4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

3Week 2

Acts 2:1-41Acts 2:1-41Eureka! Bible PassageA. All who believed in Jesus met together on

the day of Pentecost. A sound like a strong wind came from heaven and filled the house. They saw what looked like tongues of fire settling on each of them. The Holy Spirit filled every believer. He gave them power to speak languages they didn’t know.

B. Jews from all over the world were in Jerusalem for Pentecost. They heard the believers speaking in their own languages. They were confused and amazed. They said, “These people are from Galilee, but we are from all over the world. How do they speak our languages?”

C. Peter stood and spoke to the crowd. He said, “Let me explain this to you. Long ago, God said, ‘I will give my Spirit to my servants. Through my Spirit, they will prophesy.’” Peter explained, “Jesus came from God and showed you many miracles. Evil men helped you crucify Him, but God brought Him back to life. We know this because we have seen Him. Now Jesus is with God, and He has given us the Holy Spirit. You killed Him, but God has made Him Lord.”

D. When the people heard this, it had an effect on them. They asked, “What can we do?”

E. Peter answered, “Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus. He will forgive your sins and give you the Holy Spirit.”

Everyone who believed Peter’s message was baptized. About 3,000 people became believers that day.

Before You ExploreLike saying “Periwinkle Pearl Pool” three times fast, explorers do things a little differently. That’s why we put this Before You Explore section on the very last page. We know you understand.

Expedition Tips are on the right and Tell It instructions are down below. Now tighten your gadget belt and explore on!

Expedition Tips■ Two types of questions help kids make faith

discoveries of their own. 1. Ask a broad question; then follow the responses of the kids to focus on specific ideas. What’s this passage say about God? What’s this passage make you want to do? 2. Use a series of specific questions, each pointing to a different idea. This introduces different discovery options, but still allows kids to make the discovery decision. What’s this passage say about forgiveness? What’s this passage say about courage? What’s this passage say about Jesus?

■ Start a Eureka! journal. Take notes on what kids share during Peaks and Pitfalls. Follow-up with them later. They’ll love the fact that you remembered. Write down faith discoveries made, fun memories, and important moments in your expeditions. Celebrate and remember all that God has done.

■ Consider Niki Knack's Gritty Journal of Adventuring as a fun icebreaker to get kids in the exploring mood at the beginning of class. There’s even an audio version on the Eureka! DVD and CD.

Doodle MixCreate a symbol for each section of the passage and put them in order.

1. Beginning with the first section of the Eureka! Bible Passage, ask for ideas of symbols that represent that section (for example, a sun, a moon, etc.).

2. Invite a student to draw on an index card a symbol that represents that section. Do the same for each section of the passage.

3. Mix up the completed cards and place them face down in the middle of a table. Mix in 3-4 blank index cards to serve as decoys. Invite kids to gather around the table.

4. Start a timer and say, “Go!” One student will choose a card and turn it over. Moving clockwise around the table, each student will turn over a new card and attempt to place it in the correct order. Students can verbally help one another as needed. Blank cards are discarded.

5. Once the cards are in the right order, stop the timer, and record your time. Try again 2-3 times to see if the class’s speed improves.

That One FaceMake faces to show off the emotions throughout the story.

1. Kids will make a face that matches the emotion of each section (or the emotion of one character from each section) of the Eureka! Bible Passage on page 3. Sections are identified by letters.

2. No words or sounds can be used. All the acting is done with the face.

3. Each child can make a different face. The class doesn’t have to show the same emotion.

4. To begin, read the first section. Invite the kids to express the emotion that matches that section or character in that section. Compliment their efforts and enjoy the process.

5. Ask one or two kids to explain why they chose their face for that section of the story.

6. Follow steps 4 and 5 for the remaining sections.

7. To conclude, read through the whole passage. See if the kids can make their faces and keep up with your narration.
