Leadership Skills in Business Communication

Communication and Leadership in today’s business place has increasingly become more complex.

Required Course Descriptions

Business Communication & Relationship Management

MGMT_X497.9 (2.5 Units)

Communication is more than talking and listening. Genuine communication requires a deep

understanding of another person's perspective. But when you take into consideration all of our biases,

behavioral idiosyncrasies, unspoken emotions, personal agendas, and unshared assumptions, this can

seem almost impossible. We rarely take time to sharpen our communication and relationship skills. This

course contains a series of sessions to do just that. Great managers can read people. They know that

employees have different skills, different concerns and different levels of motivation. Further, they know

that if they ignore these diverse needs, there is a greater chance that their employees will waste their

energy moving in the wrong direction, get frustrated with a lack of success, or just disengage from a

project or a team. Consequently, they've learned to adjust their management style to the employee's

style and the needs of the situation. This course is designed to help managers recognize the employee's

needs and remove barriers to performance.

Self Management & Self Leadership

MGMT_X496.12 (2.5 Units)

In a knowledge-based economy, the workforce must be self-managed, willing to take on greater

responsibility, accelerate and embrace rapid change and lead themselves. In this course we apply Ken

Blanchard’s “Situational Leadership” to ourselves. The focus of the course is to move the individual from

responding to the situation to being responsible for it. You will learn to gain greater satisfaction from

your work by challenging your ideas about leadership. You will learn how to build your own motivation,

confidence, skills, and commitment.

Elective Course Descriptions

Conflict Management

MGMT_X450.15 (2.5 Units)

It has been stated that everyone is someone's difficult person. Almost daily, we come in contact with

people we would characterize as difficult. They are the people we work with, sell to, depend on, and live

with. There are intimidators, manipulators, analyzers, know-it-alls, overly friendly, accommodators,

chronic complainers and whiners. Their actions consume time, energy and emotion at the expense of

productivity and morale. This course provides fresh insights and immediately usable skills needed to

quickly, confidently and assertively identify and deal with various types of people, difficult or not, in a

variety of contexts while marinating your own self confidence.

Negotiation Skills

Social Ecology_X456 (2 Units)

Traditionally, the primary negotiation strategy utilized has been a competitive approach commonly

referred to as "distributive bargaining." Recently a more cooperative approach has emerged fostering

the term "win-win" negotiation. This approach centers on interests rather than issues and attempts to

create value for each side. In an interest based negotiation, attention moves toward solution. Explore

the theory and practice of negotiating and the methods of obtaining cooperative conflict resolution.

Business professionals will benefit by examining positional bargaining, cooperative approaches to

impasses and collaborative styles of negotiation techniques.

Group Facilitation and Meeting Management Skills

Social Ecology_X450.27 (2.5 Units)

This course is designed for professionals who are involved in managing groups, meetings, boardrooms,

and multi-party mediation. A successful mediator remains neutral, is an advocate for the process, keeps

negotiations on track, and demonstrates empathy, while encouraging the parties to reach an

agreement. All of these traits require excellent communication skills. The new interaction method of

facilitation is similar yet different. Come learn the tips, techniques and skills required to achieve

effective "proactive" group management. This class will be very interactive and participation is

encouraged. Topics will include convening, setting agendas, active listening, building consensus,

overcoming resistance and turning reactionary attitudes into proactive results.

Problem Solving and Decision Making

MGMT_X493.9 (2.5 Units)

This course provides a conceptual framework for approaching problem solving and decision-making

situations with clarity and confidence. Participants build competence in making effective decisions

based on the accurate assessment of the problem and preparing creative alternative solutions.

Participants learn how to use analysis, synthesis, and positive inquiry to approach individual and

organizational problems, develop and evaluate objectives, generate effective solutions to problems,

make sound business decisions, and assess likely consequences or implications of judgment. Using case

studies and on-the-job situations encountered by the class, participants explore successful models and

proven methods that are readily transferable to their own situations.
