Welcome to the Albany and Linn County Area!
Linn County is full of beautiful historic communities with friendly, helpful people.
Whatever time of year you arrive, there will be many events, activities and attractions for
you and your group to enjoy.
Whether your group is made up of culture seekers or they are seeking culinary
delights, whether they are relaxers or adventurers, there will be something for them to enjoy here in the Albany, Linn County area.
Many of the towns in Linn County have historic buildings with antique and unique shops. Give your group time to browse some of these shops . . .
they may nd treasures to take home.
Many of the local communities have a variety of events. Some, like the Northwest Art & Air Festival (held in Albany the weekend before Labor
Day), are award winning events. Some, like the Brownsville Pioneer Picnic (started in 1887), are an age old tradition. The Lebanon Strawberry
Festival boasts the Worlds largest strawberry shortcake. Or for a down home good time spend the day at the Linn County Fair (mid July)
complete with farm animals and top name entertainment!
Travel along one of Oregons newest scenic by-ways, Over the River and Trough the Woods. This route follows rushing streams through valley
communities, pioneer towns and into the rugged Cascade Mountains where placid lakes and breath taking views await.
If you would like some help nding your way around the region, ask one of the local shop keepers or stop by one of the local travel information
centers. The folks in Linn County are very friendly and always ready to help.
On behalf of the community, I am pleased to welcome you to Albany and the Linn County area. I hope you and your group enjoy your stay.

Whatever it is that interests your tour group
you will nd a festival or event here in the mid-
Willamette Valley and Linn County that will t
. . . and folks here know how to throw a party!
Some annual events have been happening
every year for the last 100 or more years.
A Culinarytraveler may enjoy the Lebanon
Strawberry Festival. The rst full weekend
in June each year you will nd this 100-year
old event in full swing. It features an old
fashioned community parade complete with a
Festival Queen and her court. Enjoy a sample
of the Worlds Largest Strawberry Shortcake
served up for free at the end of the parade.
Pair a visit to the Strawberry Festival with a
visit to a local winery like Marks Ridge, one
of Oregons newest wineries. Let your group
enjoy a glass of Oregon Pinot and the evening
out on the patio beside the tasting room
which overlooks the valley . . . it doesnt get
better than this!
If you are a Culture Seeker, come to the
Historic Home Tours in Albany or
Carriage Me Back in Brownsville. In
Albany, the last Saturday in July brings the
annual Historic Homes Interior Tour
and the second Sunday in December brings
the Christmas Parlour Tour. These two
tours offer event goers the opportunity to
see examples of the wonderful architecture
from days gone by and how people live in
these beautiful historic homes. Brownsville
adds a air for the dramatic to its history
with its Carriage Me Back tour. The featured
vignettes tell a story about the people of this
small town on a particular day in history.
The tours in both communities are very
popular with event goers.

The Culture Lover will nd numerous cultural
experiences in Albany and Linn County.
Brownsville, just south of Albany on Highway
228, is a wonderful place to start your cultural
tour of Linn County. First settled in 1846,
Brownsville is a small town with fascinating
people, classic houses, picket fences, old-
fashioned front porches and a lazy river
that winds through the beautiful city park.
Experience a leisurely pace in the charming
shops, memorable restaurants and unique
museums. Enjoy the friendly communitywhere life is sweet and the welcome is warm.
Base your group at one of Albanys great
hotels just off I-5 Halseys Travel Lodge
Pioneer Villa, or Harrisburgs River Bend
Resort. Then head east to Brownsville on
228 and have breakfast at Randys Main
Street Coffee. From there, spend the
morning exploring downtown Brownsville.Remember the classic 1986 ri tes-of-passage
movie Stand By Me? It was lmed in
Brownsville and by following the walking
tour map, you can visit the hot spots where
the action took place.
Explore more of Brownsvilles history by visiting
the Linn County Historical Museum
and the 1881 Moyer House. Displays and
museum volunteers bring local stories to life.
This museum has one of the last wagons used
on the Oregon Trail. It also houses a theater
where you can choose to watch one of several
short movies about the past.
The morning will be over much too soon
and then it is time to stop for lunch at
Brownsvilles Corner Caf where you will
enjoy wonderful food and a great atmosphere.
Be sure to ask the staff how they get the dollar
bills to stick to the dining room ceiling.
After lunch, for a totally unique experience,
head back east on 228 and visit the Living
Rock Studio Museum and Gift Shop.
This museum features rocks, art, postcards,
photographs, history and displays. This is one
attraction you wont want to miss.
From the Living Rock Museum, head west and
then north on Highway 99 to Shedd. There,
Thompsons Mills is a unique reminder of
times past, chronicling 150 years of Oregon
rural life. It is the oldest water-powered grain
mill in the state: its system of waterways,
dams, control gates, ditches and dikes has
moved water from the Calapooia River to
the mill head gates since 1858. A water right
that predates statehood produced the water
ow that ran the milling machines. Pioneer
families came with their grain crops and leftwith the our that would keep them through
the coming year. Visitors to the mill today wil
see interpretive exhibits with antique milling
machinery, hand-hewn timbers and mortise
and tenon construction.
After a day full of Linn County culture, go back
south on Highway 99 to Harrisburg, a quaint
little town in Linn County that hosts a GoodOl Fashioned 4th of July event with a
reghters breakfast, parade, concerts and
reworks. Harrisburg also hosts the Summer
Sounds Outdoor Concerts on Tuesday
nights and Summer Flix Outdoor Movies
on Friday nights in August at the river. Have
dinner at the newly opened River Bend Resort
Restaurant where diners enjoy good food with
a river view. From their river location, you can
enjoy both Summer Sounds and the Good
Ol Fashioned 4th of July reworks without
leaving the resort. Then head back to your
home base and rest up for another day of fun
in Linn County.

What could be more relaxing than a quiet
drive through the countryside? Rolling hills
of peaceful pastures and family farms will
welcome you to a path less travelled, through
Linn Countys Covered Bridge Tour. Known
as the covered bridge capitol of the west, Scio
is right in the middle of ve covered bridges
spanning Thomas and Crabtree Creeks.
Just off the covered bridge trail is the
town of Lebanon, home of the Worlds
Largest Strawberry Shortcake, during
the Strawberry Festival in early June, and a
great place to shop for antiques. In the midst
of Oregons scenic wonderland, Lebanon
is a strategic home-base for year-round
recreation. Known for their small-town charm
and high-tech vision of the future, Lebanon
offers all the services you are accustomed
to plus numerous recreational activities.
The South Santiam River owing throughLebanon offers shing, swimming, canoeing
and rafting opportunities at the public boat
landings, riverside parks, and two nearby
reservoirs.
Base your group in Lebanon, at the Shanico
Inn or Valley Inn. After a hearty breakfast at
the Apple Tree Restaurant, head north to
Scio. On the way, the Larwood Bridge offers
a unique experience to witness Roaring River
ow into Crabtree Creekunusual enough
to make it into Ripleys Believe It Or Not. A
small park allows visitors to stop, take pictures,
and get their feet wet or just sit and take in this
peaceful setting. Look across the river to see
the waterwheel that supplied water power to
nearby residents in years gone by.
After exploring the covered bridges, head
to Scios Covered Bridge Coffee House
or The Old Silver Dollar for lunch. Be sure
to stop by the Historic ZCBJ Hall. Built in
1922, it has been maintained with loving care
by members of the Scio community for 84
years. The initials Z.C.B.J. stand for Zapandi
Czechoslovakia Brakaska Jednota, or WesternCzechoslovakian Fraternal Association. The
Czechoslovakian community moved to the
Scio area in the late 1890s and the hall was
constructed to house the many community
events.
If you crave some more relaxing activities,
head east, where the Cascade
Mountains draw thousands
of photographers, naturalists, and nature
buffs, and even those who just want to relax
and watch the wildlife. Mountain lakes, trails
and waterfalls are just a few of the areas
attractions. Anglers nd bountiful shing
on more than a dozen lakes and reservoirs
nearby. Boaters, canoers and swimmers
alike nd Foster Lake and Green Peter
Reservoir perfect destinations for relaxing.
If a round of golf is how you relax, then
Elkhorn Golf Course in Lyons, or
Pinewood or Mallard Creek golf courses in
Lebanon, offer an option for every budget and
skill level. Originally a gentleman only sport,
today everyone is welcome.
In the evening, take time out to enjoy
tree-lined parks or stroll along Lebanons
waterfronts and have dinner at Mama
Lindas Italian Restaurant or Sum Yan
Chinese Restaurant. Then round out your
relaxing day with a glass of wine at Marks
Ridge Winery between Lebanon and Sweet
Home. Open weekends or by appointment,
the breathtaking views entice visitors to sit,
sip and stay awhile before tucking in for the
night. Be sure to bring your camera.

covered bridges
31
D I D Y O U k N O W . . . ?
Covered bridges could provide shelter for a family during a long winter.
Locals sometimes protected their mail boxes by installing them inside
covered bridges.
Each county in Oregon adopted a specic covered bridge design.
Oregon has the most covered bridges of any state west of the Mississippi.
The roofs and sides of covered bridges were not for beauty,
but to protect the large wooden trusses.
Oregon was the rst state to legislate covered bridge
rehabilitation and maintenance.
Covered bridges were used as mileposts on early maps and
tour guides.
National corporations, such as McDonalds and Sears, have used
the Hannah Bridge, just north of Scio, in television commercials.
Ripleys Believe It or Notonce featured the Larwood Bridge, justeast of Crabtree on Hwy. 20, stating that it is the only spot in the U.S.
where a river ows into a creek. This is where the Roaring River empties
into the Crabtree Creek.
The rst covered bridges were toll bridges. Typical toll charges were:
Wagon with oxen or horses 25 cents; Horse and carriage 18 cents;
Single footman 5 cents; Horses and cattle 3 cents per head.
One previous Oregon covered bridge hosted a one-holer toilet to
serve sherman and others along Thomas Creek.
TheSeattle Times published an article about Oregons Covered
Bridges which generated 500 telephone calls to the Albany Visitors
Association in just one week!
