Learn to KnitLesson 1: Make a Slip Knot1. At the length of yarn that you have pulled for your tail make a loop. You should see an ‘X’.

2. Grab hold of the strand of yarn that is on the top of the ‘X’ and bring this strand behind and through the loop that has been created

Page 2: Learn to Knit

3. Pull this new loop through the old loop and pull down to create your slip knot!

Once you have your slip knot you are ready to cast on. Remember that the slip knot counts as your first cast on stitch.

Learn to KnitLesson 2: Learn to Cast On1. Place your slip knot on a needle. Hold the needle in your right hand pointing to the left. Hold the slip knot in place with your right index finger so it does not fly off the needle.

2. Place your left thumb and index finger in between the two strands of yarn dangling from the needle. (Your thumb should be closer to you and the index finger away from you.) Hold the dangling yarn taut with your ring and pinky fingers.

3. Flip your left thumb up while guiding the needle down and to the left. A loop should form around your thumb.

4. Guide the needle up through the loop on your thumb

5. Guide the needle over the yarn that is around your index finger and catch it with the needle.

6. Guide the yarn hooked by the needle down through the loop around your thumb.

7. Slip your thumb out of its loop and place this thumb inside the strand of yarn that is closer to you. Pull down gently and you have a cast on stitch!

Learn to KnitLesson 3: Learn to Knit1. Cast on the number of stitches required by your chosen pattern or 20 stitches if you are just practicing. Hold the needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand and the empty needle in your right hand. Point the needles toward each other.

2. While holding the yarn in the back of the left needle in between your right thumb and index finger, insert the right needle from front to back through the stitch on the left needle. You will see that the needles form an "X" the right needle beneath the left needle

3. Keep the needles crossed by holding both needles with the thumb, index and middle fingers of your left hand. Do this by holding the right needle with the thumb nail on top facing you, and the nails of the index and middle fingers underneath that right needle and facing away from you. With your right hand, pick up yarn and wrap the yarn counterclockwise under and around the bottom needle; do not wrap it around the left needle.

4. Hold the yarn in place

around the right needle inbetween your right thumb and index finger and guide the right needle towards you through the center of the stitch on the left needle. The right needle should now be on top of the left needle.

5. Pull remaining yarn off the left needle by pulling the right needle up and to the right so that the newly formed stitch slides off the left needle to the right. You will have a newly created stitch on the right needle.

Learn to KnitLesson 3: Learn to Purl1. Hold the needle with the stitches in your left hand and the empty needle in your right hand and the loose end hanging in front of your work. The needles should be pointed toward one another

2. Insert the right needle back to front through the front of the stitch on left needle. The needles will form an "X" with the right needle on top of the left needle. Make sure that the yarn is in front of the needle.

3. Keep the needles crossed in the "X" position by holding both needles with the thumb, index and middle fingers of your left hand. Do this by holding the right needle with the thumb nail on top facing you, and the nails of the index and middle fingers underneath that right needle and facing away. Wrap the yarn around front needle, counterclockwise, from the back bringing the yarn around and in front of the right needle.

Holding the yarn in place around the needle with thumb and index finger of your right hand, push the right needle down and away from you through the center of the stitch on the left needle The right needle will now be behind the left needle.

5. Pull the remaining yarn off the left hand by pulling the right needle to the right so the newly formed stitch slides off the left needle onto the right needle.
