New RM Bridge V8i v08.11.18.01 Maintenance Release
RM Bridge V8i v08.11.18.01 is a maintenance release for the RM Bridge V8i v08.11.11.xx
release series.
It fixes reported common problems and adds new functionality. See next pages.
About the RM Bridge V8i v08.11 consolidated product line
The RM Bridge V8i v08.11 product line is the latest major release of the renowned and widely
used software suite RM Bridge V8i.
The software performs analysis and design of arbitrary bridge structures ranging from small
standard bridges to world record cable stayed and suspension bridges.
The new product line contains three main products:
RM Bridge: RM Bridge Standard product
RM Bridge Advanced: RM Bridge Advanced product and optionally 5 additional modules
RM Bridge Advanced Non-Linear
RM Bridge Advanced Dynamics
RM Bridge Advanced Construction
RM Bridge Advanced Wind
RM Bridge Advanced Cable
RM Bridge Cast: RM Precast Segmental
All 3 main products are available on the SELECT Server as one download package RM Bridge
Advanced+ V8i.

Graphical User Interface
- New look of the already known Recalc window. This pad has been completely reorganized in
the new version of the program. It is more user-friendly and separated into several logical
parts.

traffic loads on 3D model in Analyzer has been added
to already existing View Options window in addition
to many existing possibilities.

A new window for graphical adjustments has been added (character size, point size, colours and many
other things) in order to provide a clear and better preview of important points.
A more detailed preview of Reference sets in Properties/Cross Sections is now offered.
The Temperature diagram
definition has been improved and
users have now a much better over-
view using 2D or isometric view.
It is now also possible to plot
graphic directly from this window.
The window for 2D preview of tendon position has been improved.
Dimension lines are now available for each position of tendon, one or more tendons can be visible at the
same time and it is also possible to plot in this window.

Modeler: Some technical improvements have been implemented in the Modeler.
Boundaries - In the previous release of RM Bridge we
had implemented an automatic generation of the cross-
section FE mesh. Various types of boundaries were
implemented in order to perform this task. The
definition of these boundaries was line-wise, i.e.
bound to construction lines. The new release offers a
new possibility: point-wise boundary definition with
drawing of boundaries using cross-section points,
which allows faster and more elegant boundary
creation. However, both approaches may be used, so
the users can decide which way is more comfortable
for them.
In order to follow the new development of FEM
Module Shell Element drawing options were added to
the existing icon for element drawing.
Technical Improvements – FEM Module
A new approach has been implemented in the latest RM Bridge version. New, friendlier, easier and faster
generation of the FEM-Shell mesh is now available in the Modeler - independent of the normal cross-
section FE Mesh used for beam analysis.
Auto-generation of FE parts (nodes) - Automatic subdivision of wide shell elements which allows
generation of more complex Cross Sections like T-sections, hollow boxes, etc.
New concept of load application:

2. Nonlinear temperature distribution
An important extension is also the
new possibility of considering
arbitrary temperature distributions
over the cross-sections. This
extension now allows for point-wise
definition of several gradients (for
instance along the boundaries or
characteristic cuts through the cross-
section).
3. Traffic loading
We implemented extensions for standard definition of traffic lanes to a band of fictitious lanes
arranged along relevant point of the cross-section. The collective of these influence lines forms
an influence surface which allows for evaluating values for loads arbitrarily placed on structure.
In order to consider the transverse
distribution of the lane loads and truck
loads we have provided an extension to
the definition of load trains which
allows for considering a surface load
rather than a line load, or wheel loads
rather than axle loads.

Results presentation of FEM Analysis on Shell element level
New FEM results presentation is now also available.
The GUI allows for effectively
tracking all shell element results. We
can switch between stresses,
displacements and forces. In the
bottom list we can select the
structural element to be presented and
in graphics window we see
immediately the distribution.

Technical Enhancements and Localizations
New spring types:
Maxwell Damper - new type of the
viscous damper element. It consists of a
linear spring and a viscous damper
arranged in series and it is used for
dynamic time history analysis.
Friction Pendulum System (FPS) is a damping device widely used for
optimizing bridge performance during earthquake events. Behavior of
FPS is governed by a large amount of parameters defined by the provider
of these devices.
Shear Check Improvements:
- Implemented Shear check for Euro Code 1992, national appendix for Germany.
- Vrd,max – maximal allowable shear force.
Available for all design codes in GUI under
Structure/Elements/Checks and also in detailed list file. It
can be defined as a result in RM Set.
Crack Check Improvement:
- Information about crack width is now
available in the GUI under Structure/Elements/Checks
and in detailed list file. In RM Set this information can
be used to present this value as a result.

A new option Consider Resal Effect has been added to the
Shear capacity Check in Elements Checks. The shear
capacity check can now be performed with taking into
account a reduction or increase of the effective shear force
due to flange inclination of tapered beams.
In the new version of RM Bridge it is now
possible to perform a Load rating
procedure, which measures the maximum
allowable live load that can be safely placed
on a bridge. This is performed with the new
Schedule Action RateF. Through a series of
equations for flexural bending, longitudinal
stresses, principal stresses, shear and other
demands RM Bridge provides calculated
rating factors.
Australian Super-T beams sections (open or closed top) have been added to the Modeller Cross Section
Catalogue. Users have the possibility to use this type of cross section independent from the Wizard.
