CHAPEL NOTESRichard Koerselman
Happy New Year! Did you know that New Year’s Day is the one holiday that is almost universal? It is the world’s most observed holiday and it is often about making resolutions.
The late Erma Bombeck made some memorable resolutions:
1. I will go to no doctor whose office plants have died.2. I’m going to apply for a hardship scholarship to Weight
Watchers.3. I will never loan my car to anyone I’ve given birth to.Resolutions can be fun, but sometimes we take them
seriously. But if we fail, shouldn’t worry, Lent begins on March 6; then we can give them up.
Did you hear about the poor guy who dialed his girlfriend and got the following recording: “I am not available right now, but thank you for caring enough to call. I am making some changes in my life. Please leave a message after the beep. If I do not return your call, you are one of the changes.”
There can be real disappointments when we resolve to change. The Bible has a good answer in Philippians 3.
My friends, I don’t feel that I have already arrived. But I forget what is behind, and I struggle for what is ahead. I run toward the goal, so that I can win the prize of being called to heaven. This is the prize that God offers because of what Christ Jesus has done.
May God richly bless you in all of 2019.

On December 4, 2018, we had a lively discussion of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. We talked about the power of writing to bring order to our experiences. A.J. Fikry lives alone on Cape Cod and owns a bookstore. His life is turned upside down when a mysterious “package” appears at the bookstore and he is given a chance to make his life over. This novel has humor, romance, a touch of suspense, and love; it captures the joy of connecting people and books. It is about the triumph of love and literature over loss and loneliness. Meaningful quotes: “Sometimes books don’t find us until the right time.” Sign on A.J.’s bookstore: “No Man Is an Island; Every Book is a World.”
Please join us on January 8 at 10:00 AM in the Saguaro Room to discuss the book Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas.
Our reading list for January-June 2019 includes the following books:
Jan. 2019 Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas.Feb. 2019 The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See. March 2019 Share a favorite bookApril 2019 The Day the World Came to Town by Jim Defede. May 2019 Look me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger’s
by John Elder Robison.June 2019 The Letter by Kathryn Hughes.

SUNLAND STITCHERSJoan Falken
Happy 2019! The New Year finds us reviewing 2018 and acknowledging the many members who have donated time and energy to our sharing efforts. Sunland Stitchers made designer surgical caps for children going into surgery at Banner Children’s Hospital, sewed quilts that are donated to Hospice, Care Centers, and the Child Crisis Center, and made tote bags for kids who shop for personal items and clothes at Helen’s Hope Chest. This summer our volunteers sent quilts to flood victims in Georgia. Some members also belong to the SVE knitting and crocheting group and provided knitted baby items for Maggie’s Place.
In addition to the folks we acknowledged earlier this year, we thank Lee Jackson for giving us two huge tubs of fabric and batting to be used on our sharing projects or next garage sale. We also thank all the wonderful folks who donated to, and purchased from our garage sale and craft fair booth and to Jim Hulbert for donating the beautiful mesquite bowl with turquoise inlay won by Kathy Rozalewycz. A special shout out goes to everyone selling and purchasing tickets on our golf cart so we can improve our work space and share even more of our talents.
Come join our group. We meet at 12:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Oakwood Room. Members enjoy miles of smiles with the fellowship and friendliness found at our meetings and workshops.
For more information, contact Karen Thurn, Membership Chair, at 701-220-5182, or email: [email protected].

PANCAKE BREAKFASTEd Malone
The big news this month is that we have found someone to replace me. His name is Tony Rasberry. I introduced him to the team and he was well received. Tony needs all our support. I will continue working with Tony for the rest of this season.
Our pancake breakfast in December was a great success. We had 526 guests. After expenses we had a profit of $1577.00, an increase of $426.00 from last month.
We not only had more regulars back to help, but we also had new volunteers. I hope that they
will all be back for future breakfasts. We still are looking for
volunteers. Please give me a call. Ed Malone 480-984-8092 or my cell: 480-236-5870.

DOGS R USL.Paulsen
Hi! I’m Lulu, a 4-month-old semi-sweet, semi-wild Shih Tzu puppy. I was born in Iowa, adopted by Rob and Pat Bleckinger and traveled to a home in Minnesota for the fall. It started to get cold there, so we came on a LONG drive to Arizona. I’m now learning about cactus and rock lawns, but I still find some grass to roll in once in awhile. I just visited the vet for some shots and had my first hair cut. So many new things all at once!
I am meeting new neighbors, and I love everybody. If you give me a chance, I will bite you a little bit! I look forward to meeting all dogs in the Dog Club. I think I will like it here in Sunland Village East.
In February, we will be having our yearly drive to help animal shelters with needed supplies.

WATER VOLLEYBALLAl Hensley
Come join us for lots of fun in the sun at Water Volleyball. Everyone is welcome. Play is at the north pool on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. If you want to try it first, just call and we can make arrangements to meet. I can show you how to play and tell you the rules. Contact Al Hensley at 480-404-6056 or email at [email protected] or Mike Lauer at 602-291-2823 or email at [email protected]
A belated Merry Christmas and a very happy, healthy and blessed New Year to everyone! We ended 2018 playing lots of pickleball, in spite of the chill in the air and the need to dress warm. We participated in the annual Christmas parade and had a lot of fun decorating, singing and parading. New Year’s evening we gathered together to welcome 2019.
Now, the New Year is here and 2019 looks exciting. We have started planning for our annual Potato Bar fundraiser in the auditorium – February 9th. This year we have decided our potato bar will include chili, and we will be providing chili in place of our soup contest. Back by popular demand will be karaoke and silent auction. We look forward to serving everyone at our annual loaded potato bar and fun night!
In January we will elect two new pickleball board positions, vice president and secretary. I will soon be passing the secretary’s mantel to a new person. I have been blessed to have met and interacted with so many supportive pickleball club members who share the love of this sport. Also, in my capacity as secretary, I have gotten to know many residents in our greater community who continue to support pickleball’s growth as a viable sport here at SVE. Thank you all!
We continue our beginner lessons for anyone interested in giving pickleball a try. We have a full court schedule posted at the courts, including open play for SVE residents who are not members. If you like outdoor sports, meeting new people and having fun pickleball could be your sport. Hope to see you on the courts!
Carleton MooreOur annual Sloppy Joe
Luncheon fund raiser will be on Wednesday, January 23rd from 11am to 1pm. Mark your calendars for this culinary event. It includes fun raffles for prizes from local stores and restaurants. Buy the tickets from Shuffleboard Club members or the SVE front office. Limited tickets available at the door so please get your tickets early. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the luncheon. This helps us buy our shuffleboard supplies and
equipment. The club is now having a
social hour and fun play every Wednesday at 3:30pm. Come and try out the game and have some fun. If you wish, please bring your own drink and snack. Our regular play days are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 9:30am. Saturday is in-park (SVE) league play, but there are a couple of boards for open play, too. Please come and give it a try or retry as the case may be. Come any or all days as you please. We are very happy to report we have
picked up many new players. The shuffleborders were
out in force to run the annual curbside Food Drive pickup. THANKS to all of you who remembered to put out bags or take them to the office. It was a great success! We collected many van loads of food.
Watch our bulletin board on the shuffleboard court building with details on our activities. For more information please call Larry McGhinnis (630) 917-1707. Our club president is Curtis Faul (480) 245-8326.
Carmella Mongold A bit of Bocce humor:“You’re so involved with bocce,” whined
the wife, “that you can’t even remember the day we were married.”
“That’s what you think!” countered the husband. “It was the same day I scored 12 points in three frames.
January is the beginning of our league play! Our first game is January 7th. Games are daily at 9:30 am. Come out and watch or join our club and be a substitute player. Our dues are $5.00 per year. Open play, with instructors available, is on Friday at 9:30 am. Come out and give it a try! If you wish to play on your own, the equipment is kept in a closet near the courts. The courts are open until 9 pm. (lights can be turned on). If you
are playing on your own, please be sure the equipment is returned to the closet and the lights are turned off when finished. The game rules are posted at the courts.
Bocce social nights are held on the 2nd Saturday of each month at the Mesa Verde room. The next social is on Saturday, January 12th ;doors open at 6:00 pm. Come and have a great time playing games and socializing. Guests are welcome!
The Friday Jam Sessions are held each Friday from 12:30 – 2:45 pm in the auditorium. We have a 50/50 drawing every week and the concession stand is open for drinks and snacks. Come and dance, visit, or just sit and enjoy the music.
If you have any questions, call President Lois Wierenga at 708-341-4616.

COUPLES GOLFMary Ann RoersWe are back in the swing of things, and the Couples
Golf members are meeting every Friday morning to play 9 or 18 holes on our beautiful course. A social at 4:30 pm at the auditorium is held each Friday after play. At the Friday social, awards are presented for play that day. Please join us by bringing a BYOB and an appetizer to share that serves at least 8 adults. A fun time is held; please consider joining us.
Many members of the Couples Golf enjoyed participating and/or watching the Christmas Cart Parade that was held on December 5th. Entrants also included the Mesa Fire and Rescue Truck, and the Desert High School Marching Band who provided great music. The warm weather provided a pleasant time.
On December 13th, we participated in Christmas caroling. We stopped at various homes to sing carols to many of our shut-in and other families within the Village. We ended the evening with refreshments at Fat Willy’s.
December 14th saw us celebrating Christmas with a lovely dinner catered by Zappone’s Italian Bistro, followed by dancing to the music of the Good Times Band.
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and we wish you the best Happy New Year.

SOFTBALL Al Ludwig
The first week of January in 2019 is not only the start of the new year but also the start of winter softball season at Sunland Village East! This year starts off with the addition of a new higher, nearly clear safety net protecting vehicles and pedestrians on Guadalupe Boulevard. Although the new net is an HOA asset, it was financed by both HOA and Softball Club funds. Also new this year are some exciting new resident softball players. Our season features a full slate of games each day of the week, with men’s softball each weekday morning starting at 8:00 am through mid-afternoon. The skill level of players runs from very competitive to recreational ball. The Softball Club welcomes all skill level players! Our ladies team plays on Mondays and Wednesdays in the afternoons. Specific game times for all teams are posted on the bulletin board located at the SVE ballfield.
If you enjoy watching exciting (and sometimes comical) softball, stop by to watch your neighbors compete against other resident parks. If you are no longer available to participate on a team but would like to be involved in the excitement of the game, the club would love to have you learn to run the scoreboard (it’s easy) or other field activities. See you at the games!

Reserve Study – Kim HardingThe HOA received the updated Reserve Study in
November, 2018. The study is completed by an independent firm under contract with the HOA. At the request of the BOD the following 3 areas were added to the reserve study for funding: interior enhancements of facilities, facility equipment and furniture, landscaping. The study is updated every 2 to 3 years and used by the HOA to set aside money for anticipated expenditures. They are complicated issues; we want to be sure they are done correctly. We will leave this on the agenda for future discussion based on recommendations from legal counsel.
