at St Catherine’s since I joined in 2011. Singing has been a huge part of my school career, as I have had lessons since L4 with Mrs Bowen-Perkins and could not be more grateful to her for the support for my singing that she has provided. I have also been part of most of the school choirs since U3, and have enjoyed performing pieces from a variety of genres. My favourite musical memories of my time at St. Catherine’s have been leading my House in one of our songs for the House Singing competition, and performing in the Jazz and Rock Concert for several years with the Jazz Band. Rooting for You – Reid, Major and Rothman Rooting for You is a song by English alternative trio London Grammar. The song was released by Ministry of Sound and Sony Music in the United Kingdom on 1 January 2017 as the lead single from their second studio album Truth is a Beautiful Thing (2017). This song deals with the hesitation of love, the loneliness one can feel in the company of their unobtainable beloved, and almost sounds like a prayer to the heavens, questioning and asking for answers, seeking a path that leads to her darling who she will never abandon.

Charlie Golder (voice), Jade Golder (voice) Charlie: Throughout my time at St Catherine’s I have had piano and singing lessons, reaching Grade 4 in piano and Grade 6 in singing. I started piano lessons when I was in Year 4 doing grades until Grade 4 and have been playing for fun ever since. I also played the violin from Year 3 until Year 6. I have also always had a passion for singing from the age of four when I took part in Stagecoach until

Page 14: LEAVERS’ RECITALSfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/StCatherines/... · to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot

joining St Catherine’s. I have also been a part of Senior Choir and Middle Chamber Choir and have been in Merriman House select voices twice. Jade: I have always thoroughly enjoyed playing music in my free time including piano and singing. I have been taking piano lessons for quite a long time, and I have reached Grade 5 standard. I have always enjoyed singing, even before coming to St Catherine’s in U3. I was a part of Stagecoach from the age of four until joining St Catherine’s, as well as being a part of choirs in my prep school. All of this helped fuel my passion for singing. Although I do not take singing lessons, I have always enjoyed being a part of school choirs including being a part of select voices for House Music. I was in Middle Chamber Choir, Fourth Form Choir and Senior Choir, and have also loved taking part in the Carol Service every year. I hope to continue my music into university next year where I can continue to enjoy it. Sad Song – Clark, Bard and Immerman Sad Song is a song written and performed by We The Kings, featuring Elena Coats. This is about two people who were very close; the lyrics explain how something happened to separate them and how hard it has been. We have looked at this as the close bond of siblings who have grown up together.

Maddy Van Every (voice and piano), Nadia Raza (voice and ukulele), Phoebe Jowett ('cello) Maddy: I have enjoyed singing throughout my time at St Catherine's since U3 through to L5. I loved my lessons with Mrs Brown, but had never performed in front of an audience before playing one of the narrators in our Sixth Form Musical, Joseph. I had so much fun that I feel inspired to try singing again! I hope to find a choir at university in a few years’ time, because I have found it so enjoyable to get back into music.

Page 15: LEAVERS’ RECITALSfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/StCatherines/... · to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot

Nadia: I enjoy singing in general but I am most happy when I am singing with my friends. Phoebe, Maddy, and I have grown especially close in the past few years, and we feel that this unusual and eclectic combination of instruments (cello with ukulele) really represents us together. I love performing at St Catherine's events whenever I can, be it plays, musicals or concerts, and I am pleased that, in the Leavers’ Recital, I am once again performing alongside my friends and our close-knit year. Phoebe: I have enjoyed playing the cello since primary school and, although I never had lessons in School, I was always welcomed into any musical groups. I was part of the Cello Orchestra for several years which was a really unique but fun experience. My musical highlight from St Catherine’s was definitely playing at the Jazz and Rock Concert as cellos do not usually fit in this category! I have achieved some of the higher grades but I have always preferred playing music for fun as I do not perform well under stressful conditions! Rewrite the Stars – Pasek and Paul This song is taken from The Greatest Showman and is about the struggles of two people who are in love but cannot be together due to class boundaries.

Anisha Page (piano), Emily Taylor (voice), Lexi Reina ('cello), Natasha Chang (violin), Catherine Burne (violin), Joyce Choi (drums) Anisha: I have really enjoyed playing the piano during my time at St Catherine’s. I have had a lot of opportunities to experiment with the piano and learn different things, such as playing by ear, accompanying singers and playing duets. I would like to thank the teachers who have helped me so much, and I am sure that I will continue to play the piano in the future. Emily: I began playing the harp in the summer term of U3; within two terms I joined the Harp Ensemble, becoming part of an enthusiastic and thoroughly

Page 16: LEAVERS’ RECITALSfluencycontent-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/StCatherines/... · to play percussion in university. I would like to thank Mr Young for teaching me a lot

supportive group. Together we have performed at a consistently high standard in concerts and festivals both in school and to wider audiences. This experience enabled me to join the National Youth Harp Orchestra of Great Britain where I have played with the best young harpists in the country. I have since had the chance to play in fantastic venues all over the world, performing wonderful music written especially for us by world-renowned composers. As a senior harpist, I really enjoy being able to mentor the younger girls, especially seeing them fall in love with the harp in the same way I did when I was 12. I would like to thank Mrs Cordell for continually inspiring me, encouraging me to expand my repertoire, and for opening the doors to so many fantastic experiences which I will always remember. Lexi: I have played the cello and piano throughout my time at St Catherine’s and have been a member of various musical groups. I have also sung in choirs, and I particularly enjoyed the Prep School Choir where we always made use of actions! Slipping Through my Fingers – Ulvaeus and Andersson Björn Ulvaeus wrote the lyrics after watching his daughter Linda go off to school, realising she was beginning to “slip through his fingers” and grow up. It is one of his favourites; Ulvaeus said of the song, “Every parent knows that feeling, even if you were with them every waking hour you'd still feel that you were missing something.” The lead vocal was originally performed by Linda’s mother.

Charlie Golder (piano), Jade Golder (voice), Natasha Chang (violin), Catherine Burne (violin), Chloe Baker (drums) Jar of Hearts – Perri, Lawrence and Yeretsian Jar of Hearts was written by Christina Perri and it was released in 2010. This song was inspired by a former love interest who wanted to rekindle a broken relationship.

Sasha Narraway (voice), Nadia Raza (voice) For Good – Schwartz For Good comes towards the end of the musical Wicked, where Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch) are parting ways after their friendship has grown so strong. We have always wanted to play these characters together as we both love the musical and see similarities of each of the characters in ourselves. Performing this song in the Leavers’ Recital has been a plan for us for a while, as we are so sad to be leaving each other, but know that our friendship will stay with us forever as we go our separate ways.

Jacky Yu (voice), Emilie Hart (guitar) Jacky: Since joining St Catherine’s in 2011, I had enjoyed singing in choirs but was always too shy to audition. Moving up the school, I gained enough confidence to audition for Senior Chamber Choir in L5 and was successful. This was the first choir that I had auditioned for which opened new opportunities such as singing at the Godalming Music Festival and at the Association Concert. My favourite musical memories from St Catherine’s would be winning the House Music Competition in U3, which was a great highlight especially for my first year at St Catherine’s. I have loved singing and getting to know people through Cantores. I have also enjoyed improving my sight-reading which had always been a concern to me. I would like to thank my teachers for giving me great opportunities and for boosting my confidence through the years. Fly me to the Moon – Howard Fly me to the Moon is a song written by Bart Howard in 1954. It was first known as In Other Words, but was soon changed to Fly me to the Moon owing to its catchy phrase. Kaye Ballard had made the first commercial recording, which then had influenced many other singers to release different versions, including Frank Sinatra ten years’ later.

Helena Foord (voice) Music has been a massive part of my life at St Catherine’s and I will forever be indebted to all the teachers who have helped me through the past seven years. Particular highlights have been achieving my Grade 8 singing, finally passing my grade 5 piano and performing the euphonium solo in Face Down in the Gala Concert accompanied by Concert Band. Music lessons have always been a highlight of my week and I cannot thank Mrs Crocker, Miss Hayley and Mr Sykes enough for always pushing me to be the best I can be; I would not have achieved nearly as much without them. I also owe huge thanks to St Catherine’s for giving me the Lower Brass Music Award and introducing me to the euphonium as learning this is something I would never have done without their support. I hope that in the future I get to be part of musical groups like the ones I have been in at St Catherine’s because they have given me so many incredible memories that I will never forget. Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal – Quilter Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal is from the epic The Princess by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In this song, the Princess Ida is finally revealing her love to the Prince who is recovering from his battle wounds. It is a beautiful song which I have thoroughly enjoyed singing in my lessons with Mrs Crocker.

Catherine Burne (piano), Helena Michels (piano) Catherine: I came to the Prep School aged nine playing the piano and the violin, and over the years I have collected a few more instruments along the way – clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano saxophone and the organ. This makes practising a bit time consuming to say the least, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Some particular highlights have been the music tour to Slovenia, being a Music Prefect, performing in the pit orchestras for Joseph, Wind in the Willows and West Side Story, and the annual Jennifer Bate Organ Academy that I have had the privilege to attend twice (my third will be in two weeks’ time and I can hardly wait!). Playing such a wide variety of instruments has meant that I have had the opportunity to play in many of the groups and ensembles that we are so lucky to

have here at St Catherine’s. Through these groups I have made some of my closest friends who have helped to make my school career so memorable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my music teachers for forever encouraging me along my musical journey so far and I hope to be able to continue this through university and beyond. Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 – F.Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 is the second in a set of nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies by F.Liszt, and probably the most famous. This particular arrangement depicts the sometimes awkward and physically challenging nature of having to share the keys with another player.

U6 Choir Emilie Hart (conductor), Helena Michels (piano) Wherever I Go – Watts and Dodd Wherever I Go is a song from Hannah Montana about leaving behind old friends and starting a new chapter. But, although we leave them behind, they will be with us, wherever we go.

As a year group, we have had such a fantastic time at School. We want to enable other girls, who would not otherwise be able to attend St Catherine’s, to have the same opportunities. Tonight, we are raising money for the Leavers’ Fund, and everything will go towards Sixth Form Bursaries. Thank you, and we hope that you have enjoyed this evening’s performances.

Accompanists Mrs Laura Brown, Mrs Vanessa Crocker, Miss Morta Grigaliūnaitė,
