They have joined the Admissions Office as temporary counselors and will be assisting with recruitment travel throughout New York State. Valerie has experience working in the student services area while enrolled in college, and Grace is an Alfred State graduate, having earned a bachelor’s degree in human services management in May 2017.

Money Magazine’s report on the Best Colleges for Your Money 2017 awarded Alfred State stellar ratings, with a dozen of the college’s degree programs listed as among the top 10 in the nation.

After evaluating more than 2,400 colleges and universities around the country, Money Magazine ranked Alfred State number 200 overall. That places the college in the top 10 percent of all schools and a top performer in many categories.

When calculating the value of individual majors from different schools, these Alfred State programs were highly ranked, including one first-place award:

Us rank description of MajorNo. 1..................Web/Multimedia Management and WebmasterNo. 2..................Computer and Information System SecurityNo. 2..................Computer Programming, Specific ApplicationsNo. 2..................System, Networking and LAN/WAN ManagementNo. 3..................Architectural TechnologyNo. 3..................Computer Engineering TechnologyNo. 3..................Surveying TechnologyNo. 5..................Animation, Interactive TechnologyNo. 7..................Mechanical Engineering TechnologyNo. 8..................Financial PlanningNo. 8..................Forensic Science and TechnologyNo. 9..................Electrical, Electronic Engineering Technology

When announcing the list, Money Magazine noted, “Like any generalized list, Money’s college rankings serve only as a starting point. We’ve created a free Web tool that allows you to build your own rankings.” In this way, students and parents can add the aspects of a college that are most important to them.

By narrowing search results to include only public institutions and schools with fewer than 5,000 students, Alfred State quickly rockets up the list to the number seven position for best colleges in the US.

To compile the list, Money Magazine used data from the US Department of Education, Peterson’s, Payscale.com, and College Measures. The evaluation covered 27 factors in three categories: quality of education, cost, and alumni success. Out of the 2,400 schools evaluated, 711 met the magazine’s standards to be named one of the Best Colleges for Your Money.

Money Magazine’s database tool to build your own rankings is available at: www.time.com/money/best-colleges/.

In July 2017, the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE) awarded candidacy status to the following programs within the Business Department: business administration (AS and BBA degrees), marketing, accounting, sport management (AS and BBA degrees), financial planning, and technology management.

THE APPALACHIAN REGIONAL COMMISSION (ARC) recently awarded $1.5 million to Alfred State for the Biorefinery Development and Commercialization Center (BDCC). The prototype facility will help private and public partners leverage wood resources to create sustainable businesses using advanced manufacturing processes. The new grant increases the total funding raised to date for the research facility to $4.5 million.

The BDCC is a prototype that will develop and commercialize the Hot Water Extraction (HWE) process that produces valuable chemical assets from wood, energy crops, and agricultural residuals. Through this technology, approximately 25 percent of the biomass is converted into value-added products such as advanced fuels and bio-based chemicals for plastics. The remaining 75 percent produces modified wood chips that have improved qualities for paper products, fuel pellets, and particleboard used in furnishings and construction.

Alfred State’s 18,000-square-foot biorefinery center is intended to spur additional investment,

including business start-ups and full-scale biorefineries. Alfred State, the State University of New York (SUNY), universities from other ARC states, and private-sector bioenergy and biochemical companies will benefit from the research facility.

Through the BDCC, Alfred State will also provide training and technical services to both start-up companies and companies impacted by economic changes as they seek to enter new markets, diversify their manufacturing base, and adapt their workforce. The research facility is a collaboration between Alfred State and Syracuse-based Applied Biorefinery Sciences.

The award to Alfred State was made through ARC’s POWER (Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization) Initiative. This congressionally funded multi-agency strategy brings federal resources directly to help communities and regions affected by job losses in coal mining, coal power plant operations, and coal-related supply chain industries due to the changing economics of America’s energy production.

More than two dozen gifted high school students from across New York converged

at Alfred State in July for the NYSSSA School of Media Arts, an intensive four-week program that offers courses in filmmaking, video and sound art, photography, animation, and more.

This marked the first time that Alfred State has hosted the program, which is one of many within the New York State Summer School for the Arts (NYSSSA). This institute is run by the New York State Education Department for students of the arts in various disciplines, from music and the performing arts to visual arts, and programs for each discipline are hosted at college campuses across New York State.

Artistic Director Ghen Zando-Dennis said, “NYSSSA School of Media Arts is committed to an experimental and exploratory pedagogical approach to art-making. Students combine the technical skills with the critical skills to make work, and many go on to attend notable art/film schools, sometimes with scholarships awarded from their

portfolios of work made in our classes. Alfred State is a good fit for us, and we are excited to be working with our hosts in the Department of Digital Media and Animation.”

Each day, the School of Media Arts included a rather full schedule, with daily classes running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., then lectures or visiting artist presentations taking place in the evenings.

Zando-Dennis noted that the program is adjudicated, meaning high school students apply with a written artist statement and samples of their work. Students, she said, do not need to have worked directly with the mediums they apply to study in the program.

To help with the cost of the program, NYSSSA offers sliding-fee scholarships to students of low-income families. Students must be in high school and a New York State resident to be eligible to attend.

For more information on the NYSSSA School of Media Arts, visit www.oce.nysed.gov/nysssa/media-arts.

Growing up, Carina Scalise listened to her father’s stories about construction management projects he was involved with, and became inspired to pursue a career in the same field.

Carina decided to enroll in construction management at Alfred State because of the amount of hands-on experience she would receive, as well as the small-town feel of the campus. Since becoming a Pioneer, Carina has enjoyed the sense of community that the college has, and the individualized attention she has received.

“I’ve never felt like just a number in my classes. Also, I have gotten to know my peers and professors very well over the past few years.”

With so many clubs and organizations to choose from on campus, Carina found two that particularly stood out to her: the Associate General Contractors of America Club and Women Engineers are Pioneers. Also outside of the classroom, Carina was able to secure internships through Alfred State at LeChase Construction and Balfour Beatty.

As a result of her classes and extracurricular activities, Carina feels she has become a more confident, well-rounded person.

“I’ve met a lot of great people at Alfred State and have gained a lot of experience, as well. As a result, I have a lot of great opportunities ahead of me.”

Finishing in the top 10 in a national competition category is nothing new for Alfred State’s Andrea Koston.

Last year, the 2017 culinary arts: baking, production and management graduate from Rochester earned a fifth-place spot in the commercial baking category in the 52nd annual National SkillsUSA Championship. This year, Koston fared even better against the competition, taking home a silver medal in commercial baking in the 53rd annual event, which took place in Louisville, KY.

More than 6,000 students compete in 100 occupational and leadership skill areas at the SkillsUSA championships, according to the SkillsUSA website. The site further adds that these competitions establish industry standards for entry-level workers in many fields.

Having recently earned her two-year degree, Koston is continuing her education at Alfred State in the college’s four-year technology management program. Also representing Alfred State at the national championship were Jacob Knapp, autobody repair, Dansville; Nicholas Most, building trades: building construction, Endicott; Brenton Yager, masonry, Falconer; Mike Burdick, automotive service technician, Webster; and Cole Smith, electrical construction and maintenance electrician, Collins.

Vet tech ranked third best in nationA new review of the best veterinary technology programs ranks Alfred State as the third best in the United States. The analysis is based on the likelihood of success for students who want to put their love of animals to work.

TheBestColleges.org explained that they “looked at the most important factors for prospective students, mainly common predictors of future success” to determine the best colleges for becoming a veterinary technician. These factors included admissions rate, default rate, retention rate, and graduation rate. Alfred State’s veterinary technology program is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for vet techs is expanding, as the number of vet techs is projected to grow 19 percent between 2014 and 2024.
