Olweus Program

During the 2017 - 18 school year we will continue implementing the Olweus program. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, or OBPP for short, is the most researched and best-known bullying prevention program available today. Developed by Dr Dan Olweus of Norway, OBPP has over thirty-five years of research behind it and has been implemented throughout the world, in countries such as the United States, Canada, England, Mexico, Iceland, Germany, Sweden, and Croatia, in addition to Norway.

OBPP is recognized by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence as one of only eleven Blueprints Model Programs and by the Substance Abuse and mental health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as a Model program- two of the highest honors a prevention program can attain. It has also received numerous awards from other organizations dedicated to addressing the issue of bullying among students.

Programs Offered at Las Animas School

Dual Immersion: The Dual Immersion program at Las Animas Elementary offers children a unique and exciting opportunity to learn to read, write and communicate fluently in two languages, English and Spanish. Dual Immersion is instructed 50% in English and 50% in Spanish. It focuses on the California standards at every grade level. This program provides a sound basis for academic excellence for all students as well as meeting the goal for foreign language learning for higher education. Any Gilroy elementary student can enroll if all district criteria are met. Dual Immersion is a K-12 district program. For more information, call our school office.

Character Counts: Character Counts is the nation’s most widely implemented non-profit approach to character education. Character Counts is neither religious nor political. Administrators, principals, and teachers across the nation have found that Character Counts significantly improves the way kids interact with adults. Research shows dramatically reduced behavior problems, reduced truancy and increased test scores. CHARACTER COUNTS! is two things: an educational framework for teaching universal values and a national coalition of organizations that support each other. Character Counts is a means to advance behavior goals using a framework based on basic values called the six pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. Character Counts can be applied in youth training, sports, business, public service and policing.

Respect Caring Responsibility Follow the golden rule Be kind Do what you are supposed to do Treat others with respect Be compassionate and show

you care Persevere: keep trying!

consider the consequences Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements

Be accountable for your choices

Trustworthiness Fairness Citizenship Be honest Play by the rules Do your share to make your school and

community better Don’t deceive, cheat or steal Take turns and share Cooperate Be reliable-do what you say you’ll do Be open minded; listen to

others Get involved in community affairs

Have the courage to do the right thing Don’t take advantage of others

Stay informed; vote

Build a good reputation Don’t blame others carelessly Be considerate of the feelings of others Be loyal-stand by your family, friends and country

Student Wellness Policy Quick Facts

The Gilroy Unified School District recognizes the link between student health and academic achievement. Healthy, active, and well-nourished children are more likely to attend school and be more prepared and motivated to learn. An integrated and coordinated school health program will result in school environments that promote and protect children’s health, well-being, and ability to learn.

● A Student Wellness Policy is required by Sec. 204 of the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act.● All school districts participating in the National School Lunch Program must have a Wellness Policy in

place.● The GUSD Wellness Policy was approved by the school board on March 2, 2006 and became effective in

August 2006.

The GUSD Wellness Policy is based on the eight-component model of coordinated school health. These eight components are:

● Health Education● Physical Education● Nutrition Services● Health Services● A Safe and Healthy School Environment● Parent and Community Involvement● Health Promotion for Staff● Psychological and Counseling Services

You Should Know: ● Childhood Obesity has tripled since 1970● Studies show that nutrition is related to physical well-being, growth and development, positive learning

and risk of diseases

There is a lot more to be done, but in its first year of implementation the Wellness Policy worked to accomplish the following:

● A decrease in child obesity by providing healthy school meals and snacks that do not exceed 30 percenttotal fat and 10 percent saturated fat.

● Improved physical activities in Physical Education classes and during recess time.● Increased communication to parents and the community regarding the importance of proper nutrition,

physical activity, and healthy behavior.

Our District is committed to: ● Having all meals served by qualified nutrition professionals.● All meals served for the National School Lunch program not exceeding 30 percent total fat and 10 percent

saturated fat.● All a la carte items sold not exceeding 30 percent total fat and 10 percent saturated fat.● The food service department having sole authority to provide food and beverages from the beginning of

the school day until after the last lunch period to ensure food safety and maximize healthy and appealingmeals.

● Fundraising that does not involve food or only uses food that meets the nutrition and portion controlstandards detailed in the Policy.

The District also has a Health Council and new members are always welcome. If you have any questions about the Student Wellness Policy or would like more information about joining the Health Council please call (669) 205-4000 or e-mail the Food Service Department at [email protected]
