Leadership Jackson County
A New Year Is Upon Us. Welcome to the 2008 / 2009
Adult and Youth Leadership Classes
The leaves on the trees have turned colorful and the true beauty of fall has risen just like the daily rising of the sun. So another group of future leaders for Jackson County has been chosen. Each person chosen has demonstrated the trust, leadership, and the willingness to get involved and make a difference in Jackson County communities. This nine-month commitment will allow new friendships and relationships to be birthed through networking. One day a month for nine months, members become familiar with the ongoings in Jackson County, providing them with information that can be used to see where all of us can pitch in to make our communities better. We are glad to have all of the new class participants on board. We trust that you find the leadership class a pleasant experience.

A Note From The Chairperson I’m excited that the LJC newsletter is being revived and I appreciate Jerry Heard for taking on this task. Leadership Jackson County is a super program – for newcomers and Jackson County natives alike. I have never met a participant who has not learned some- thing new about our community needs and resources, no matter how long they have lived here. Since being in the 2001 LJC program, I’ve seen our programs evolve, change and grow as new members get involved each year while keeping the common thread of community leadership as priority. I encourage members of this year’s class to stay involved in LJC by volunteering to become sponsors or
suggesting ways we can improve. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped with LJC during my term on the Board. We are blessed to have so many people who care about one another and who share a mutual interest in the county’s well-being. A huge thanks also goes out to our sponsors, the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, the Jackson County EDA, and the Jackson County Legislative Delegation for their support, and I encourage you to take every opportunity to thank them as well. Without our sponsors, we would not be able to continue this fabulous program. I’m looking forward to the upcoming programs and seeing how LJC continues to grow under new leadership.
Please keep in mind that the LJC program depends on donations from our alumni. Local business does a wonderful job by hosting LJC classes and sponsorships, but this does not cover all expenses or funds needed for scholarships. Your annual alumni donations are used to promote and operate the Adult and Youth Leadership program and to provide scholarships to Youth Leadership graduates. We know economic times are hard right now, but it would be greatly appreciated if all adult alumni would make a sacrifice and give a yearly donation of $25 every January.
Feel free to check with Sue Wade, the current LJC Treasurer at [email protected] or County Extension Representative Themika Sims, to verify your current donation status. Themika Sims may be contacted at the Jackson County Extension Office (256) 574-2143 or by email [email protected].
Tidbit: Please keep us informed of news, especially on accomplishments or civic involvement of LJC graduates or current class members. Any information that merits printing in future editions of this newsletter would be greatly appreciated. This LJC newsletter is one method we will be using to stay in touch and keeping all members informed of LJC activities. Email information to: Jerry Heard, [email protected] or Donna Haislip, [email protected]

Congratulations to Rick Roden for being accepted into Leadership Alabama and graduating in May 2008. Leadership Alabama is a statewide nonprofit organization which each year brings together a class of 50 participants for four (4), 2-1/2 day retreats in a nine-month period. The program objective is to present to the participants a series of issues-oriented forums based on the belief that knowledge is a key element and prime motivator of leadership. Class members visit communities across the state, and as they seek a mutual understanding of the problems and priorities facing the state. They also seek to invent vital solutions to the challenges that define the future of our state.
