Middle School Students Showcase Their Artistry to the Community LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP EDUCATION FOUNDATION YEAR-END 2015 Spring was in the air when Lawrence Middle School (LMS) threw open its doors for the 2nd annual Performing Arts Festival, a showcase for student talent ranging from visual to performing and fine arts. “This program allows the entire school commu- nity a chance to explore their creative side and be inspired to explore other areas of the arts,” says Jennifer Skorupa, art teacher at LMS. "It’s a great opportunity for our students to showcase their many talents in the areas of visual art, media, technology, music, theater and literature. We are so thankful for the funding from LTEF.“ The Arts Festival took place in May and while it was a one-day event, its impact will influence LMS students for years to come. The Concert Band and Orchestra hosted guest artists Michael Pratt and Jerry Rife to work with the young musicians on music technique and the compositions they performed in the Spring Concert. The Fine Arts Department hosted an exhibition of student art work and invited guest artist Bruce Middleton to guide students to create a perma- nent visual art display that will serve as a lasting reminder of the excitement of the festival. The Arts Festival included a broad range of opportunities for all students to demonstrate their creativity. The program included projects in film and video, robotics, 3D printing, acting, dance and spoken word/poetry competitions. The Performing Arts Festival achieved its goal to engage and excite as many students as possible through creativity and multi-media expression. The outcome was a rich array of student-created art, and an energizing experience for all involved. LTEF is able to support programs like the Performing Arts Festival through the generous support of donors like you. We hope that you will continue to support this and similar programs in the Lawrence Public Schools by donating to LTEF online (www.LTEFNJ.org), by check or by payroll deduction. STEAMing INTO KINDERGARTEN WITH BEE-BOT ROBOTSIt’s an exciting time to be in kindergarten! Lawrence Township kindergartners have an opportunity to learn with the Bee-Bot robotics system, enhancing the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) curriculum by supporting problem-solving, estimating, sequencing, planning, counting and learning directions. Bee-Bots support student collaboration and authentic learning using a fun and high tech approach. Research reports show that the integration of robotics in kindergarten “incorporates math and

literacy concepts while engaging kindergartners in the arts.” Listen for the Bees’ buzzzzz in our school halls.

DRUMMING UP THE EXCITEMENTThe District’s music education program is one of the top 100 in the nation, thanks in part to LTEF funding for instruments. Students at Lawrence Middle School now have the opportunity to play tubanos, djembes, talking drums, bongos, Señor Kelly shakers, guiros, claves, maracas, gongokui and more, now that learning percussion techniques from countries around the world is a part of the school’s general music curriculum. Be sure to attend concerts in our schools and support their love of music.

CONNECTING LEARNING WITH OUTDOORS AND NATUREStudents at Eldridge Park Elementary School now enjoy a natural outdoor learning environment, funded by LTEF. The new FALCON (Forever A Learner, Connecting with Outdoors and Nature) space includes picnic tables, a portable whiteboard, an art easel, and a place to store supplies. Allowing students to explore nature enhances their cognitive thinking, fosters collaboration, and gives our teachers the ability to use a kinesthetic and technical approach to lessons. The FALCON environment provides opportunities for students to explore their natural environment and learn from their surroundings.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE OMYoga has been shown to reduce anxiety and increase the ability to maintain focus, in addition to building flexibility. Now Lawrence Intermediate School students and after school yoga club members have yoga mats to practice their skills. LTEF invests in the whole student, partnering with Lawrence Township’s public schools to develop the mind-body connection.

KINESTHETIC CLASSROOMSpecial education students at Lawrence Middle School have new opportunities to succeed in the kinesthetic classroom. Their tables have bicycle pedals to allow them to move while seated, while their new motion desks have stools and a swinging bar for their feet. Students use movement to facilitate thoughts, remain on task and ultimately attain a greater level of achievement. It’s another example of LTEF’s commitment to working with teachers to provide innovative solutions to today’s challenges.

literacy concepts while engaging kindergartners in the arts.” Listen for the Bees’ buzzzzz in our school halls.

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP EDUCATION FOUNDATION YEAR-END 2015

Spring was in the air when Lawrence Middle School (LMS) threw open its doors for the 2nd annual Performing Arts Festival, a showcase for student talent ranging from visual to performing and fine arts.

“This program allows the entire school commu-nity a chance to explore their creative side and be inspired to explore other areas of the arts,” says Jennifer Skorupa, art teacher at LMS. "It’s a great opportunity for our students to showcase their many talents in the areas of visual art, media, technology, music, theater and literature. We are so thankful for the funding from LTEF.“

The Arts Festival took place in May and while it was a one-day event, its impact will influence LMS students for years to come. The Concert Band and Orchestra hosted guest artists Michael Pratt and Jerry Rife to work with the young musicians on music technique and the compositions they performed in the Spring Concert. The Fine Arts Department hosted an exhibition of student art work and invited guest artist Bruce Middleton to guide students to create a perma-nent visual art display that will serve as a lasting reminder of the excitement of the festival.

LTEF is able to support programs like the Performing

Arts Festival through the generous support of donors like you.

We hope that you will continue to support this and similar programs in the Lawrence Public Schools by donating to LTEF online (www.LTEFNJ.org), by check or by payroll deduction. With your help, LTEF will be able to continue to fund excellence, achievement and strong character in our schools.
