Sad news reaches us this week that Lara Stone is to serve divorcepapers on David Walliams. The Little Britain star is said to bethrowing himself into work in an effort to cope with the strain ofseparation and is currently in discussions with the BBC to turn two of

his bestselling children’s books into TV gold for our viewing pleasure thiscoming Christmas, and for the 2016 festive season.

If you loved Gangsta Granny (which starred Miranda Hart and RobbieWilliams) and The Boy in the Dress (where we glimpsed Kate Moss onscreen) you’ll be delighted to hear that Walliams’ Billionaire Boy will screenthis year, with Awful Auntie hitting screens next. Commenting on his TVadaptations, the Britain’s Got Talent judge said; "It's great seeing them onscreen because you feel like a magician – something in your head becomesthis real, physical thing … I don't know who's going to be in Billionaire Boyyet but there are a few good parts. And I'm sure I will pop up somewhere."

Meanwhile, nextdoor, DavidWalliams’neighbour, multi-

platinum selling andGrammy / Oscar / BRIT/everything winner Adelehas had some good news. Her 2011 album, 21, hasbeen named as thebestselling UK album of themillennium. 21 hit the topspot in over 30 countries, selling over 11 million copiesworldwide and almost fivemillion in the UK.

Anyone who sees me onFacebook will no doubthave seen that I have anew profile pic. Well not

new exactly new but rather old, atleast 35 years old. I received arequest from an old friend, someone who I had not seen foryears and years, and after chattingfor a while he said that he had apicture of me from back then andthat he would send it. I wasfascinated as back then we did nothave digital cameras and certainlynot phones with cameras built in.A photograph back then tookeffort, it took work and unliketoday, where we snap away likeloons, a photograph wassomething special.

After a short while the picturearrived and to say that it wasspecial would be seriously

understating the facts. I thought itmight have been a snapshot, meat a party or at a launch eventfrom my book publishing days. Farfrom it, this was a studio shot thathad taken time to do, a time that Iremember well.

The friend said that he wasembarrassed at not being able toremember the name of thephotographer who had given himthe picture. It took me a fewmoments’ reflection to place it butI knew it would come to me andafter a few minutes it did. Thepicture was taken by my friendTony, and sadly Tony was taken byAIDS, many years back when therewas no medication that wouldkeep him alive.

Tony was a fun friend, ahairdresser by day and a verygood photographer in his sparetime. I remember his poignantportraits of his mother, imagesthat captured a sadness as well asa serenity. I'm not sure that theseare qualities that he captured inme.

What he did capture though wasa mood of the time – and the factthat I was a lot thinner back then.

We did the pictures at his homein Brixton and he asked me to

You may not realise it, but there areall sorts of interesting and unusualplaces to visit on the Brighton &Hove bus network – stretching out

to Eastbourne, the South Downs, andSteyning to name but a few.

This week: Devil’s Dyke. There are so many unique things to see

and do at Devil’s Dyke. This location is oneof the most iconic landmarks in the SouthEast, holding the distinction of being thelongest ‘dry’ valley in the UK. Be it onsunny days or foggy evenings, it has manyspectacular panoramas to show to itsvisitors.

Aside from the amazing views of the South Downs, Devil’s Dyke alsocontains ruined ramparts of an Iron Age hill fort and the remains of aVictorian funfair. And on the right day, you might see some adventuroushang-gliders float through the sky above the valley (or perhaps you mightjoin them yourself!).

The South Downs Way passesnearby, so for those walkers outthere it could be just the start ofan adventurous day out rambling.

There is an excellent pub rightby the Dyke, and Brighton & HoveBuses service 77 drops you off atthe car park next to the pub.

Between mid-June and August, the bus is an open top doubledecker to give you un-parallelledpanoramic views on your way tothe Dyke.

Getting to Devil’sDyke: Route 77, ‘Breezeup to the Downs’, runson Saturdays, Sundaysand Public Holidays asoften as hourly. From 19April the service will runevery day, and from mid-June to August it willalso run every 30minutes.Full timetable availableat buses.co.uk/77We have a range of tickets for day travel, from individual tickets to familytickets – visit buses.co.uk to find out moreFor all the information on Devil’s Dyke, visit the National Trust’s website:www.nationaltrust.org.uk.

Brighton & Hove buses share their top busroute destinations ...

In 1803 Dalton announced his “atomictheory”, that atoms are the buildingblocks of matter. However, like mostnew theories, it received a luke warm

reception. It would take the scientificcommunity 100 years to embrace theconcept of atoms.

Robert Brown, in 1827, observed via amicroscope that pollen grains when placedin a liquid darted about, and this wastermed Brownian motion. In 1905 Einsteindeveloped a mathematical formula (knownas the ‘random walk’) to predict Brownianmotion. He explained that as small

particles (such as pollen grains) moved about in a liquid, they are beingpushed about by much smalleratoms in everydirection. Einstein’s predictionswere then verified in experimentalwork carried out by Perrin in 1908and the atomic theory was finallyuniversally accepted.

School children are expected tounderstand the concept of theatomic theory within a few wellplanned out lessons, andregurgitate what they have learntat the end of each lesson. If they

haven’t grasped the concepts then quite frankly it’s tough, since there isan exam syllabus to get through. These children will basically be driventhrough the drill of passing exam questions by rote learning becausethere simply isn’t time. And this is why I am all for the ‘slow education’movement (sloweducation.co.uk).

I worked in the thick of the business, target-driven culture of the ‘90sand completely signed up to efficient, effective, target-driven policies. However, this culture has spread into education, where it most definitelydoes not belong. A generation of school children have been reduced to aset of numbers and data representing a production line. STEM (science, technology, engineering andmaths) is not target-driven; it isproject based and puts thechild’s learning and naturalcuriosity for the world aroundthem, centre stage. It was greatto be able to share our STEMideas and successes with thenext cohort of science teachersfrom the University of Sussex, recently. Wishing them loads ofluck!

LOVING THE CLASSICS

Ihave always been a little old fashioned, even from an early age –when I chose to wear smocks and petticoats over jeans. I still don'town a single pair of trousers, as sacrilegious as that might sound! My clothes always have a vintage twist, my hair is set with rollers,

my furniture is antique and I've never quite managed to wrap mymind around double glazing (people don't like drafty old houses?!).

My favourite 'old' thing is that subset of cinema regarded as 'classic'.Five years ago, whilst studying the history of cinema, I started aYouTube blog called 'The Classical Review' where I review old films andinvite my audience to suggest films they consider to be 'classics'. Todaythe blog is part of Latest TV's film review show, PostFeature, which Ipresent with Joseph Gunn. Each week I look at a classic film that tiesto the newly released feature film we review in the main part of theshow. For this week's episode, I review Fahrenheit 451 from 1966; set ina dystopian future, it is based on Ray Bradbury's novel and directed byFrench master of cinema, Francois Truffaut.

Protagonist Guy Montag is a firefighter living in a lonely, isolatedsociety where books have been outlawed by a government afraid of anindependent-thinking public. Thejob of a ‘Firefighter’ is to find andburn on sight all books, aided bycivilian 'informants'. People aredrugged into complacency, completely illiterate and gettingtheir information from wall-lengthtelevision screens. The film'sopening credits are spoken ratherthan displayed in type, thedirector's hint of what life would belike in an illiterate culture. Yet, afterfalling in love with book-hoarding Clarisse and beginning to readconfiscated books, Montag begins to question the government'smotives behind book-burning.

It's a wonderful film but Truffaut wasn’t happy with it, and hisremarks about the film are responsible for it’s low reputation. It washis white whale; taking four years to put the production together. Theshoot in England proved difficult for Truffaut – in part because hespoke no English (helpful!) but largely because working with his leadactor, Oskar Werner, was near impossible.

Rather than keeping their conflicts out of the press, Truffaut decidedto break the story himself, publishing excepts of his diary. The accounttold of a difficult and unpleasant experience filming with Werner, including Truffaut’s shock when his actor arrived on set one day withan entirely new haircut!

To find out more about the film, watch PostFeature on Wednesday at6.30pm or check the listings for repeats. Classical reviews are alsouploaded to my YouTube channel.

under 16 (where appropriate) it’s only £3.50.Literally, comedy names off the telly for lessthan a pint, and you can even buy yourself apint while you’re there because they’ve gottheir own bar.

Still think I’m blowing hot air? Then checkout this list of esteemed comics runningthrough their new shows and sharing a billfor pennies. We have (deep breath) AngelaBarnes and respected podcaster and comicStuart Goldsmith on Tuesday 21 April, JoeLycett and Pippa Evans performing onWednesday 22 April, Romesh Ranganathanand Ivo Graham on Tuesday 14 April, JulianDeane and Alex Smith on Wednesday 15April, plus Gareth Richards and Steve Hall onWednesday 8 April.

These are all works in progress, butthey’re good enough for these hugelysuccessful and acclaimed comedians to beprepared to take them out and put theirnames to these shows in a public arena.

That’s their livlihoods. And, I re-iterate, allfor the cost of a pint to you. If you can’tsupport live comedy with all this going foryou, you might just want to face the fact thatit’s not the cost of a ticket that’s stoppingyou going out.www.otherplacebrighton.co.uk

Some people decide that they’re notgoing to go out and see live comedybecause they think a ticket pricemight be too expensive. It’s not. And

I know this because of the number of showsthat come up that are simply too good to be

believed at twice the price. Case in point would be the current run

currently on sale under the banner of ‘OnePint Comedy’ at Otherplace @ TheBasement at the moment – with two entireshow previews from professional comediansfor only £4.50 the pair in one evening. And ifyou’re a student, senior, on Job SeekersAllowance, NHS staff, an Equity member or

As frontman for Dizraeli &The Small Gods, whonow feature FemaleBeatbox Champion

Bellatrix, Dizraeli set up theband in order to tour his debutsolo album, Engurland (SeasideShanties), in 2009.

Nestled alongside variousother projects Dizraeli isinvolved with, The Small Godsreleased the Moving In The Darkalbum in 2013 and have anextensive summer and autumnof activity lined up, including aUK tour, and the release of twoEPs.

Bristol raised, he moved toBrighton to go to universitywhere he did English Literatureand French, whilst continuinghis passion for DJing, rapping, and music in general. "TheBrighton scene then waswicked; we had a strongcollective of bands, all at asimilar kind of level: theResonators, King Porter Stomp,Samsara, and Bad Science, which was my band. We used topool our resources together, put on nights (such as the

infamousComm:Unitynights), do aradio show onRadio Reverb, there was areally strongsense ofmusicalcommunity. I really hope that stillexists in Brighton."

As a rapper and lyricist, Dizraeliis one of the very best. And it'sabout as far away from GangstaRap as you could get; intelligent, witty and satirical, there's a strongleaning towards social justicewithin his work. "The first rap Iever wrote was about thegreenhouse effect, the ozone layerspecifically. My dad was anenvironmental activist, and when Iwas growing up I used to go to to alot of demonstrations, reclaim thestreets rallies, things like that. Iremember my first rap because Ifound my Dennis The Menacenotebook, when I was nine yearsold, just the other day… 'If youwant to be a rocking' and a rollin'you got take care of the ozone/youdon't' treat the earth like acompost pit, you do that man, getout of it.'

"Will Smith, believe it or not, when he was the Fresh Prince withJazzy Jeff, was big for me. I guesslike any kid I wanted to be cool. Ialways loved poetry from a reallyyoung age, I hoovered up books.

Rap just seems to be an extensionof that storytelling.

He became so good at it that hewon the inaugural BBC Radio FourSlam Poetry Award in 2007. Wheredid the name Dizraeli come from?"I was flicking through a historybook, looking for a name to callmyself when I was 15, saw theword Dizraeli and chose it, and itstuck. 17 years later! It hasbecome me." Benjamin Disraeli(with an 's' and not a 'z')is perhapsone of the most famous PrimeMinisters in British history, and isbest known as the father of themodern Conservative Party. "Mostpeople don't know that," saysDizraeli of his (almost) namesake."You'd be surprised… and I'mkind of glad for that, because it'snothing to do with me at all. Hewas a tory, an imperialist…"

For this gig, under the nameGhost Lights, Dizraeli will beperforming solo as well as livecollaborations with Bellatrix,Reeps One and Rex Domino. The Old Market, Tues 14 April,8.30pm, £12

What a joy to see a show for thefifth time and still find it asentertaining as the first. Themusical reworking of the Python’sHoly Grail is a masterpiece ofcomedic musical theatre. Thehumour is true to the original, thesongs wonderfully spoofBroadway genres and theattention to detail, where theshow is playing and timelyreferences, keep it fresh. Youseldom see a show where the castseem to be having as much fun asthe audience (without resenting it)and this time round the cast ofyoung performers is as strong asever. Joe Pasquale makes the roleof King Arthur his very own, asaucy performance that makesyou forget that his singing voice isa little weak. Once again ToddCarty steals the show with acomedy performance that displaysa fine sense of pathos and superbcomedy timing, he can sing too,and his vocal in ‘I’m All Alone’ isnot only funny but rather moving. Icould go again tonight, andtomorrow, and …

John Bishop – SupersonicJohn Bishop is blown away by hislife, and he wants you to know it.It’s been such a change, and hemines it for the fun and theridiculous, from being upgradedwith Air Emirates, to hod-carrying

in Africa. However, his is still ‘Dadcomedy’. By that I mean that thedodgy foreign accents and sexistgeneralisations are never far away. That said, he has a bagful of niftyturns of phrase well and producesa pleasant evening’s worth ofstand-up. He’s a good club comic, but with more smiles and chucklesthan uproarious laughter.Brighton Centre, 31 March 2015★★★★★ Victoria Nangle

Sam LeeBritish folk song collector Sam Leeis the 21st century version of AlanLomax and Cecil Sharp, and was intown to promote new album ‘TheFade In Time’, comprised ofancient traveller songs. Eachnumber came with its own historylesson as Sam detailed the regionit originated from and the personthat taught it to him. From CornishGipsy ballads to Aberdoniancampfire songs, he has savedthese hand-me-downs fromextinction and given them amodern polish while retainingtheir roots. Tributes were paid tolocal singers, and the mesmerisingperformance ended with astunning acapella encore.Corn Exchange, Brighton Dome, 28March 2015★★★★★ Steve Clements

Courtney BarnettWith a universally praised albumand a packed house for her tour’sopening night, the Aussie indiestar didn’t disappoint. Her set wasa mix of uptempo grungeypsychedelia and laid back ’70sslacker grooves that werecomplimented by the ever-changing animated backdrop, only‘Small Poppies’ changing the pacewith its bluesy Siouxsie sound. Herbrief chats were playful as sheteased the audience with ‘guessthe intro’ that became ‘AvantGardener’ which kept the moshpitmoving; the narrative lyricsperfectly suited to her talkingsinging style. The hour endedabruptly with a pounding‘Pedestrian At Best’, which shemost definitely wasn’t.Concorde 2, 27 March 2015★★★★★ Steve Clements
