Learn More about the Great Stone Church

Find the Ruins of the Great Stone Church, located #16 on the Mission Map and Guide.

Fun Facts about the Great Stone Church:

• Thechurchisshapedlikeacross• TheChurchtooknineyearstobuild.• Constructionstartedin1797andwas

completed in 1806.• Eachstonewascutbyhandwithtoolslike

hammers and chisels (a metal tool with a sharp edge for cutting).

• Onaverageeachblockweighedanywherefrom 100 lbs – 1,000 lbs.

• Thestonewascutfromaquarry(aplacewherestoneistakenfrom)locatedapproximately2-3 miles away from the Mission.

• Stoneswerecutandtheneithercarriedbycartsordraggedtotheconstructionsite.• Thehalfcircleindentationsinthewallarecallednichesandwereonceusedtoholdreligious

statues.• December8,1812,duringMass(achurchservice)alargeearthquakecausedtheGreatStone

Church’s destruction. According to the report, the bell tower fell down on top of the church, causing the roof to collapse. Forty people died in the disaster.

Learn More about the Central Courtyard/Quadrangle

Find the Central Courtyard, located #12 on the Mission Map and Guide.

Fun Facts about the Central Courtyard:

•MissionSanJuanCapistrano,likeothermissions, is shaped in a quadrangle (a square or rectangular courtyard with a set of buildings surrounding it).

• ThefourMissionbuildingsinthequadrangle (the North, East, South, and WestWing)werenotcompleteduntil1793,17yearsaftertheMissionwasfounded.

• DuringtheMissionDays(1776–1834),theCourtyardwasjustanopendirtarea;therewereno fountains or gardens.

• DuringtheMissionDaysthecourtyardwasabusyplacewithmanypeopleworkingoutsideandinsidethemanyrooms.TheSouthWingwasusedasthePadres’LivingQuarters,theEastWingwasusedasaChurch(SerraChapel),theNorthandWestWingbuildingswereusedforvariousMissionindustriessuchasblacksmithing,woodworking(carpentry),leatherworking,winemaking,weavingandclothproduction.

Learn More about Serra Chapel

Find the Serra Chapel, located #13 on the Mission Map and Guide.

Fun Facts about the Serra Chapel:

• TheSerraChapelwascompletedin1782,makingitoneoftheoldestbuildingsonthe grounds, and one of oldest buildings in California.

• FatherSerracelebratedMass(churchservice)intheSerraChapelin1783.Thechapelistheonlychurchleftinexistencethat Father Serra visited.

• TheoilpaintingsintheframeswithcrossesabovethemareaseriesofpaintingscalledtheStationsoftheCross,showingthefinalmoments of Jesus’ life on earth.

• ThelargestonebowlontherightsideofthechurchiscalledaBaptismalFont,andwasusedfor the baptism of children and adults.

• Thelargegoldaltarinthebackofthechurchiscalleda“retablo”andisnotoriginaltotheMission.ItwasbroughttotheMissionintheearly1900s.Itismadeofwoodwithgoldleafpaint.

• ThestatueandpaintingsshowingamanholdingaredflagisSaintJohnofCapistrano,thesaint this Mission is named after.

• DuringtheMissiondaystheydidnotusepews(woodenbenches).Insteadpeoplesatontheground.Thebenches/pewswereaddedintheearly1900s.

• SerraChapelisstillusedasachurchtoday.Thelitcandlesyouseerepresentsomeone’sprayer, please do not touch.

Fun Facts about the Industrial Area:

• Industrialmeanstomakeormanufacturesomething.

•Missionindustriesincludedmakingtallowcandlesandsoap,makingleatherbytanningcowhides,andmakingandusingmetal(metalfurnaces,andblacksmithing).

• Tallowismadebyboilingdowncowfat.• Leathermakingrequiredthecowtobetanned.TheMission“tanner”skinnedthecow,removedtheblood,guts,andfur,andplacedtheskinsintanningvatsfilledwithanacidicsolutiontosoak.Theprocessturnedtheskininto leather.

•MissionSanJuanCapistranoistheonlyCaliforniaMissiontomakeitsownmetal.TheCatalan Furnaces turned iron ore (mineral) into usable metal.

•Metalwasusedtomaketools.Theblacksmithwouldmaketoolslikenails,hammers,doorhinges, and any other tools that were needed in building and maintaining the Mission.
