TheOxfordSchoolofDrama

ofanyaccreditedschool,whichmeansthatyoullbetreatedasan
individual,andnotgetlostinacrowd.Italsomeansthatattheendof
yourcourseyoullbeseenbypotentialemployersinagroupofaround
30students,notoneinover100asatsomeschools.

WakefieldandtheatreproducerThelmaHolt.TheGuidehasbeenwelcomedbyalargenumberofindustryprofessionalsincluding:Alan

ThreeYearDiplomainActingCourse
Thisisademandingcoursebasedonthetraditionalvaluesofclassical
actingadaptedtosuittheneedsofcontemporarymedia.Itispractical,nottheoretical,andaimstoequipyouwithalltheskillsandexpertise
youneedtobecomeadynamicandcourageousactor.Thetrainingis
verymuchstudentcentredgivingtimeforindividualattention.
Youwillbeginthefirstyearwithsimpleexercisesandimprovisations,
spendingtimeexploringyourselfandthedynamicsofhuman
behaviour.Firstperformanceswillbeshortimprovisations,movingontodetailedscenesandfinallyafullscaleproductionattheendofthe
year.
Inthesecondyeartheemphasisshiftstotherehearsalprocess,looking
athowtoworkcreativelyandeffectivelyintherehearsalroomandhow
toadapttothestylisticdemandsofdifferentdramatictexts.Second
yearproductionsarepresentedtoyourfellowstudentsandtutorsand,
inthesummerterm,areopentothepublic.
Thethirdyearisaboutdevelopingyourflexibility,confidenceandability
toworkquicklyunderpressure.Coreclassesinvoice,movement,film

auditionfortheBBCCarletonHobbsRadioAward.Attheendofthis

TermThreeThisbeginswithafullscalepublicproduction(usually
Shakespeare)byanexperiencedprofessionaldirector.Filmwork
continuesinpreparationforfilmingonlocationwithaprofessional

youaretorealizeyourfullpotential.Coreclassesinfilmandtelevision,
radioandprofessionaldevelopmentrunalongsideactingclassesand
aretaughtbyspecialisttutorswithmanyyearsexperienceinthe
professionandteachingatthisSchool.Youwillhaveregularindividual

TECHNICALCLASSES
Yourbodyandimaginationareyourkeytoolsasanactor.Throughoutyourtrainingyouwillbegineverymorningwith30minutesofbodyand
voiceconditioning,toprepareyouforthedayandtobuildyour
stamina.Youwillthencontinuewithclassesdesignedtoexploreand
developyourskillsinordertoattainthehigheststandardsofbothvocal
andphysicaltechnique.
TheSchoolpridesitselfonitsholisticapproachtothedevelopmentofstudentsindividualcapabilities.Thereisgreatemphasisonthe

HowtoApplyandtheAuditionProcess
Entryisbyauditiononly.Therearenoacademicrequirements.Wetry
toconductourauditionsandselectionproceduresinamannerthatencouragesyoutofeelatease.Wesendyouhelpfuladviceonhowbest
toprepareyourself,howwemakeourdecisionsandourappeals
procedure.Attheauditionwearehappyforyoutoaskquestionsand
wewilltrytoanswerthem.
Theapplicationprocedure
1 Completetheenclosedenrolmentformandreturnittothe AdmissionsAdministratorwithachequetocovertheauditionfee
2 Wewillwritetoyouwithdetailsofyouraudition
NBWeadviseyoutosendyourenrolmentformasearlyaspossible.
Thereisasectionontheformwhichasksyouravailabilityandwemake
everyefforttoarrangetheauditionatatimemostsuitabletoyou.See
coveringletterfortheclosingdateforapplications.
Theauditionprocedure
1 Foractingcourses:youwillneedtoprepareaspeechfrom
ElizabethanorJacobeandrama(e.gShakespeare,Jonsonetc)and
acontrastingmodernpiecepost1950,eachnomorethanoneand
halfminuteslong.
Formusicaltheatrecourse:youwillneedtoprepare2
contrastingmusicaltheatresongs.Onemusthavebeenwritten
before1965.Songsmustbememorizedandyoumustbringa copyofyourmusicwrittenintherightkey.Apianistwillbe
provided.
2 YouwillspendamorningattheSchool,takingpartinagroup
sessionaswellasyourindividualaudition.Youmaybeaskedto

stayintotheafternoonsoyoushouldbepreparedtospendthe
wholedayattheSchool.
3 FreetransporttoandfromOxfordisavailableifrequired.
4 BeforebeingofferedaplaceontheThreeorOneYearCourse
studentsneedtoattendafirstroundandarecallaudition.Some FoundationCoursestudentsmayalsoberequiredtoattenda
recallaudition.
5 Individualauditionswillbefilmedattherecallstageforthe
ThreeandOneYearCourses.

FeesforEUstudentsontheThreeYearandOneYearcourseare
payabletermlyinadvance.FornonEUstudentsandFoundationCourse
studentsfullcoursefeesforthecurrentyeararepayableinadvanceof
thecommencementofthecourse.Placesoncourseswillonlybe
confirmedonreceiptofadepositof500.Thedepositwillbereturned
withinsixweeksofsuccessfulcompletionofthecourse.
