Leading Hotels – Teacher Support for Activities 1-3Here are some possible approaches to the activities and some suggestions for answers.
Activity 1
If using hard copy, learners can work out the ranking by the number of hotels in the UK and write the order on the table. Learners could then reproduce the table to reflect the revised order/ranking. Learners can do this either by hand or by entering the figures into a table in a word-processing file or into a spreadsheet.

Activity 3
This is a good opportunity to introduce learners to well known hotel brands and companies, and to discuss terms such as companies, groups, chains, brands etc.
When carrying out their research learners may find that there have been some changes since August 2008, for example in ownership, branding or operational arrangements, in which case they should make a note of these and/or update the tables from Activity 1.
Findings will vary according to the local area researched, with top hotel chains being well represented in some areas of the UK and less so in others. It might help learners to carry out their research in pairs. If learners carry out research about different local area, they could share their findings and discuss them with their partner, in a group or with the rest of the class.
