BORN TO RUN Bruce SpringsteenIn 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That’s how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, he has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to these pages the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs. Rarely has a performer told his own story with such force and sweep. Like many of his songs, Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography is written with the lyricism of a singular songwriter and the wisdom of a man who has thought deeply about his experiences.

For the Gentleman Reader (and Other Booklovers)
“A stellar, thought-provoking debut brimming with energy . . . Though punctuated with tragic acts of violence, the taut prose and lyrical descriptions of the American landscape perfectly balance the escalating tension in a haunting search for salvation and compassion. Will justly be compared with the work of Richard Price and George Pelecanos but is infused with the spirit of Mark Twain. Make no mistake, this is a great American novel for the 21st century.”

Roberta is the director of the Kentland-Jefferson Township Public Library located in Kentland, a small rural town in Northwest Indiana. She has been the director there for 31 years, now serving a population of around 1,750. Roberta was born and raised in Kentland and went to college at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She worked for two years at another small public library in Indiana before moving back home to marry a local farmer, and has been at Kentland ever since. Since high school, Roberta’s dream job was to be a librarian at a small public library. She wears many hats and finds that each day is different. Her favorite part of being a librarian is reader advisory; she has so much fun introducing readers to new authors or to old favorites. Since Kentland is a small community, Roberta is never surprised when she’s stopped at the bank or grocery store and asked to renew a book; give a title recommendation, or hear about a title someone enjoyed.
Some of Our Large Print Best Practices Include:• We sticker all Large Print titles with a Large Print sticker. When patrons are browsing the fiction
collection they can tell at a glance if the title is large print. Patrons have mentioned how helpful it is to have the stickers on the spine of the book.
• About three years ago we revamped our new book display by attaching two six-foot bookcases together in an open space near the adult fiction collection. There we display regular print fiction in one section and large print fiction in the section right next to it. Since having both formats right next to each other, our large print circulation increased. It introduced the large print format to readers who had not considered checking out a large print title. Displaying and shelving large print with regular print is definitely a plus for our fiction readers.
• Over the past three years I have expanded the number of titles and types of fiction that I am purchasing in large print. I am buying more bestsellers, popular authors, and new buzz authors in large print.
• I appreciate the simultaneous publication of popular authors in large print. Many times I just purchase the title in large print; I know that any of our patrons can read the large print format.

Roberta says: This debut novel took me from the early 20th century to early 21st century Afghanistan following the lives of two Afghani women. This is a thought-provoking and fascinating story that moves the reader between the two time periods. It was amazing how much strength is needed to be a woman in that culture. It made me appreciate all the opportunities that women have in the U.S.

Roberta says: This is a great debut novel that features an intriguing main character in Abby Endicott, chief of Boston’s District Attorney’s homicide unit. Abby bends the rules to achieve justice for the victims. Legal thrillers are one of my favorite genres and this title was full of twists and turns which kept me in my chair reading into the night. I look forward to reading more of this series.

A BRIDGE TO READING INDEPENDENCEA Reading Solution That Works
Educational studies show that large print books have a place alongside the regular print books in any classroom or library. They are a necessary ingredient in a successful reading program for students of all ages.
Research and action studies confirm that large print improves reading speed and comprehension and is an extremely effective alternative tool for students reading below grade level. The larger font and additional white space between lines slows the eye and increases the care that students take with the text. Because large print books appeal to reluctant readers they are more willing to pick up books and read, often encouraging their classmates to do the same.
Teachers and Librarians Nationwide Use Large Print to Improve . . .
• Reading confidence and fluency
• Letter and word recognition
• Reading comprehension
• Reading satisfaction
. . . Which translates to improved reading scores
Action studies confirm that words are easier to decode in large print and the frequency of reading miscues is reduced. Once fluency and reading rates improve, energy can go into comprehension and students begin to enjoy reading.

AFTER YOUJoJo MoyesA note from Jojo Moyes: Dear Reader, I wasn’t going to write a sequel to Me Before You. But for years, readers kept asking and I kept wondering what Lou did with her life. In the end the idea came. It has been such a pleasure
revisiting Lou and her family, and the Traynors, and confronting them with a whole new set of issues. As ever, they have made me laugh, and cry. I hope readers feel the same way at meeting them again.

Did you know?Thorndike Press large print books are often the same size or smaller than their hardcover
or trade paperback counterparts, weigh about the same as a traditional hardcover book, and are unabridged. The magic lies in the combination of printing on a thinner, higher quality paper and
laying out the text to maximize the use of white space.
