Keynote Speakers

GRACE FAVAFounder and Chief Executive Officer Autism Advisory and Support Service

Grace Fava was Winner of the 2015 Western Sydney University Women of the West Awards. Grace was nominated for her incredible devotion and support to those with autism and their families.

Grace is Founder and CEO of the Autism Advisory and Support Service (AASS), a not-for-profit charity run by parents of children with autism, to support those living with autism and their families. The AASS relies on volunteers and survives solely on funding through grants, donations and fundraising.

With two autistic sons, Grace’s passion and strong dedication to build and lead such a remarkable service comes from personal experience. Grace is constantly raising awareness by lobbying for those with disabilities and even delivering professional development talks to teachers at local schools on how best to cater for children with autism. 

Under Grace’s leadership, the services have grown and are now available in Liverpool, Bankstown, Campbelltown and Camden. It is a privilege to have Grace as a keynote speaker for the LEAD conference where she will provide invaluable insight into her experiences and what helped her in becoming a leader of the Western Sydney region.

JASON PILGRIMFounder and Owner Global Kaizen Group

Jason Pilgrim is Australia’s Number 1 Authority on Health Business Development and is a true entrepreneur and business leader within the Allied Health Industry of Australia.

After being a dual Australian representative in both swimming and triathlon, Jason focused his attention at the end of his university studies to the world of business. His first business, In2 Motion, was actually started in his final year of university (Western Sydney University student) and has since gone on to become not only a highly successful company that many others in the industry look up towards, but the most awarded Allied health Company in Australia. In2 Motion is also the only dual internationally-awarded Allied Health company, amassing a phenomenal four international business awards in the past five years.

Jason has since gone on to open several other companies within Allied and Corporate Health, utilising a variety of structures across several states. His most recent business ventures include the importing of health, medical and fitness goods into Australia, acquisition mergers of other companies, business development courses, educational programs and conferences to the Allied Health industry and one of the latest business endeavours sees him again moving further into the international business world as the founder of The Global Kaizen Group.

His business pursuits also sees him leading innovation and change in other industries apart from Allied Health, such as being one of the partners and national master franchisee for Cosmetic Skin Therapies Australia and a partner in Tower Data Analytics, within the IT and Big Data Industries.

Jason’s personal vision is to “empower and inspire lifestyle abundance” and as a result, he works heavily with dozens of Allied Health companies around Australia to ensure their businesses are best placed to achieve massive growth with guaranteed success, whilst delivering significant benefit to the communities around them.

With such experience and awarded business acumen from the long list of awards he has received, including being named the Australian Small Business 2010 Young Entrepreneur of the Year, he has remained grounded and dedicated to continual improvement.

ANNE ABBEYCounsellor Western Sydney University

Anne is a psychologist and has been a part of the student services counselling team for over six years, based at the Bankstown campus. Prior to coming to Western Sydney University Anne worked for 16 years as a Counsellor for Burnside, a non-government agency, focused on supporting disadvantaged children and families.

AGNES ARTEMIStudent Welfare Officer (International)Western Sydney University

Agnes was born in Australia with family originally from Cyprus. Agnes always had a keen interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, as well as a keen interest to learn about her own culture. So with a combined Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Arts (major Modern Greek) degrees under her belt she started her first job as a social worker with the Australian Red Cross Asylum Seeker Assistance helping newly arrived asylum seekers. Agnes stayed with the Red Cross for a few years while in between deciding to take a one year break from work to complete a Masters of Social and Political Theory overseas at the University of Cyprus. Whilst overseas, Agnes also completed some volunteer work with the Cypriot Red Cross. Agnes comes with a wealth of knowledge and Western Sydney University has been lucky enough to have her on staff as an International Student Welfare Officer for almost three years.

RENÉE BOUCHERPASS Program Coordinator Western Sydney University

Renée Boucher is the PASS Program Coordinator working with a team of dedicated staff and student facilitators to deliver weekly study sessions across Western Sydney University. Before joining PASS in 2013, Renée coordinated the MATES Mentoring Program also within Student Participation and Success. Prior to her work at the University, Renée worked in the animation and software industries in a range of producing and project management roles. Renée is inspired by bringing together teams of talented individuals and working with them to create innovative and engaging projects and programs. Developing and supporting people in their work is central to Renée’s work approach and one of the most satisfying aspects of her role. Peer programs such as PASS, empower students to help other students which add to the rewards of the Coordinator role.   

KAREN DOUGLASPASS Program Assistant Coordinator Western Sydney University

Karen Douglas is the PASS Program Assistant Coordinator at Western Sydney University, a role she has been in for the past two and a half years. Karen took up this role immediately upon arrival in Australia from New Zealand, where she had been a Secondary School English Teacher and former Secondary School Principal. This is Karen’s first position in a University and she has really enjoyed the opportunity to support learning and success for students at the next stage of their educational journey. For Karen it is a real pleasure to work directly with the PASS facilitators as they are outstanding young people who are keen to give so much back not only to fellow students but also to their university. Learning is Karen’s real passion and she always hopes that her contribution makes some small impact on the learners with whom she has had the privilege to work.

RICH EVANSDigital Strategist Launch Pad

Rich Evans has a career that spans more than 25 years in the design and marketing industries. He has spent the last 15 years running his own business, The REDD Group which now comprises a fast growing regional print media business, a number of online properties, and develops strategies and solutions for large corporate companies. His experience in marketing and technology and his skill at presenting to large audiences in an easy to understand manner makes him a sought after presenter.

MICHELLE FALCONERSenior Coordinator, Equity and Diversity Western Sydney University

Michelle Falconer is the Senior Coordinator from the Equity and Diversity team within the University. Michelle is responsible for running whole-of-university initiatives on a wide range of equity and diversity issues. She is currently working on projects about bullying prevention, LGBTIQ inclusivity, and disability. Michelle has worked as an equity practitioner in several universities for the past 10 years, and earlier led an advocacy team, worked in a community services watchdog and did freelance work from time to time. She finds facilitating interactive workshops a favourite part of her job and has extensive experience doing so.

NICOLE GISMONDOStudent Campus Council and W’SUP Student Editor Western Sydney University

Nicole is in her third year of a Bachelor of International Studies/Laws. She comes from the outer Western Sydney Blue Mountains region. This is her second year as Clubs Representative on Parramatta SCC. Last year she was also on the SCC and has been Chair of the peak clubs body, the SAG Forum for the last two years. Nicole has served as both External Competitions and Competitions Officer on the Western Sydney Debating Union and has competed in the Australian, Australasian and Australian Women’s Debating Championships over the last two years. This year Nicole has taken on the role of Women’s Officer on Student Representation, and is the president of the Western Sydney Women’s Collective.

TRISHA HARRISCareers Education Consultant Western Sydney University

Trisha has worked as a Careers Education Consultant with Western Sydney University for the past seven years. Prior to this she managed various Disability and Employment services within the community, specialising in Mental Health and employment. She implemented training to assist people to gain ongoing, meaningful employment and had a strong focus on networking with employers to create suitable and successful employment opportunities. During her management roles Trisha took part in strategic planning of programs and expanded these programs to assist more job seekers across NSW. Trisha has developed and presented many programs and workshops at Western Sydney University on researching, career, volunteering, general careers information as well as assisting Careers in winning an Award for their participation in the annual Careers Disability Forum. Trisha has studied Social Science (Criminology), Counselling and Career Counselling at Western Sydney University and ACU.

LOUISE INGERSOLLLecturer, Human Resources and Management Western Sydney University

Louise has taught in the fields of Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations for over ten years and has published on a range of areas including management strategy in the retail industry, Vocational Education and Training (VET), bargaining structures and trade union strategy. Completed in 2006, the thesis for her Master of Commerce (Honours) degree explored the implementation of New Apprenticeships within the retail industry. She is currently a PhD candidate at Curtin University researching work, employment and careers in the Australian Film Industry. Prior to her academic appointment at Western Sydney University, Louise was employed as an assessment officer with the NSW Vocational Education and Training Accreditation Board (VETAB). She is currently the Western Sydney University Advocate for the Australian Human Resources Institute and is dedicated to enriching the student experience via industry engagement and professional development. She enjoys writing poetry and listening to hip hop.

DALYA KAREZIStudent Representative Council Western Sydney University

Dalya Karezi is currently studying Podiatric Medicine at Campbelltown campus. Dalya is the Vice-Chair of the Campbelltown Student Campus Council, a member of Student Representative Council, and President of the Western Sydney Refugee Association on Campbelltown campus. Dalya has worked in close collaboration with international students as an English Facilitator, and has participated in the MATES program and Transition Success. 

JENNIFER KENSEYManager Student Welfare Services Western Sydney University

Jennifer Kensey is the Manager of the Student Welfare Service, within the area of Student Support Services. Jen has been working at Western Sydney University for the past seven years. Prior to her work at the University, Jen worked in the community sector, assisting individuals in need including people with mental illness, people with dementia, people with a disability, and their careers. Jen has worked in a number of leadership roles and supported staff in multidisciplinary teams. Jen is passionate about supporting the welfare of Western Sydney University students, to enable them to succeed in their studies and future careers. Jen works with a team of dedicated and enthusiastic professionals, who are equally dedicated to ensuring our students achieve their potential.

PHILLIP MARLEROrganisational Development Consultant Western Sydney University

Phillip has extensive and varied experience in a number of Senior Organisational Development, Learning and Development and consulting roles.  He has worked in the Federal and State Public Sectors, the corporate sector and his own training and consulting business.  He has worked with many groups of different staff and managers from all levels, across a variety of different industries and professions.  Phillip has also owned and managed two large Hospitality based businesses in Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Phillip managed the Organisational Development and Learning function for a company with around 2,500 employees. He was also Chief Executive Officer of the company’s Enterprise Registered Training Organisation. One of Phillip’s key interests is facilitating staff and managers to move through change, building productive working relationships and achieving desired and maximised business outcomes.  Effective influence and negotiation skills are two of his many strengths when leading people, teams and organisations through change and ensuring success.

DONNA MORRISCounsellor Western Sydney University

Donna Morris holds qualifications in psychology and social work from Sydney University. Donna has been a Counsellor at the Western Sydney University Counselling Service for some years. In addition to individual client focused interventions, she regularly runs workshops on Managing Time, Maximising Memory, and Exam Anxiety, just to name a few. Prior to working in tertiary education, Donna worked in mental health, both at institutional and community levels, in the legal system providing psychological-social assessments for sentencing in criminal matters and in palliative care working with dying patients and their bereaved families. In her position at Western Sydney University, Donna is presented with a multitude of issues and concerns from personal to academic matters. A very typical presentation is that of procrastination. Donna believes that procrastination is an everyday life phenomenon and one that can be reduced or even in some cases eliminated to enable students to derive the best of their experience at university and in their life in general.

INU RANASenior Business Advisor Launch Pad

Inu Rana is a Senior Business Advisor with Launch Pad, Western Sydney University. Inu is a highly experienced business owner and professional advisor with over 16 years of experience working with both large and small businesses in range of industries including, industrial design, arts, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, professional services and hospitality. Inu has worked both in Australia and internationally developing and delivering specialised training and mentoring, speaking at conferences and consulting peak industry and government bodies on areas such as business growth and productivity. Inu is recognised for her highly practical approach working with businesses to identify their issues and constraints and then developing strategies that enable them to grow and prosper. She is passionate about supporting small businesses to identify ways of infusing their passion with strong business acumen to build profitable and sustainable enterprises.

DALE REES-BEVANDirector SpeakersBank Australia

Dale Rees-Bevan has worked in her capacity as a professional speaker and trainer in South Africa, UK and Australia. Dale is a speaker, trainer, facilitator, and mentor who has worked with people from all walks of life. Dale has designed, coordinated and run training programs for groups ranging from plumbers to doctors, lawyers to students and loves the variety in group needs and interests. In 2005 Dale was invited to join the board of SpeakersBank UK (now Speakers’ Trust – the largest speaking training organisation in UK) where she served a short term before moving to Australia.

JACKIE SIMPSONCareers Education Consultant Western Sydney University

Jackie was a high school teacher for ten years before exploring other avenues such as sales, running her own restaurant, and renovating houses (long before it became trendy on reality TV!). She found her real calling when she stumbled into Adult Education, eventually gaining a Master of Education. Her extensive experience in assisting long-term unemployed groups prior to moving into Higher Education means that she has developed creative strategies for assisting students with their transition into the workforce. She has worked at Western Sydney University for over twelve years and has recently returned from a year in Vietnam as a Career Counsellor. Jackie sees herself foremost as an educator, facilitating career exploration and building lifelong career management skills for students. She is currently the Team Leader for the Career Development Learning Team at Western Sydney University.

HANK VAN DER MERWELeadership Development Strategist Mastery Global

Hank is an internationally acclaimed Leadership Development Strategist, Facilitator, Keynote Speaker, Consultant, Coach and Author on the subject of Strategic and Business Leadership and Personal Mastery. Ben Weir is one the chaplains at Western Sydney University (from the Uniting Church). Ben has a background in teaching, counselling and coaching; as well as in leadership development in the community and not-for-profit sectors. In addition to this, he is a fully qualified yoga teacher. Ben loves helping people bring their full humanity into their places of work and study: healthy minds in healthy bodies can build a better, kinder world!

Julie Xiberras is a Counsellor on the Kingswood Counselling team. Prior to working at Western Sydney University Julie worked for Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia, the NSW Sexual Assault Service and Juvenile Justice. Julie has also worked in the Rehabilitation sector, delivering a variety of training programs; Pain management, Anxiety and Stress Management, Time-management, vocational planning and Motivational Interviewing to name a few.
