January 2012 Dear Los Amigos Members, Wow, 2012 is HERE!! 2011 flew by and while it was a challenge, Los Amigos had a fantastic year. We started off the year assisting with the Peruvian Horse booth at Equine Affaire in conjunction with the SCPPHC. In no time, the 30 th Annual Los Amigos Championship show was held in late July. Only a few weeks later, the first ever Los Amigos Santa Ynez Valley Ranch Tour took place. Various Peruvian Horse ranches graciously hosted over 100 people, most of whom had never experienced the “glide ride” of a Peruvian. It was a fantastic opportu- nity for people to meet the breed up close and personal. The year ended with our annual membership meeting, hosted by the Mann family of HVM Ranch now in Simi Valley. Once again, it was a fun event! At the meeting, the 2012 board of directors was also elected: Charlotte Dicke Becerra, President Dianna Whisenant, First Vice President Joline Hahn, Second Vice President Andres Salinas, Treasurer Vanita Mann, Secretary We were sad to lose Danell Adams from our board but look forward to continuing to work with her as president of the SCPPHC. Thank you Danell for your great ideas and years of service to Los Amigos! We also welcome back Debbie Pye as our newsletter editor. She did an outstanding job for many years on Amigo and we are so excited to have her back; thank you for volunteering Debbie! At the 2011 show, we were grateful that Pepe Risso officiated not only our classes but also the new tapas competition; the perfect fun event for Pepe who happens to be a restauranteur. For those of you that weren’t there, you missed out! The food and presen- tation was incredible; we had no idea that it would be such a success. The board plans to have the tapas competition again this year but with better guidelines based upon input from those who participated to make the event even better. If you have any ideas for the 2012 tapas competition, please contact Vanita Mann, as she will be heading it up this year. Again, we congratulate our THREE Laureados: HLC Casanova, RDLF Claro de Luna+ and AR Ambicioso. Plans are in the works for 2012 already. We are excited to have Tony Hudtwalcker as our judge this year. At the membership meeting last month, we discussed the class schedule and have decided that it is best for our exhibitors and the horses to have halter classes on Friday instead of Sunday. Some new classes will be added for those VERY new to the show ring to allow them to get their feet wet in a comfortable environment. While the Reining Series will be condensed down to only one pattern class, the Gaited Dressage division will remain. We also continue to serve the Breeding division with the expanded Pisos and Bozal division as well as our special high points such as the Premio del Futuro de la Raza and Conquistador Cup awards. As always, we are working hard to produce a show that cannot be missed! We hope to see you all there. Wishing you all the best in 2012 and again, if there is anything that your board of directors can do to better serve you, please don’t hesitate to let us know. “I rode in the Rose Parade!”Just the sound of this phrase causes excitement! So many ofus have watched the Rose Parade every year on televisionsince we were little, only dreaming about riding down ColoradoBoulevard on a beautiful horse! Well, my dream came true in2009, when Danell Adams and the SCPPHC put together agroup of riders and horses to apply for the 2010 Rose Parade.Bonnie Gallegos and her mother made our fabulous signaturered ponchos, hatbands and horse decor. The group of 12-13riders began practicing together, and putting on demos atvenues such as Equine Affaire, Fiesta of the Spanish Horse, and Pierce College. We woke up very early in order to ride inthe San Juan Capistrano Swallows Parade, Norco Horseweekparade, Laguna Beach parade, and more. We submitted ourhorses’ and our own bio’s and photos in a huge binder to theTOR Parade Committee. All our preparations came to fruitionwhen we were accepted as one of only 20 equestrian units toride in the prestigious world renowned parade!

The first year is always the most exciting, from the EquestrianReception, the performance in the televised EquestFest, andculminating in the 5-1/2 mile march through downtownPasadena. Nothing can compare with that feeling when I heardmy 83 year-old mother call out my name from the stands and Iwas able to turn and see her standing up, waving to me! I willalways cherish that moment! Or the deafening roar of thecrowds as we turned that well-known corner onto the ‘camerachute.’ My husband Mike was also part of the group that firstyear, which made it even more special for us. The followingyear, Mike was not able to ride for quite a while, but after re-covering from two knee surgeries, he was back in the saddleagain when we were accepted for the third time, to ride in the2012 parade.

It has truly been an adventure, one that we both will neverforget! To represent the Peruvian Paso breed and our club,paca-paca-ing alongside our friends on their champion horses,is a special privilege, and is a once-in-a-lifetime event. I needto put all my mementos, including the participant ribbons, pins, wristbands, photos and more into a scrapbook to share yearsfrom now, when I can say – “I rode in the Rose Parade!”

Kathryn Grossman

From Lacey JamesHad a really good time in the parade and loved ridingit with my Mom, again. I got to ride an awesomehorse (thank you, Anne Ryan)….but missed beingable to use my own awesome horse, “my baby”Lorayna.

From Robin JamesBest Rose Parade ever, and I’ve ridden in 7 of them! Perfectweather, great company, TOR Staff perfect as always, myman Patch was perfect and I actually got 4-5 hours sleep too!!Couldn’t ask for better!!

From Daryl ThompsonThe 2011 Dream Team for me was wonderful. Theparades and demos that we participated in helped toexpand our breeds popularity around the world as wellas building “esprit de corps” amongst our variousclubs. The 2012 Rose Parade was the best, howevermay have been a little too hot (87 degrees) for all, butwe were applauded by the entire parade route. All inall, it was fun!!

From Aggie SteelThe parade crowd was great and very supportive. Theyseemed to like us a lot!! I had mixed feeling about doing it upuntil the very end due to the stress on the horses. Bordoneowas a champ and did exactly what I asked of him. What apleasure to own this horse!! As we went down the street, itwas amazing to share the camaraderie and lots of laughterwith the other members of the group. Thank you to all thepeople who supported our efforts.

Rose Parade 2012

From Carolyn TruskowskiMorning came rather early and we all got up aboutthe same time. It was pretty peaceful until the lasthour when everything seemed to be rushed. We hadto prepare the horses, prepare ourselves, getdressed in the rigs, and load everything up. All therigs would be moved, once we were mounted.Breaking camp was hectic, but moving along reallywell. We were all rushing around with only 10minutes until we were to be ready to leave.Everyone mounts and the flowers on most of thehorses manes start flying off. Off we go to try andput them back on securely. We are guided up theramp and over to the bridge. On the bridge thatcrosses the freeway is a complete band playingaway. The noise and everything else amps up someof the horses. The band loves it and smiles as wedance the entire length of the bridge stopping tomake the turn onto the trail that takes us to thestreet that we stage upon. We get on the street andstop and wait. Everyone is losing ribbons or flowersand having to get off and put them back on. One ofthe floats goes by and it is the dragon breathingsteam. The horses look in wonder. We move up andfinally the dog float starts to move past us. We are infront and it is our turn to be inserted in the parade. We round the corner where all the cameras are, andwe are on.....I tried to remember to look up into the bleachers sothat my face would not be blocked by my hat. It washard to wave and keep Bandolero under control withone hand. The camera caught us as I was movinghim diagonally so that the middle could join back upin our line. It worked out perfectly. I was reallyrelaxed and not tense at all. I was having so muchfun and it was a thrill to know we were showing ourhorses to the world. We gaited several times alongthe way. The crowd loved it.We get to the trailers, hose off the horses, eat, andload up. When we arrive at the ranch, I hearBandolero was actually featured in the narrative forthe horses!! How exciting!!

It was my privilege to be a small part of this event. RSV Payaso was Jorge Valenzuela’s mount. After theperformance, as I was leading Payaso to the barn, I was stopped by a portion of the crowd. The questionsabout the horse, tack, training, gait were endless. But, what impressed me so much more were the childrenwho just wanted to “pet a horse”. A true ambassador of the breed, not a single parent had to lift a child, asPayaso lowered his head for each little hand to pet him on his forehead.Other members of the team were being “interviewed” by the crowds, and many followed us back to the barnsfor more information and more petting!! This is such a great event for showing off our horses to the public!!Debbie Pye

2012 Rose Paradeby Cathy Yaskivich

On January 2nd, the SCPPHC Riders completed anotherride in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. This isthe third consecutive year the group has been acceptedinto, what I consider, the best parade in the world. A cou-ple weeks before the parade we were honored with a re-quest to perform short routines in front of the cameras onboth Orange Grove Blvd. and Colorado Blvd., havingbeen placed behind Dick Van Patten’s Natural BalanceFloat which not only was the largest float in history, buthad dogs surfing in tons of water. Between this float andmovement of our horses, the crowds were thrilled! Theweather was perfect and between this float and our horses, the crowds remained excited. We were well received andall the riders had FUN as always! This is a very hardworking team consisting of Cathy Yaskivich (marshal),Robin James, Jorge Valenzuela, Lauren Leatherbury,Carolyn Truskowski, Daryl Thompson, KathrynGrossman, Mike Grossman, Ken Jallen, Susie McMahan,Aggie Steel and Lacey James. Unfortunately, SeanMcMahan, a member of the team was unable to partici-pate in the Rose Parade due to his young age. He wasmissed by all. The “dream team” is looking forward toanother year of parades and drills/demos.

SO CAL ROSE PARADE “DREAM TEAM”RIDES THROUGH A THIRD YEAR!

Submitted by Danell AdamsOn January 2, 2012 the world was once again, entertainedby the Clubʼs parade team and our beautiful horses. Thisis the third consecutive year this team has had the honorof participating in the Rose Parade and the unique oppor-tunity of sharing our incredible breed with the world. On December 29, the team gathered at the Los AngelesEquestrian Center to prepare for Equestfest. This event ishosted by the Tournament of Roses and is intended togive the audience a show of most all of the equestriangroups riding in the parade. But first was the Equestrianparty hosted by Wells Fargo and the Equestrian Commit-tee. Our team and their guests enjoyed an evening at Uni-versal City Walk. Each year, the team attends this party intheir full parade costume with all of the other equestrianparticipants. Aggie Steel and Jorge Valenzuela furtherentertained attendees by riding the electric bull, and may Isay...only the Peruvian riders stepped up. What a show!On December 30, our team performed in front of apacked house which was also filmed live on RFD-TV andstreamed to viewers across the country. Immediately fol-lowing the team performance, three of our riders, CarolynTruskowski, Suzi McMahon and Kathryn Grossman re-turned to the arena for a champagne ride and a final toastto the audience. This toast and our teamʼs barrida are al-ways the highlights for the audience. Following the show, the team hosted the public with lots of horse petting, questions and photos of kids on our horses. Noble Solwas the absolute best ambassador and seemed to particu-larly enjoy the kids. All returned home to pack and prepare for the parade, which was one day later this year as the 1st fell on a Sun-day. So, Sunday night all headed up to “the pit” as it isknown. This is actually a section of the 110 freeway thatis blocked off for all of the equestrians. It is a long...shortnight as there isn't much sleep and all are up by 4:30 tobegin preparing for the parade. At 8:00 am, the Commit-tee Marshal appeared and our team was escorted to theirinsertion point. They were in the TV chute by 9:30 andhad good television coverage as the show was airedaround the world. By 1:00 the team was back to theirtrailers, thoroughly enjoyed a lunch provided by In & OutBurgers and the Equestrian Committee...and then the triphome...followed by much need rest!Congratulations to the 2012 team: Kathryn & MikeGrossman, Ken Jallon, Robin & Lacy James, LaurenLeatherbury, Suzi McMahon, Daryl Thompson, AggieSteele, Carolyn Truskowski, Jorge Valenzula & CathyYaskivich. Sean McMahon rode in the Equestfest per-formance, but was, unfortunately too young for the RoseParade. And a special thanks to the “ground grunts” at bothEquestfest and the parade: Danell Adams, Debbie Pye,Rick McMahon, Averie Stephens, Patty White, DianaWhisenant, Debbie Light, Anne Wilhite, Clyde James,Bill Bence & Ron Brown.

Los Amigos had their annual membership meeting on December 3rd at HVMRanch of Simi Valley. The turn out was great, the food delicious, the companysuperb and the conversation was lively. Los Amigos worked hard in 2011 to fulfilltheir mission statement of promoting the Peruvian Horse, educating people aboutour wonderful breed and hosting our annual show. Plans are in the works already tomake 2012 an even better year! At the meeting, we discussed various promotionalevents such as this year's Santa Ynez Valley Ranch Tour to be repeated in 2013,the 2012 Equine Expo in Pomona, the upcoming Horse Care Clinic in La Cresta atRancho Santos and, of course, the 31st Annual Los Amigos Championship Show tobe held July 20-22 in Santa Barbara. Some new class ideas were well received such

as the "Welcome Class" which will be a class for novices that just want to gettheir feet wet. Since it will not be a qualifying class, traditional tack and attirewill not be required.

Thenew series will be in more of a story format, so I plan to audition withRSV Soberania because she has been the most challenging, frustrat-ing, scary, satisfying and stubborn horse I have ever trained. I begantraining her the trail skills just this past December 15th and she isdoing really well at dragging a bag of loud cans, picking up the rain-coat, stepping over logs, sidepassing over poles, and she has a nicelittle canter and jump. In total there are about 30 such skills that wewill need to be able to do to be prepared.

I have been taking my students out for off property educational trailrides to the beach near the border of Mexico, to Caspers Park in beau-tiful San Juan Capistrano, Los Penasquitos Historic Park, GuajomePark, Santa Margarita River, and San Marcos trail system. I take twostudents at a time, they are chauffeured to the park, I act as guide andpersonal trainer, and then a ride home discussing what we learned.Hey real trail rides are like ACTHA rides.....you ride down the trail, and then you face an obstacle to overcome....a water puddle, blowingplastic, a log, a bunch of rocks....a snake! The only difference is,there are no judges on a regular ride. So yes, I am still an ACTHAfanatic. I adore doing those competitive rides! In the last four rides Idid with Me Llamo Altanero aka Junior, he was flawless in 23 of thechallenges and only made a mistake on 1. I am very proud of him. Herecently achieved the ACTHA Bronze Medal and along with that Ireceived an embroidered vest. Wow! This horse has won me somuch!!

I continue to offer rides on Peruvians for first timers, and I love help-ing people reach their dreams with our awesome breed. Please alwayslet me know if you have first time buyer type horses available for sale.

My Holiday Moment (Debbie Pye)

Every Holiday Season, I like to reflect on thethings in this world that make it special.Sometimes, I find myself absorbed in the prettylights, sometimes the special foods, sometimesthe special people in my life, etc. This year, myreflection fell to the relationship of one veryspecial horse, and his one special person. Most of you know Mary Alice Cline from hermany adventures in the show arena with hervery special friend, RSV Noble Sol. What youmay not realize is Mary Alice suffered a break to her vertebrae in 2011. For many weeks, shewas disabled, and not a regular visitor to theranch in Hemet. For the Christmas Season, a trail ride and mealwas planned for clients and friends of the JorgeValenzuela Training Center. The ride had 14participants. And, as always, the meal had manybonus people, celebrating the good will andhappiness of the season. During that celebration,Mary Alice arrived by wheelchair, with herdaughter Mary Kay. All of us were very happy to see her, and to visit with her, after her long absence. In the midst of the food, party, tables, chairs, andpeople, Jorge brought Noble Sol. As always, thishorse accepted all the confusion without question. He was led up to the wheelchair, and the lead ropewas relaxed. Upon looking at his surroundings, hedropped his nostrils close to the gray hair of MaryAlice, soaking up the smells of her. His eyes totallyrelaxed, and he stood very patiently while she visitedwith him. The communication of affection was open, honest and affected all of us who were witness to it.It will be my Holiday Moment for a very long time!!

Hacienda de las Rosas Winery is a family-owned winery, locatedin Ramona with a tasting room in Old Town, San Diego. As with anysmall family business…it all started with a dream. In this case, thedream started with a Peruvian Paso horse and 600 dead apple trees. With one horse in a boarding establishment, William and Tammy haddreams of moving to Ramona, and creating a Peruvian Paso horseranch. They already had the name in mind “Hacienda de las Rosas”,and when people asked where the ranch was located, Tammy wouldpoint to her head and say “right here, but someday it will be real!”

They ultimately found the perfect home and property…a Spanishadobe home, large 7 acre plot on a rolling hill, with 600 dead appletrees. They set to work clearing the land, building the horse facilities, and starting theirhorse ranch. Inthe midst ofclearing theland, William feltthat somethingshould beplanted, so hedecided to plantsome grapes “forfun.” When thegrapes started

coming in, William tried his hand at wine making, but as many greatbeginnings, the wines were okay, but not great. He then decidedthere was more than science to wine making…there was art as well,so he started learning from more seasoned wine makers in the regionon how to make great wine.

Three years ago, the family opened a wine tasting room in historic OldTown, San Diego. Entering an archway that reads “Drink Fine Wine…Ride Fine Horses”, guests are treated to both a wine and Peruvianhorse experience. A golden Peruvian Paso horse named “Promesade Perfeccion”, which translates to the “Promise of Perfection,” is fea-tured on every bottle of wine, with a description about the PeruvianPaso. Photos of the ranch horses and promotional materials aboutthe Peruvian Paso horse are given to visiting interested horse lovers. It’s alwaysnice when someone comes into the shop, points to the photos of the horses, andsays “isn’t that a Peruvian Paso?”

During the summer of 2012, the wine tastingroom in Ramona will also be open. The winerybuilding will be surrounded with landscaping andgardens, with a horse stall in the wine tastingarea, so that a stallion or mare and baby can bebrought in for guests to also the horses. With allbig dreams…it takes a lot of hard work, and bothTammy and William appreciate all the support, friendships and efforts that others in the localwine and Peruvian Paso horse communities whohave provided to help in their family’s goals anddreams. It’s also nice when one’s passions canbe blended into one’s work – both wine andhorses…people often say “isn’t that the perfectcombination?”

coming in, William tried his hand at wine making, but as many greatbeginnings, the wines were okay, but not great.
