I guess many of us already know this for a fact, although we may not like to admit it.

I am referring to a recent study that reveals many Hongkongers customarily buy more clothing than they actually wear. I suspect this phenomenon stems from the fact that mall-hopping is such a popular pastime that many just can’t resist the temptation to buy on impulse.

The build-up of merchandise simply adds to the clutter in the confines of local homes, and detracts from the décor. Furniture and fittings, in particular, require careful planning and clear thinking in terms of aesthetics, functionality and complementarity, because you can’t even hide them if they don’t fit.

The rapid advance in technology means that, these days, many avant-garde lifestyle shops have adopted state-of-the-art software in their marketing. The use of virtual reality equipment and the deployment of 3D printing techniques mean that customers no longer need to rely solely on their imagination to visualize how their home would look with various merchandise, color combinations and placements.

As always, Home has assembled a fascinating array of the latest products to enhance your domestic enjoyment.

Enjoy European elegance in the comfort of your home

By bringing European-made quality furniture and fittings to homes all over Hong Kong, Ulferts has been offering the pinnacle of luxury living to

local households with its meticulously selected furniture along with a professional matching service.

Through four decades o f u n r e m i t t i n g e f f o r t s , U l f e r t s

h a s n o t o n l y g a i n e d widespread recogni t ion

from the industry, but has also earned the invaluable

trust of local consumers who are known for their picky taste and

uncompromising attitude. A time-tested leader in the local furniture market,

Ulferts has an 11-storey warehouse, 6 showrooms and will soon be opening its biggest store at Kowloon Bay.

The five DNAsRicky Ng, Chief Executive Officer of Ulferts, points out that,

over the past 42 years, the company has adhered steadfastly to its mission of ‘uplifting living standards by importing quality furniture to homes’. To achieve this, Ng says Ulferts relies on its five DNAs, namely European style, quality products, prestigious shopping experience, professional service, and time to market, which are embedded in every aspect of their operation.

Bringing a piece of Europe to Hong KongUlferts looks, in the main, to Europe in sourcing quality products

with a distinguished style. “I reckon more than 90% of our furniture are imported from Europe, with the majority coming from Italy and Germany,” he explains.

“Europe is ahead of many other places in terms of design and application of new materials,” Ng explains. “Italian furniture design, for instance, is renowned throughout the entire continent, while

Germany is highly respected for its practicality and innovation.”Citing an Italian “Super Marble” table as example, Ng says it

is resistant to scratch and corrosion, but is much less bulky than average. Thinner and lighter, “Super Ceramic” makes it easier to extend the table, and the material is fast gaining consumers’ favor.

To cater to local consumers’ preference for flexibility and mobility in their choice of furniture, Ulferts accords a high priority to German products. “When it comes to practicality, German-made furniture and fittings are always amongst our top picks,” Ng notes. “Compared to other countries, German sofas usually have a slimmer handle, which leaves more space for seating and fits better into small apartments.”

As quality control is a prime consideration, Ulferts sends their staff overseas to meet suppliers, share ideas, tour factories and ensure that specifications are met. They also attend furniture shows every year to look for innovations and creative designs, source new suppliers, and keep up with the latest trends for the benefit of consumers.

“Prestigious shopping experienceSparing no efforts, Ulferts makes sure that shoppers have

a pleasurable experience. Naturally scented with fresh flora, its showrooms immediately exude a pervading sense of coziness and home-like comfort. The harmonious mix and match of furniture and decorations puts shoppers in a perfect frame of mind to fantasize over their dream home.

“Visual merchandising is critical to nurturing a favorable first impression,” Ng emphasizes. “The color tone, setting and placement of the furniture in our showroom stores have all been tailor-designed by a professional team to spark customers’ imagination.”

"We care about you"Another important DNA that gives Ulferts the edge in a highly

competitive market is the professional performance of its caring staff. Citing an actual example, Ng reveals that about six months ago, a

walk-in customer placed an order at noon for 20 identical chairs for a party he was holding that same evening. In spite of the very short lead time, Ulferts’ staff managed to sort out the complex logistics of collecting all the required chairs from different stores, and lining up transport for delivery to the customer’s home in time.

“It’s a fine example of our staff rising to the challenge, and demonstrating their dedication to Ulferts’ customer-centric philosophy,” Ng says.

Furthermore, the company is reputed for its after-sales service, as it takes care of the finest details, ranging from providing advice on home furnishing to cleaning marks after installing the furniture. “We take customers’ needs seriously. That's how we gain their trust and loyalty,” Ng adds.

Recognition from the industryIn order to maintain its outstanding service, Ulferts has always

invested generously in its human resources. It not only spends months inducting new staff before putting them to work, but also regularly sends the frontline staff to furniture shows in Europe to enhance their sense of furniture fashion, and update them with the latest industry information and knowledge.

Their efforts have won them the top individual prizes in the Furniture & Home Accessories category for both Junior Frontline and Supervisory Levels of the 2016 Service and Courtesy Awards organized by the Hong Kong Retail Management Association. Regarded as the Oscars of the retail trade in Hong Kong, the Awards represent a coveted accolade, as contestants have to go through several stages of adjudications, including secret customer visit, group interview and personal interview.

Ulferts’ concerted efforts have also won them another prestigious award from the Hong Kong Institute of Marketing - the Market Leadership in Furniture Retail of the 2016 Market Leadership Award - in recognition of their high standard of marketing expertise, standards, ethics and knowledge of the industry.

“I am naturally most gratified with these sterling results,” enthuses Ng. “All credits go to my hard-working colleagues.”

Italians have a flair for aesthetics, and when this is combined with practicality in their furniture, they make your home a true heaven on earth.

Dine and rest in style

Sacai Italian Leather SofaMade of nubuck leather, this sofa

offers the ultimate sensation of velvety softness. In addition, selected feathers are exclusively added into the seat and back cushions to give a spongy elastic feeling. The corner seat can be moved out to be used as a footrest, while the back cushions can be lifted up with an air spring mechanism.

Marlon Italian Leather SofaAlso made of nubuck leather to give

a natural touch, this sofa is noted for the sophist icated st i tching craftsmanship, resulting in a unique stitching pattern on the back cushions.

Sharpei Italian Leather SofaSharpei Italian Leather Sofa is

another masterpiece that comes with nubuck leather. It is perfect for family gatherings as i t has a single armrest design that comes with a wooden tray to serve snacks and drinks.

Akko TP-20 Italian Dining TableIn applying a newly-invented material

called Super Ceramic, the Akko TP-20 Italian Dining Table offers an unbelievably smooth and scratch-free surface. Elegant as it is, the table is beautifully balanced with a base that is made entirely of wood.

Mass Italian Dining TableThis table of fers a lo t o f fun

by replacing the typical solid and imposing base with a hollowed-out bird cage design. Thus the base becomes a light-weight component, while the wooden table top creates more visual impact. A good match for those who live a stylish but low-profile life.

Tavolante Italian Dining TableThis table best manifests how excellent Italian craftsmanship

can take furniture to a whole new level. If you look carefully, you will see the glass legs penetrate the table surface and make up parts of the table surface. The transparent glass stand creates an impression of the table floating on air, adding a modern touch to your home.

Giro Italian Dining TableThis round table will amaze you with

its telescopic synchronised opening mechanism. Just a gentle pull, and the two glass surfaces will slide gently from the bottom and expand the round table into a oval shape.

Leslie Lam

Living room

Dining area

Welcome home!A veteran interior designer, Leslie Lam shares with us his insights and know-how, as well as philosophies behind his latest residential project.

Q: What is the essence of interior design and what do you hope to bring to your clients?

A: Interior design is much more than art that solely focuses on aesthet ics and creat iv i ty ; i t must also take practical elements like expediency and usabil i ty into account to integrate people and space, thereby enhancing the quality of life.

The client for the Centre Stage project is a young couple who likes to invite friends home for a party, and thus, they need a large, open living and dining area. With this in mind, I decided to transform the entire entry floor into the living and dining area, in a contemporary style with a touch of luxury.

Q: What are some of the s ign i f icant features o f Centre Stage?

A: As the living and dining area is the focal point of this project, I want to make sure that there is an adequate and welcoming space for serving wine and mingling with guests. So I have come up with a well-appointed open bar and kitchen, together with a marble wall to add to the overall elegance.

With panoramic views of the city, the rooftop garden is another great place to hang out with friends, so I have made provisions for a bar table in a comfortable cushioned setting.

I have also installed a projector, together with dimmable lights, to make a private cinema.

Master bedroom

Study roomRooftop garden Cloakroom (walk-in closet)

Q: What challenges were encountered in this project, and how did you overcome them?

A: The main challenge for the design is in the bedroom where the ceiling is a bit low. I have, therefore, employed hidden lighting to relieve the pressure. Also, by streamlining the various design elements, the bedroom looks longer and bigger.

Q: Can you share with us some of your insights in interior design, in terms of spatial utilization?

A: In order to create more ‘space’, we have to look at both the visual and physical aspects. I tend to go for open plan with the addition of mirrors. What’s more, I try to leave the windows uncovered, allowing natural light to flow through freely. This will make the room look more spacious, and facilitates a seamless merging between indoor and outdoor living.

Q: What inspires you to become an interior designer?

A: Interior design is, in essence, a ‘wish-granting’ industry, as we realize people’s vision and make dreams come true. I have loved drawing since my childhood and have always been playing around with space and materials. It is this passion that has driven me to pursue this career; I derive a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction in devising new designs for the betterment of the living environment.

Over the last 20 years of my interior design career, I have undertaken a wide range of projects, including residential units, show flats, service apartments, clubhouses and large-scale hospitality developments.

Q: What is your take on the interior design industry in general?

A: As an industry, interior design is never static. Lifestyles and fashion trends evolve over time, and people’s taste also changes at different stages of their lives. As professionals in the field, we make sure we keep abreast of the times, and stay tuned to the market, because that means we would be well- positioned to offer constructive ideas to our clients.

A home away from home, Hong Kong has been chosen by Tom Dixon as its first branch in Southeast Asia. Set to open in May, the 1400-

sq ft Tom Dixon duplex store is located in the heart of the city – at the vibrant and creative Soho district of Central.

Local partner A Matter of Design will act as the operator for the new shop.

“We are a proudly British company, based in London where we design, develop and distribute our innovations. But we have always thought of ourselves as an international brand,” Dixon explains. “Therefore, we now plant our feet and set up a new space for customers and professionals in Asia. There’s no more optimum location to place our new hub than Hong Kong, and no better street than Hollywood Road to make our global ambitions come true.”

Established in 2002, Tom Dixon is a design and manufacturing company of lighting, furniture and accessories. Obsessed with honest materials and committed to innovative design, the brand is on a mission to revive the British furniture industry. Tom Dixon launches

new collections annually with products sold in more than 65 countries.

One of the iconic lighting pieces to bring home is JACK. Designed in 1994, JACK is one of Tom Dixon’s first experiences with plastics. Made by air rotational moulding, with a 5-part tool – the plastic polythene pellets are added into the tool and rotated at a high temperature, giving the lighting masterpiece an even wall thickness.

JACK was awarded Millennium Mark status in 1997 by the British government. It is now part of the permanent exhibitions in the Victorian and Albert Museum in London,

and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in US. Launched this April, the new edition of JACK light is safe for

use in wet spaces, perfect for styling with panache in Hong Kong’s high humidity conditions. Tom Dixon | 52 Hollywood Road, Central | www.tomdixon.net

Combining manufacturing quality, technological excellence, and

aesthet ic e legance, Giopato & Coombes design, develop and produce lights with emotional impacts.

Slender thread-like structures in brushed brass, Cirque can change form to create infinite geometric compositions. The figure, suggesting circus gear, is interrupted by capsules that project continuous light. Each capsule, made in ribbed glass, is

crafted with a lathe using very refined technique, so that the light can conduct along the entire length.

A perfect balance between iconic metal light setting and colored precious ‘gems’, Gioielli pays tribute to the painstaking work of the

goldsmith. The sculptural light sconce is composed of different materials – a disk in brass with a raw materic surface; an emerald green ‘gem’ in blown

Murano glass; and a ‘partridge eye’ – spherical crystal lens enclosed in a cylinder of shaped brass, that immediately catches the fancy of the observer.

An elegant glass chain, joined by metal rings with a matte gold-plated finish that contain an LED strip, Lace reflects immaculate skills behind the craftsmanship and design of individual

parts. The name also suggests the delicacy of the typical lace of the island of Burano in Italy. With bubble-like glass shapes, the Bolle lamps are created with a blown glass technique called ‘a lume’. The product is available in single bubble and 6 or 4 bubbles. These clusters of

bubbles bounce circular reflections onto each of the spheres, creating an even glow in the atmosphere. The central brass body is attached to the same SoftSpot LED bulbs.

The SoftSpot 7W LED warm white bulbs emit 75% of light downwards and 25% of direct lighting, creating a soft interior atmosphere. By pairing them with the innovative designs of Giopato and Coombes, you can now illuminate your space with panache. Single-minded dedicationBuilding on its 30 years of experience and expertise,

Joineur excels at interpreting the age-old Chinese concept of beauty to convert precious rosewood pieces into elegant furniture.

To ensure perfection in the finished product, the company handles the whole production process without subcontracting – from choosing wood pieces to designing, fitting tanons, crafting, polishing and painting. The dedication to quality and bespoke service has enabled Joineur to not only secure new clients, but also to keep old customers coming back for more.

Timeless MasterpieceIn expressing exquisite beauty through simplicity, Joineur drops the rigid

style of the Qing dynasty in favor of the more elegant Ming dynasty style, using rosewood as a major material to create timeless, and yet practical masterpieces.

Hardwoods are sought after throughout the world for their scarcity value and impeccable presentation. Joineur makes use of high quality hard woods, including rosewood, red and black ebony. In view of the wood density, nailing would damage the material. Hence, Joineur assembles their hardwood furniture by employing the traditional mortise-and-tenon technique, a craft that is fast fading due to the small number of apprentices taking up the skill.

Joineur takes pride in embedding the time-honored Chinese philosophy of ‘the unity of man and nature’ into its designs, and, at the same time, subtly espouses the message of environmental protection.

Joineur’s wooden furniture pieces ooze a natural and comfortable ambience, and are constructed to be passed down from generation to generation. Joineur Family Store Ltd | Shop 225, HomeSquare, Shatin | 2688 0727 | www.joineur.com

A brilliant three-tier sink system Paying attention to details, the BLANCO ETAGON 500-U in

SILGRANIT PuraDur is a new sink concept, which turns a bowl into three levels: the bottom of the bowl itself, bowl step in the middle and worktop - the edge of the bowl. Thanks to the integrated step and clever accessories, you can now prepare your food and handle cleaning all at once at the sink.

Combining functionality with high aesthetics, the versatile ETAGON rails not only allow you to store and dry washing-up utensils, but also to put your cutting board and cooking utensils on them.

Made of high quality stainless steel, the rails sit securely on the step that follows the bowl geometry of the sink. You can use them together with other BLANCO accessories, or stack them and put them away when not in use.

Innovative drain system Pleasing to the eye, the elegant BLANCO InFino with its smart drain

handling concept is the perfect sink center for any kitchen. In contrast to the common up-and-down principle, InFino is opened

and closed by turning the strainer to the right or left. Apart from manual handling, there is also the remote-controlled version, so now you don’t have to put your hands into the dirty water anymore.

Gap-and-fuss-free, InFino can be dismantled into two components for easy cleaning – the plug and the strainer. The flush integration with almost no rims or edges further makes cleaning a breeze.

Service-friendly construction with easy valve installation, InFino is available with all BLANCO sink products. Great Treasure Group | 2/F, Amber Commercial Building, 70–74 Morrison Hill Road, Causeway Bay | 3118 7449 | www.gtgroup.com.hk

Self-cleaningBoth trucking food waste to landfills and incineration generate potentially harmful emissions, as rotting food scraps also emit greenhouse gas methane.

Using a garbage disposal can play an environmentally beneficial role in helping to manage waste. Working together with capable wastewater treatment plants, food scraps can even recycle into energy and fertilizer.

Easy to install and replace, American-built InSinkErator garbage disposals will make kitchen cleanup a snap. From meal prep to cleanup, tough wastes like cornhusks, bones and melon rinds are easily whisked away with the disposals.

At the heart of InSinkErator disposers is the rugged and reliable Dura-Drive induction motor, which is designed to provide years of dependable performance. Made of stainless steel, the disposer is resistant to corrosion caused by minerals, and water exposure that may shorten its life.

Completely compatible with all InSinkErator models, the patented Quick Lock makes it fast and easy to switch out from one InSinkErator garbage disposal for another. If you are installing a disposal for the first time, all of the Quick Lock components you need comes packed in the box, so there is no need to worry.

Grind more with less noise

A new standard in grind and sound performance, the Evolution Series by InSinkErator is the most advanced line of garbage disposals available anywhere, featuring

patented MultiGrind and SoundSeal technologies.

MultiGrind uses multiple stages of grind technology to break down food waste to a fine pulp that is easily washed away. Meanwhile, the components of SoundSeal technology include advanced-level insulation, vibration-reducing connections, and a special Quiet Collar Sink Baffle that blocks noise from coming up through the sink opening. Those pieces work together to make your disposal so very quiet that you will never have to think twice about turning it on.

Speed up, dress upImagine how great it would be to have piping hot

water – ready all the time – right at the kitchen sink! Apart from disposals, InSinkErator also offers instant hot water dispensers, which make getting near-boiling water as easy as filling a glass.

Instant hot water dispenser not only speeds up preparation of meals, it is also useful for dozens of other tasks, such as heating up of milk, and making coffee and tea.

Designed to look as ‘hot’ as the water it delivers, the instant hot water faucet in designer finishes will enhance the style and functionality of your kitchen. Big performance in a small space – the gas cooktop is equipped with dual-stacked burners and two-tier flame ports for more precise control. The spark ignition system will re-ignite when the flame goes out to enhance cooking performance, while a continuous cast-iron grate allows users to slide pots and pans from burner to burner without lifting.

Enjoy grilling year-round with no flare-ups – heating with ceramic briquettes, the Grill gives food a delicious smoky flavor.

Easy way to healthy cooking – Steamer with 10 pre-set power levels enable users to do everything from proofing bread to sous vide cooking (slow cook for 8-10 hours). The advanced lid seal holds in steam, while the stackable steel pans hold up to 4.7L of water, and the electronic drain system release the water in just two minutes.

Ultra, precise temperature control – the magnetic induction technology provides 40% faster temperature response than gas and electric cooktops. The cooktop surface remains relatively cool, while the cookware is instantly heated up. The Madison Group (Sub-Zero and Wolf) | 2239 5000 | subzero.com.hk

The four values – wellbeing, innovation, design and sustainability – define Roca and underline its endeavours.

Focusing on both quality and aesthetics, Roca has established its own design department since the 1960s, producing modern and elegant

bathroom products that not only add value to your bathroom, but also provide the ultimate comfort.

Under the motto “Roca Loves the Planet”, the f i rm re in fo rces the commi tment to sustainability in its manufacturing process and in the use of its products, from the inauguration of a Zero Waste plant in Brazil to the development of products designed to reduce environmental impact. In the year of its centenary since 1917, Roca has become a global brand with presence in over 170 countries worldwide. Founded in 1921, Alessi has become one of the leading factories of Italian design, creating unique art pieces for the home that stand out both in terms of presentation and practicality.

To celebrate winning the tenth Compasso d’Oro design award (the first and most recognized design award in Italy), Alessi has added a stylish Matte Black version to its moka pot collection – Ossidiana.

Easy to use and contemporary, Ossidiana is part of Alessi’s Caffettiere d’autore, the brand’s best-selling coffee collection, which has also won awards such as the German Red Dot, American International design Award, and Design for All Quality Label.

Designed by Sicilian architect, Mario Trimarchi, Ossidiana draws inspiration from the volcanic rock – obsidian (also known as lava glass). Mario shaped the Ossidiana coffee maker by blending the traditional look of the moka coffee pot with his muse, obsidian.

“I began from a cylindrical volume, eliminating the superfluous scales of aluminum one after another, in order to arrive at a coffee maker that was like an architectural sculpture – one that felt good in your hands while it was being unscrewed,” said Mario. “Ossidiana suggests a new kind of ergonomics for household objects, and its form resembles nature, mysterious and timeless.”

Sharing the same love for coffee as Italians, especially for espresso, Alessi invites Hong Kong coffee lovers to put Ossidiana to the test, as it serves freshly brewed Italian coffee on every Saturday in May (2pm–6pm) at Alessi (Landmark Prince’s) and Town House (K-11) stores.
