* Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift 1912. His theory was very controversial and only widely accepted until the last 1950s. (After his death in 1930.)

* Continental Drift is the process that explains the slow movement of Earth’s crust and continents over time. Continental drift is supported by the process of Plate Tectonics.

*
* Pangea is the name given to the supercontinent that our continents broke off from. It is believed that at one time the continents formed one large landmass that eventually drifted apart.
* Fossil evidence supports this concept. * Pangea Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmTgeKB8Erw

* Convergent Boundaries are where two plates meet and move towards each other. * Two things can happen when plates move
towards each other * 1. The plates collide and form mountains * Continental plate to Continental plate
* 2. One plate will subduct, or go under, the other plate forming trenches. * Oceaninc plate to Continental Plate

* * Divergent boundaries are where two plates
meet and move away from each other. * Divergent boundaries can form mountain ranges
from the molten rock that pushes up through. The most popular is the mid-ocean ridge located in the Atlantic Ocean.

*
* Transform (Transverse) Boundaries are where two plates border each other and they slide past each other.
* The plates build up friction and stress that needs to be released and then they slide.
* This movement is the what creates earthquakes.

* The Earth is divided into 3 main layers:
* Core – Inner & Outer
* Mantle
* Crust – Continental & Oceanic
* The Crust is broken up into pieces which move
called Tectonic Plates.
* Convective flow in the Mantle pushes the plates apart. * Links: http://www.kidsgeo.com/geology-for-kids/0020-crust-mantel-core.php
* * Earthquakes are caused from movement in Tectonic
Plates. * Stress builds up when two plates are moving against
each other, the release in stress we feel as an earthquake. * The Epicenter is the location on the surface directly
above where the plates moved/relieved stress. * The Focus is the location under the surface where
the plates moved/relieved stress. * Earthquakes Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSgB1IWr6O4

*
* Volcanoes are typically formed along sunduction zones where tectonic plates sinks into the hot Mantle. Volcanoes that do not occur along boundaries are called hot spots.
* The melted rock called Magma below the Earth’s surface, makes its way back up to the surface through cracks.
* The melted rock above the surface, lava, builds up layer at a time and then forms a volcano.
