LOVED UP

Cerianne and Billy first metat the tender age of

seven. Back then they spenttheir days making clay NinjaTurtles and played ina treehouse at thebottom of Billy’sNan’s garden. Hehad a crush on hereven then, but whenhe declared hisfeelings, in truesevenyearold styleshe ran away! Sadly Ceri’sfamily left the area and didn’treturn for many years, sherevealed: “I found Billy again

on Facebook and asked if heremembered me and theNinja Turtles. We arranged tomeet up (which I was very

excited about), in the Old OakPub, in Kemp Town. Hewalked in wearing work gear, with wood chip in his hair and

covered in dust.”This time she didn’t run

away and the couple quicklyfell in love. They bought ahouse together and havethree beautiful daughters. Thebest part of the love story isthat their daughters now play

in the same treehouse at thebottom of Billy’s Nan’sgarden. Ceri couldn’t behappier: “Billy works so hardto give me and the girls thevery best. I'm so lucky.” Tell us who you love, win fizz!Twitter: @LatestBrighton

ONLY IN BRIGHTON

My little sister asked me, the other day, how I had got to aplace where I was happy living on my own. This is not to

say that I presented myself as the allknowing Yoda of solosurvival, but I have been quite gleefully vocal with her abouthow much fun it is to sing a song about dinner, whilst cookingthe very same dinner. Sausages lend themselves to a lot ofBeatles tunes – just saying. Anyway, I went away and gave it a thunk.

A week later and we were talking on the phone and I toldher my conclusions. Chiefly, I pontificated, it’s down tocommunity. She lives in London and I’m in Brighton and assuch I am ideally located to be able to pop out almost anytimeat all and find something to do and probably someone to do itwith. I have cinema friends that can separate by film genre. Aswathe of pals to revel in watching comedy, music or justsimply the sea with – so that when I go home and close thedoor it’s a simple luxury that I love every time.

Alone without being lonely. It’s a knack. And one I can thankthis city for serving up to me.

OF MICE AND MEN

Set in America during theGreat Depression, this

classic play tells the story ofGeorge and Lennie, twomigrant farm workers who goin search of new beginnings,in the hope of attaining theirshared dream: of puttingtogether enough money tobuy a small piece of land andbuilding a home.

After a long and exhaustingjourney, the pair arrive at afarm in California where theyseek work. But they are nostrangers to trouble and soonfind themselves reeling fromthe fall out of an innocentmisunderstanding whichspirals out of control andleaves the two men, bound

together byfriendship, facing anearth shatteringclimax.

The cast includesDudley Sutton(Lovejoy,Entertaining MrSloane, AWhistle in theDark) as Candy.Asked aboutthe relevanceof the play formodernaudiences, Dudleycommented: “It has so manyextraordinary resonances. It’sabout the haves and havenots and the suppression ofthe people by the big

agriculturecompanies.

“This play is set in the late‘20s and there were unionstrikes that had to be brokenup with shotguns. You gotWoody Guthrie and all those

great protest songs that cameout of that time. It’s asrelevant today as it ever was. It’s an intensely moral play inthe best sense of the word”.Of Mice and Men, TheatreRoyal Brighton, Tues 19 – Sat23 Aprilwww.atgtickets.com/brighton0844 871 7650

So this is what you have all been waiting for. The answer tothe critical question that I had been wondering for years

after watching Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake – how do youget from being mates to spending the night? Well it started offthe same way as most flings do. I got laryngitis from kissinghim at a gaybar. A week later when all my colleagues figuredout our connection and I’d finished all the ice cream we thenstarted to hang out as friends while he sorted out hisrelationship or didn’t.

I would just chill at his, watch movies and occasionally go tothe pub like you would do with any of your friends. That wasuntil one Friday night when it all changed. That night we joinedthe rest of thecrew at thelocal drinkinghole for theweekly catchup. Peytonand I couldn’t really afford the Brighton beer prices – which isnot completely unheard of. When I went to get a free beer I’dgrabbed a coupon for, he said: “I can’t really stay out muchlonger, do you wanna head to mine? I have a bottle of vodkaand we could get some mixer.” Feeling the pinch myself itwasn’t too hard to convince me to leave after I had downedmy pint. I said my goodbyes and left.

Halfway to his I checked my phone and read a text that said:“Don’t forget to use protection.” Taking that as some weirdjoke I shrugged it off. But after two films and half a bottle ofbooze, I couldn’t believe my friend saw it coming and I had noclue.

I mean, it’s not like me to just ditch my friends for a guy. Most of my friends are guys and I’m usually the embarrassingone still on the dancefloor. Either I’m growing up or I amclearly more attracted to Peyton than I thought. Then again Istill freaked out in the morning when I remembered what hadhappened.

Watchers of Latest TV, (and if you're not one then whynot?) will have seen that I have started presenting a

new property show called Latest Homes Live ‘I Want To LiveHere!’ which airs every Tuesday at 1pm and then is repeatedthroughout the week.

It may seem a long way from my usual stuff, you know, food, theatre, opera, behaving badly… I jest. The truth is that for thelast 15 years I havewritten a hugeamount of articlesand features forLatest Homes. Iwouldn't ever claimto be a property expert, but I do have a wealth of knowledgeand I have always expressed my opinions about Brighton &Hove's property scene.

My opinions on the whole have been positive andenthusiastic – as the show says, "I want to live here" and Ireally do. I like the city for all its diverse qualities. I like thesophistication and I like its saucy reputation. I like the historyand I like its modernity too, there is so much to love about thisplace that I cannot imagine living anywhere else, well maybe ifpushed I could live in Vancouver or Sydney, but that's not likelyto happen.

The one thing that does sadden me about the city though isits unwillingness, in certain quarters, to embrace change. Andnothing divides the city more than the subject of newdevelopment. How sad it is that when someone proposes anexciting new development like the Frank Gehry replacement ofthe outdated King Alfred, the naysayers come out in force andit is squashed before it even leaves the drawing board.

Now people are complaining about the British Airways i360.It's strikingly modern and technologically exciting and it hasdriven the regeneration of a huge swathe of our seafront. It'shere and I love it. I say that the yeasayers need to raise therevoices too and that we all need to embrace change.

It is very rare that I have a Saturday night off, but on Saturday3rd of April it was one of those rare nights. As luck would

have it, my friend Hazel O'Connor was going to be in Brightondoing a show at The Old Market. Many of you will rememberHazel O'Connor from the ‘80s. Hazel and I have been friendsfor many years and I managed to ask her a few questions.

Have you ever played at the Old Market before? No I haven't. I am very excited to be playing there tonight. Ilove the promoters. It’s 'An Evening with Hazel O'Connor' but Ishare the stage with ClareHurst on sax, (Bellestars andBowie) and Sarah Fisher onkeyboards. (Eurythmics).

How long have you beentouring together for? It’s seven, nearly eight years.I always wanted to do something Jazzy with the girls and I wasalways putting it off, then my Mum got diagnosed withterminal cancer and I realised you can’t put things off. Youhave to seize the day, 'carpe diem' or it will be too late and so Irang the girls and we started work'.

What’s your favourite memory of gigging in Brighton? It was about 16 years ago at the Komedia when I did the'Beyond Breaking Glass' tour with Cormac De Barra. HerbyFlowers had told Marina (who started the Komedia) to give usa chance and she did. It was a great night!

What’s next for you?I am filming next week for a movie, it’s called 'Hound'. Toyahand Gary Shail are in it too! I'm always amazed when I hear people brandBrighton and Hove as a city of vegetarians. I

have lived here 30 years now and have failedto see the place as nut roast central. Far from itin fact, and especially now with the rise ofexciting chefs championing local and seasonalproduce.

That said the city does boast a fewrestaurants that create astonishingly good foodthat just happens to be vegetarian and somewho, whilst not being solelyvegetarian, create meat andfish and even dairy free dishesthat would thrill the strictestveggies and vegans. I think youwill know them so I will notnamecheck them this week asI want to talk about a newvegetarian venue in town.

Open only a few months,1847 is an interesting placethat has taken over a verysmart venue in Church Roadthat has had a chequered past. By which Imean that as an eatery it has repeatedly failed.Oh there have been a few exceptions but theyhave been short lived – so let's hope that thistime they have got the concept and thecooking right.

I went for lunch with Mrs G de V and Mr M,two of my food cohorts one of whom is apretty strict vegetarian and the other a manwho does not like to be overfaced by meat. I'man omnivore, I eat pretty much anything forexcept for pineapple.

Mr M started with a mushroom pate whichhe really enjoyed. I have to say it looked very

good and the presentation throughout wasvery nice indeed. Mrs G de V had a pumpkinand kale salad that looked equally good andwas declared very tasty with huge amounts ofsoft cheese that I envied. My scotch egg starterwas okay, it looked great, the egg wasimpressively runny but the barley outer partwas a big dry and the barley risotto beneathwas pretty much the same, in fact I think it wasthe same.

I was far more impressedby my main of fried halloumiwith a delicious lemon curddressing and basil infusedpeas. The portion was justright, the dressing a goodbalance of bitter and sharpand the peas were inspired, far better than peas withmint. The chips, three timescooked were okay, a littlesoggy and disappointing so Ileft them pretty much

untouched. Mrs G de V chose the beetrootbourguignon, an earthy take on a classic beefdish that looked excellent and put a big smileon her face. Mr M had a second starter ofpakora and loved them, I looked on with envy. But then so did he when Mrs G de V and Itucked into a delicious deconstructed chestnutpie, we both loved that.

Early days for the newest branch of this smallnational chain, plenty of promise and good tosee a new vegetarian choice for the city.1847, North Road, Brighton, BN1 1YW01273 677776www.By1847.com

Chichester Festival Theatre remains at theforefront of British musical theatre with

another four prestigious Olivier awards, thistime for their stunning revival of Gypsy whichwent on to the West End to further acclaimafter its stunning festival season. It is a patternthat repeats year on year and CFT are nowseen as one of thepremier producinghouses in this field.

This season willsee a new musicalbased on TravelsWith My Aunt, thenovel by GrahamGreene. Retiredbank manager Henry Pulling is happy alone withhis dahlias until he meets his decidedlybohemian Aunt Augusta who, having rattled thefamily skeletons, persuades the reluctant Henryto flee to Europe.

Based on Graham Greene’s celebrated novel, this new musical was adapted by Emmy Awardwinning writers Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipmanand features a score by the Olivier Awardwinning team of George Stiles and AnthonyDrewe, all of whom previously collaborated onthe musical Betty Blue Eyes.

Patricia Hodge plays Aunt Augusta. Her longassociation with Chichester encompasses TheMitford Girls, As You Like It and Calendar Girls;her recent television credits include several

series’ of Miranda. Steven Pacey plays Henry; hisprevious Chichester appearances include Kent inKing Lear; and in the West End, By Jeeves, TheAdmirable Crichton and Phantom of the Opera.

They will also be reviving Half A Sixpence, themusical adaptation of H.G. Wells’s novel Kipps:The Story of a Simple Soul. It is a completelyfresh adaptation which reunites bookwriterJulian Fellowes (Oscarwinning screenwriter andcreator of Downton Abbey) with George Stilesand Anthony Drewe, the musical team that cocreator Cameron Mackintosh first put togetherto create the hit stage adaptation of MaryPoppins with Disney. The plot (as silly andwhimsical as a Jackie

But it was Janet Dibleywho stood out, bringingmuch needed balance to ashow full of camp sillinessand making the story standout as one worth watching. She can sing too but sheadmirably acted the song, even when the lyrics weretrite or silly she gave them adramatic sense

Not that it's a deadcert, of course, that theywon't ever reform in thefuture and cash in; but fornow, this is the end of theroad for the much lovedBellowhead, an 11piece thatmix traditional dance tunes, with folk songs and shanties. Not a commercial proposition Ihear you say, but Bellowhead have become one of the biggestfolk acts of recent times, the secret largely lying in theirenergetic live shows which involves a great deal ofinstrumentation and instrument swapping.

Conceived by Jon Boden and John Spiers in 2004 whilstsitting in a traffic jam, Bellowhead's 'English world music' tookalmost everyone by surprise, their third album ‘Hedonism’ thehighest selling independent folk album ever released. And aswell as being commissioned for the likes of both The Simpsonsand The Archers, they've been heavily involved in creatingtheir own Bellowhead ales, and signing to the iconic Islandlabel for their sixth and last album, ‘Revival’, which was theirhighest album chart placing yet (number 12).

But, to go out at the top and on a high is both a brave andbrilliant thing to do. Unsurprisingly, it's difficult to keep such abeast on the road, and with the various band members allhaving their own projects, it’s been remarkable that they havemanaged to stay together so long, with only two membersleaving the band in all their time together. But with foundingmember Jon Boden deciding to disband the band, I'm surethere will be many a glass raised during this final tour.Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Mon 18 April, SOLD OUT

MUSICJEFF HEMMINGS

Two wildly different but equally stunning musical optionscome to town this week. Andy Stott is at Patterns on

Wednesday night, playing his murky, beatdriven palette ofelectronic sound live.

Stott is touring before therelease of his new album 'TooMany Voices', which is out on22nd April (album art above).2014's Faith in Strangers was afantastic record that wentfrom funereal drones todrum’n’bass blasts and AphexTwin type keyboards. You can stream new track 'Butterflies' onYouTube now which is a sparse joy to listen to, and the newalbum is heralded as sounding as ethereal as This Mortal Coiland Dead Can Dance so we should be in similar sonic territoryto his masterful earlier work.

Saturday night sees the candonowronginmybookLondon Philharmonic Orchestra playing at the Dome's ConcertHall. BBC Music magazine cover star Miloš Karadaglić hassadly had to pull out due to a muscle strain in his right hand, but thankfully the talented and experienced Craig Ogden istaking his place. Ogden will be performing Rodrigo's 'Fantasiapara un gentilhombre', a piece with real crossover appealfeaturing slinking guitar lines in a romantic set of dances.

Excerpts from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet and De Falla'sThe Threecornered Hat (Suite No. 2) are also beingperformed, resulting in a bright programme for a springSaturday evening. It will be contrast to the atmospherics ofStott earlier in the week, and the two shows are a perfectexample of the breadth of musical options in Brighton.Andy Stott, Patterns (formerly Audio), Wed 13 April, 8pm, £12.50,benothing.ticketabc.com/events/andystottLondon Philharmonic Orchestra, Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Sat16 April, 7.30pm, £10£32.50, brightondome.org/event/7356

COMEDYVICTORIA NANGLE

This weekend saw thelaunch of Brightonbased

comedy singersongwriterHannah Brackenbury’s longawaited second album,‘Jumbled’. She also competedas a finalist in the MusicalComedy Awards in theUdderbelly on London’s SouthBank (fingers crossed for hertaking the title, but due toprint deadlines we just don’tknow at time of going topress). It’s looking like beingBrackenbury’s year, and‘Jumbled’ is certainly a mostexcellent indicator of this.

It’s cheeky from theopening track ‘Country MusicFan’ – embracing good honestinnuendo and quick wit, without a weak song amongstthe collection. Even thedelightfully silly celebration ofbreasts just makes you laugh, although a favourite is the

cheeky homage to The SoundOf Music.

Brackenbury’s humour isstrong and warm, and it’sgood to hear more of heroriginal material after therunaway YouTube success ofher lesbian Taylor Swift sendup – ‘Cats Together’, provingthat she’s not simply a cleverlyricist. She’s an entirecomedy songwriter. And she’sgot loads of them for us toenjoy.Hannah Brackenbury –Jumbled, The Verdict, Saturday30 April, 8pm, £5,www.brackers.co.uk
