"Learn to succeed" - "Dysgu i lwyddo"

On the 6th February, Dee Radio came to school to record our podcast as we were elected “School of the Week”.

We met a lovely lady called Ruth who recorded us in the Book House. We chose to talk about the clubs that we run ourselves in the school library as they are one of our exciting things to do out of school hours.

In the library we have a variety of different clubs from Chess Club to Japanese Club and we are starting a new Art Club after half term.

Cross - Country

Well done to the athletes who were selected to represent Flintshire in the cross-country championships in January. A bitterly cold day with a touch of rain but this didn’t stop our pupils!! A number of Hawarden High pupils have now been selected to represent the North East Wales cross-country team. A special mention to Ellie who won the middle girl’s competition!

Thanks to the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines who recently came to school to deliver a presentation to our Year 10 and 11 Public Service students. The Students received an insight into the work of the Navy and Year 11 students were able to experience a practice Psychometric Test.

The Creative Engagement team from Theatr Clwyd were in school last week delivering workshops to Year 9 students. The interactive workshops included a live performance by professional actors which gave the students the opportunity to explore the issues arising from consent. The students learned what makes a healthy relationship, the effects of alcohol and drugs on decision making, how the law works in relation to consent and consequences.

Consent workshop

A huge well done to HHS students who competed in the Royal Society Of Chemistry’s ‘Top of the Bench’ competition!

We were introduced to the artist Kirsti Brown, who specializes in hand built ceramics, inspired by the coastal regions of Wales and Scotland. Kirsti explained and demonstrated to us her methods of construction and decoration. We were able to see how her bottles are slab built, with small necks and shoulders to give the work a figurative feeling. Kirsti explained how the bowls and vessels are pinched and coiled offering the impression of washed stones and shells. Finally, we were able to watch how the ceramic pieces were decorated with slips, marks and glazes to create a sense of the sea and shoreline. We had a really enjoyable visit and it was nice to be introduced to a different type of medium and experience the ceramic process from start to finish. We also looked through some of Kirsti’s sketchbooks in her studio and could see that she is constantly recording and drawing whenever she is out in the countryside, town or at the beach. It was very interesting to be given an insight into the career of a professional artist.

Maths Murder Mysteries, UNO, Connect 4, Speed Stacking, chess and bake sales – it was all happening in the Book House on Friday 7th February as we celebrated twenty years of NSPCC Number Day.

Our Star Baker from year 7 sold all her amazing cake pops within mere minutes...

Number detectives from Key Stage 3 banded together to solve the mathematical clues, enabling the police to throw the book at the killer…..

Thank you to all our fantastic students, Numeracy Ambassadors and student librarians who volunteered their help on the day by running activities, raising funds for the NSPCC and celebrating fun with maths!

Games of strategy and some friendly competition...
