Plenary Speaker Abstracts and Bios Gordon Lewis Strategies for Teaching with Technology A Roadmap for Teachers and Administrators Technology is a powerful tool which is changing the face of education and dominating the discourse about teaching and learning. However, you can’t just “plug-in” technology and expect it work for you and your students. There needs to be a vision for technology, and behind this vision, a plan. In this talk we will explore how to develop a roadmap for technology implementation at the institutional level, which considers the needs of all stakeholders: students, teachers, administrators, and parents. We will particularly look at two case studies: a 1-1 implementation in a US school district and a flipped classroom project at a Peruvian university. Bio Gordon Lewis is Vice President, Languages for Laureate Higher Education, based in Princeton, NJ, USA. He earned a B.S. in Languages and Linguistics from Georgetown University, Washington D.C. and an M.S. from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, Monterey , California . From 1991-1999 he ran a language school for children in Berlin, Germany. From 2001 to 2004 he was Director of Instructor Training and Development for Berlitz Kids in Princeton , New Jersey . From 2004-2008 he was Academic Director of Kaplan English Programs, based in New York City. Gordon has served on the committee of the IATEFL Young Learners Special Interest Group and served as an editorial board member of ELT Journal. He is co-author of Games for Children and Grammar for Young Learners and author of The Internet and Young Learners, Teenagers, and Making the Most of Technology, all published by Oxford University Press. Nellie Deutsch Technology with Teens: Distraction or Engagement? The use of technology in the EFL classroom may cause distractions, but may also provide opportunities for learning. Students’ attention may be impaired by the use electronic devices. Allowing students to teach with their smart phones may actually improve learning and engagement in class. The presenter will share simple techniques that combine technology and mindfulness to help improve student focus in the classroom. Bio Dr. Nellie Deutsch is founder of Integrating Technology and Moodle (M4T) social learning networks. She organizes MOOCs, Moodle training, online conferences, webinars and teaching with technology as a way to learn. She is a blended and e-learning expert and is the author of Instructor Experiences with Implementing Technology in Blended Learning Courses.

Jo Hayes Flipping tech! 5 Mistakes Made and Lessons Learned in ELT media production for children In this session we will take a behind-the-scenes look at ELT media production for children. I’ll be sharing my views on how to create media content which breaks the ELT mould, how to focus on the needs of ELT learners without stifling innovation and creativity and why you should never swear on set! Come and join me for these and other anecdotes from the cutting room floor! Bio Jo Hayes has worked in ELT for over 20 years as a teacher, teacher trainer, author, media content creator and editor. She worked for 12 years for the British Council and as Editorial Manager of the LearnEnglish Kids website she created and commissioned all audio and visual website content. As Head of AV Production at BBC Worldwide she oversaw all media creation for BBC English in Asia. Jamie Keddie YouTube youth culture In the last few years, online video has been embraced and reinvented by young people. In this talk, I would like to examine a number of recent case studies which serve to introduce YouTube youth cultures to teachers. Be warned - you may be shocked! I will also talk about why understanding this can be useful to those of us who work with young people. Bio Jamie Keddie is a teacher trainer, writer and storyteller. He is the founder of Lessonstream.org. His areas of interest include the use of visual materials, storytelling and video technologies in the classroom.
