“Growing Capacity, Creating Opportunities, Strengthening Outcomes”
This conference offers something for practitioners, team leaders, managers and policy makers
from all sectors. If your work brings you into contact with families and communities you will
benefit from attending. But Expect Something Different! This is NOT your usual conference
experience! As well as the opportunity to learn new information and skills to expand and extend
your current practice through the lens of ‘Place Based Practice’ and ‘Trauma Informed Care’
you will be actively invited to be part of the conversations and actions that
will help to create the change needed to best support families into the coming decades.

What do we need to understand
about the complex and rapid
social changes in society
to best support families and
communities into the future?
How can “Placed Based Practice”
and “Trauma Informed Care”
inform new ways of working to
create and expand effective
practice and service systems?
How can we best work together
to meet these challenges?

This conference seeks to draw on and
extend current practice in creating family
centred service systems that move us into
the next decade and beyond. It is vital we
can extend our knowledge base and ways
of working on a sound understanding of
the growing and changing complexities
facing our local families and communities.
We need to face the challenge of providing
flexible and responsive services. We need
to avoid contributing to the barriers
that compound complexity rather than
supporting families’ lives. To do this we
must change and grow our policy and
practice frameworks to support the best
outcomes for our most vulnerable and
least engaged families and communities.
At this conference, leading National and
International presenters will invite us to
actively explore ‘Place Based Practice’ as
a way of rising to these challenges.
The creation of ‘Trauma Informed ‘ practice
and service systems will also be explored
within the overall context of creating
effective communities of practice.
Conference conversations and actions will
focus on the need to work in informed
and collaborative ways that empower
people, supporting ongoing healing and
capacity building as the method for gaining
the best outcomes for communities,
families, children and young people.
‘Place-Based Initiatives Transforming Communities’
People need support in the process of change.
Place-based initiatives have the capacity to facilitate
change by giving people the tools they need to plan,
collaborate and execute change. Data from Australia and
internationally, points to significant differences between
and within communities in terms of the demographic
characteristics of families, their level of need, and the
configuration and accessibility of services. It therefore
makes sense that policy frameworks and services in one
community may not be the most appropriate for all of
the others. A number of tensions emerge from this
thinking. For example, the challenge of maintaining
consistency and a level of fidelity while providing
flexibility and responsiveness; and enabling communities
to be involved in planning and ‘owning’ local services
within the guidance of a strong evidence based
framework. If we get this right then it is more likely that
there will be sustainable differences to outcomes for
children and families. Source: Place Based Practice Round Table Report,

Trauma Informed Services Systems recognise the
need to work in informed and collaborative ways with
individuals, families, communities and other services in
a manner that empowers people and supports ongoing
healing as the method for gaining the best outcomes.
Trauma informed interventions recognise and respond
to the ongoing physical and emotional consequences
of trauma in the lives of the individuals, families and
communities we work with. Adopting approaches that
facilitate healing rather than unwittingly causing further
harm. The conference will give particular attention to
the impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal families and
communities. and the need to actively understand and
contribute to healing from inter-generational trauma.
