Dear Los Amigos Members, Just a few short months into 2015 and we have had some great events that members of our club have participated in. One of them was the horse expo in Pomona the first weekend of February. Los Amigos co-sponsored a booth there to promote the Peruvian horse breed and our club. Thanks to all the members who volunteered that weekend. Our members have been out and about at several parades and open horse shows. Please make sure to let our newsletter editor Debbie Pye know about any activities you have participated in so she can feature them in the newslet- ter! The next newsletter is scheduled to be released online April 20th, so get her information soon! Our club newsletter is released online 4 times annually in digital format. You can see past issues here: http://issuu.com/lappc We are continuing to do updates to the new website. One benefit we brought to the members last year was the ability to pay for membership fees, sponsor- ships and show fees with credit cards. We have a (simple) store set up on our website to renew your membership online. Make sure to renew before the show, as you will receive a discount on ALL fees! Click here to renew online if you haven't already renewed your membership! The board of directors has been excited to move the show to the Ventura fair- grounds this year in 2015 . Many members had expressed a concern over the heat in Santa Barbara in July, and also the costs of the hotel rooms being difficult at all times of year in Santa Bar- bara. Because of that our BOD members, Andres Salinas and Vanita Mann investigated the Ventura fairgrounds as an option for 2015. Ventura is directly on the beach, resulting in much cooler temperatures during the day, and also has more hotel rooms available at more reasonable rates. The fairgrounds are under new management, and have had many new upgrades done since the last SCPPHC show held there 6+ years ago. As an added bonus, the Ventura location is a bit easier access for our Northern California owners who have limited show options available. We are exploring other options for 2016 and beyond. If you have any ideas for locations, please let us know. The arena has since been refurbished and new arena footing installed. I was fortunate to see this arena in use last Sep- tember during the Fair and was quite impressed with the nice footing. Andres Salinas and I also visited this facility 2 months ago to see for ourselves how the fairgrounds were looking. In the past we have heard the complaints that there was unsafe footing in the arena and around the facility due to rocks, which has caused problems for some of our horses. While no facility is free from rocks or debris, we did not see any problems that would have raised a flag since these upgrades have been done in recent years. We have everybody’s interest at heart in making sure this facility is as safe as possible. There are over 110 stalls available for our use, so plenty of room for all exhibitors. Plus we are able to offer better hotel rates at our host hotels. Please see the link to the premium for all the information on the show. If you have any concerns, please contact one of our BOD members to resolve your concerns. Ranch NewsPatty Lacroix ~~I started riding Peruvian horses five years ago andfell in love with them. My husband, on the otherhand, has accompanied me to horse shows, muckedstalls, assembled corrals, gone on countless trips tofeed stores, horse sat a colicky horse (mine); but hadnever ridden a Peruvian until today (April 14, 2015).I asked Jorge Valenzuela, my trainer, if Richardcould ride my horse today. He did one better by of-fering one of his stallions, RSV Noble Sol. Youknow, the one he dances with. Jorge came out of thebarn on Noble and he was dancing on our way to thearena. Richard wasn't too sure about this but weassured him Noble would take care of him , evenkids ride Noble, we told him. Richard's experiencewas so fun. He was surprised at how smooth andeasy it was to ride Noble. Thank you Jorge andRSV Noble Sol for sharing the ride so many of ushave come to love.

NEWS from Hacienda SosegadoWe have been very busy here at the ranch. We hosted an event onSunday, March 29, 2015, to introduce CCMV Mochero. Thisstallion is owned by Barbara and Jim Alexander and we werehappy to help acknowledge his arrival in this country. There were43 people here for the presentation and lunch. What a great day!The weather cooperated, the food was delicious, and the companywas a lot of fun. We had long-time breeders and owners herealong with brand new owners. The mixture of people made for agreat day!

There are three foals due here at the ranch. The first is from thecross of MLM Mercedes and Lindeza del Norte. This combina-tion has given us four fabulous offspring: DJG Miramar, DJGMirasol, DJG Retorno and now DJG Miraflores. The new filly isour excitement so far for this year. We are waiting for DJGBailarina and ECL Lola Negra to surprise us with their foals.

Hacienda Sosegado would like to congratulate new owners of ourhorses. Anne Ryan purchased RDL Incomparable, a stallion who will bring her great pleasure. Rebecca Milligan nowowns DWB Andreana (formerly DWP Aphrodite), a beautiful palomino mare. We will be seeing Rebecca and Andre-ana in the show ring this year! Lindeza del Norte, still going strong at 20 years of age, has been purchased by KerrieJustice, with a breeding to MLM Mercedes.

Congratulations to Sheralin Conkey for her purchase of two Peruvians, HMS Helena and OSP Premier. We welcomeher as a new owner of Peruvians as well as a boarder here at the ranch. She will be participating in shows as well. Weare delighted to have made these connections between these horses and their new owners. We are also very excited tohave more new individuals joining the Peruvian Horse family!

VogelstockerhofAfter our stud farm started to grow wedecided to buy a ranch where it was pos-sible to have our horses with us. Wefound a wonderful property which al-lows us to accommodate guests. It wasformerly used to produce vegetables, meats and other foods for a 1400's mon-astery. The grounds offer a familiar at-mosphere, as well as a break from dailybusiness, combining countryside nature and ourbeautiful Peruvian Paso horses. It is located justbetween the Palatine wine route and the PalatineForest , with nearly Mediterranean climate, andidyllic trails & pathways. We are situated only 30minutes from the bigger German cities ofKarlsruhe or Mannheim .

He had a few Peruvian Paso horses and a smallstud, just for his own passion, since the early 90's. I had never heard of this breed before. I had never even ridden agaited horse, although I have been riding since my early childhood. I wondered what those ponies were. But from thefirst moment I rode one, I started to love them. That easy riding;that will to go forward; and the willingness to please areunique. Two years later I got my first own Peruvian Paso as apresent from my husband. We decided to increase our stud farm.We bought some more mares and searched for our own breedingstallion. In Europe , the breed is still rather limited, making theavailability of breeding stock difficult to obtain. We have onlyabout 600 Peruvian Pasos in all of Europe , with only about 15-20breeders. If someone has a very good horse, it is likely not to befor sale. It took nearly 3 years of searching before we found theright one, RV Gitano Suave. We started a wonderful breeding pro-gram with that stallion. He is a goldenbuckskin, very well gaited, with alot ofpresence, brio and strong conformation.

My Passion for Peruvian Paso Horses (continued)The new stallionIt has been only a few years, but we realized wewould need a second breeding stallion to be ableto continue our breeding with our offspring. Thisstallion should be extraordinary. He should showvery good gaits, very good conformation withshort, strong pasterns, as well as possess excellentbloodlines noted for healthy stock, longevity &overall strength. He should have proven that hepasses his quality to his offspring. So we started our search. First in Germany , thenEurope . But nothing seemed to fit. So we startedto search in the Americas . At the beginning ofour search we took notice of a very special stal-lion: RDLF Sol Peruano. We loved his bloodlinesas a son of HNS Domingo, we loved his confor-mation, we loved his gait and his presence. Hewas shown on the website of Rancho de la Flore-cita as the preferred breeding stallion, so wenever gave it a thought that he could be for sale.We looked on several stallions from differentbreeders and bloodlines but in the end we cameback to Sol Peruano. We contacted Terry Jar-chow, who was now in retirement. She told uswhere to find Sol Peruano. We hoped to find ason that might be for sale, or perhaps anotherdescendent of HNS Domingo. We were excitedabout his strong and extraordinary heredity. But at the stud farm wherewe found Sol Peruano, there were no offspring of him for sale. Wediscussed a lot of other stallions until – finally – Sol Peruano, himself, was offered to us. We were so excited.

My Passion for Peruvian Paso Horses (continued)RDLF Sol PeruanoHe arrived in Germany at Vogelstockerhof in December 2014.Although he arrived very tired after his long journey, he im-pressed us with his presence and pride. For the next few weeks hewas very reserved. He hardly allowed touching, always showingthat he only tolerates and doesn’t like it. Except the children, ashe loved them from the first moment and allowed them to touchand cuddle him. The more we work with him, the more we earnhis confidence, the more he opens up, and the more we admirethis awesome horse. Not only because of his beauty, his smoothgaits and his strength. But also for his extraordinary and veryintelligent nature. Although he is really a show horse and brag-gart at the same time he is rideable without saddle and only witha halter. We are impatiently expecting his offspring next year, knowing that he brings all that wonderful blood of HNS Domingointo the European breed.

Caballos De BBC Hosts A Long Line Clinic In March

On March 22, 2015, Becky and I hosted a clinic for Sr. EnriqueCarranza at our ranch, Caballos De BBC, in Arizona. At this clinicSr. Carranza worked with three of our older horses and demon-strated a number of techniques in handling the long lines. All threeof these horses have benefited from Sr. Carranza’s long line train-ing, but especially our 9 year old Peruvian Paso Stallion, RDDQuerecotillo. Querecotillo is a true black stallion, having beentested by the UC Davis color lab. He is short at only 14 hands, butvery well conformed and strongly laterally gaited. He is out of themare Zaza De La Palizada imported from Peru by Oscar Composand the multi-champion stallion RCh Ventarrones+. He is currentlyfor sale and listed on our web site sales page.

For years I considered long line training to be something that wasdone to introduce young horses to the bit after initial ground workbut before introducing saddle work; or as a means of teaching olderhorses to pull carts and wagons. After meeting Enrique Carranzaand having him work with a number of our older horses both under saddle and in the long lines, I discovered how useful longline work is in re-training older horses who may already be in the saddle but who are experiencing a variety of commonproblems. My wife Becky and I currently have a number of Peruvian Paso horses that she and I and our Junior Riders haveshown successfully over the years. Even though these horses are being shown, several of them exhibit problems such as car-rying their head too high, stiffness in the neck, shoulders and back and failure to fully round their backs and reach well underthemselves. All of these problems are correctable by a skilled rider from the saddle but what surprised me was that they can

also be corrected by a skillful handler from the ground using longlines. Often times these problems can be corrected more quickly andeasily from the ground because the horse does not have the interfer-ence of the weight of the rider and because the handler can easily seehow the horse is carrying its head and using its body. It does takeskillful handling of the lines and experience in positioning the han-dler’s body and use of the driving aids. Sr. Carranza honed theseskills during decades of working in the Arabian horse industry herein the Valley.

Pictured here is Sr. Carranza and RDD Querecotillo in four photo-graphs taken at our clinic by Mark Dillard, current President of theAmerican Saddlebred Association of Arizona. To see additional

Sheis my own breeding of old lines... Sierra is a Lancero/Solde Oro (CRR)/Florentino MSR great-granddaughter. Thephoto was taken at the San Juan Capistrano Swallows DayParade last month. The parade is one of the largest eques-trian parades in the county with over 500 horses. Thisyear, my club, the Victorian Roses Ladies Riding Society, not only won for best Historical Entry, we also won theSweepstakes Best Equestrian trophy. What a huge honor!

There are four Peruvian horses in our organization, two ofwhich are mine. Not everyone rides aside, but everyonewears a custom made 1880's dress. There is a blend ofbreeds of horses, ranging from a mini donkey, to Paints,Fox Trotters, Quarter Horses, an Oldenburg, Arabs andBelgian Drafts. Not only does our club represent riding, but we also have several drivers who drive elegant car-riages.

We have had four appearances in the Tournament ofRoses Parade and we will be riding in Del Mar this year atthe Musical Freestyle Evening on April 25. Tickets areavailable online. Please like our Facebook page and visitour website at victorianroses.org

Hello Fellow Paso Enthusiasts:

Last June, long-time Paso owner/breeder Pat DeSota died from cancer. At the time she had three Pasos. Iwas blessed to find a Paso owner/angel in Northern CA who offered to take the horses. This angel has pro-vided a loving home and the horses are doing great. Unfortunately, this angel can no longer keep them. I amlooking for a person or organization that can give three older Peruvian Pasos a home. It would be nice ifthey could stay together, but not required.

Diosa is a 16 year old chestnut mare, Cory is a 17 year old bay gelding, and Ventada is a 18 year old chestnutmare. The three horses were trained to ride when young, but have been pet horses for many years. I don’tbelieve the mares are sound for riding. The gelding might be.

Thanks in advance for any leads you can give me!

Sincerely,

Did You Know?????The walk is the most common gait at which injuries occur. Rather than a gallop, lope, or even jog, the walk is the most common gait at which injuries occur. While speed does impact the severity of a fall, height also plays a crucial role in determining the injuries sustained.Head injuries are cumulative. This means that a minor concussion can turn into permanent brain damage if not rehabilitated properly. Brains are able to heal, but time off is essential in order to keep you safe and healthy. There is no statistical correlation between rider skill and accident likelihood. Every person who rides a horse is equally as likely to fall off as one another. No matter how much riding experience you have or how little for that matter, accidents are unpredictable and can happen to anyone.

By sharing these few facts, it is hoped you have gained some new knowledge about the importance ofwearing a helmet. Neither science nor people can predict the effects of riding horses. While it can be saidthat riding horses positively impacts your life, it can also be said that you can positively impact your ownlife by choosing to always ride with a helmet.

News about the Los Amigos Peruvian Paso Club

Two Crazy Horse Girls Who Rescued 8 Peruvian HorsesMarilyn Doud & Yvonne Powers

In mid-August of 2014, information appeared onFacebook about a group of Peruvian Horses thatwere to be sold at the Cowtown Auction in Turlock,CA on August 16th. Owners and supporters of ourwonderful horses were outraged, and many ex-pressed interest in helping to make sure they went togood homes. Yvonne, who lives near Turlock, didsome detective work and found out that nine of themwere sold to a man who routinely buys horses atlocal auctions. He had sold one, but by the timeYvonne was able to talk to him, he still had eight.Yvonne contacted Marilyn, who lives in Stockton, and we agreed that because we lived far closer to thehorses’ location than anyone else, we needed to res-cue them, as we feared they might be sold forslaughter. On Tuesday, August 19th, we went to anaddress in Turlock provided by the buyer of the horses to see them and make arrangements to purchase them. As we weresitting at a 4-way stop about a half mile from our destination, a stock trailer full of horses turned in front of us. A beautiful

grey horse (soon to be known as #5Grey Mare) was looking out the backof the trailer, and we just knew theywere the Peruvians. It turned out wewere right, and when we arrived, thehorses were unloaded into a corral, where they ran around frantically forabout three laps before slowing downand looking for food. They ran awaywhen we approached them, and ap-peared to be very frightened. We pur-chased the horses, six mares and twoyoung stallions, and they were deliv-ered to Yvonne and Mike Powers’ranch the next day. We especiallywant to thank Mike for leaping intoaction when he found out we’d bought

8 horses, and they were coming . . . tomorrow! He moved cattle, horses, and fence panels to make a safe enclosure for thehorses, and continued to rearrange fences as needed when we had to separate the colts from the mares. Throughout thisprocess, Kelly Powers was a huge help, providing us with advice on how to care for and handle the horses, sending sup-plies and equipment, setting up our website to accept donations, and generally providing moral support.

Our first concern was the horses’ physical condition. They were thin, and needed their feet trimmed, lots of scrapes andwounds; but all of them appeared to be sound. They were given as much hay as they could eat, and they began to gainweight. Several friends and family members who love Peruvian horses responded from across the United States and Can-ada with moral and financial support.

From the very beginning Tammy Horne and her daughter Ashley Horne Luisotti came out to the ranch and worked withthe horses, spending time just being with them and assuring them we were not going to hurt them. Tammy was the first towork with #2 Chestnut Mare, and Ashley spent long hours just talking to the two young stallions. She successfully haltered#3 Bay Stallion within a few days and was able to pick up his feet. He was the first to be trimmed and to find a foreverhome.

The day after the horses arrived, Martha Brosnan and her daughter Nicole, who are skilled in natural horsemanship, cameand worked with the horses so they would begin to trust humans again, and taught us how to use their training methods tobegin to handle the horses. We had many other angels who volunteered to help with the care and feeding of the horses. Ourfarrier Joe Terra, who has had previous experience working with rescue horses, did an excellent job. Plus, we could nothave done it without Chris Powers, who spent hours helping Mike with moving panels and picking up loads of hay.The transformation from terrified to trusting was truly amazing, and within about four weeks, most of the horses had beenhaltered, would stand still for grooming, and some had had their feet trimmed.

Two Crazy Horse Girls Who Rescued 8 Peruvian Horses (continued)Many questions have been asked about the horses’ breeding, ages, level of training, etc. We know that they are purebredPeruvian Horses, but have not been given any information about their ages or level of training. We know that they are noteligible for registration with NAPHA. However, the fact that they cannot be registered or shown has not deterred the manypeople who wanted a smooth trail horse, and were willing to commit to providing loving homes for these horses. The lasttwo left for their forever homes on March 5, 2015.

This has been an amazing learning experience for all of us. Wewould like to thank all the people, too numerous to list, who havegenerously donated money, feed, time and moral support to helpwith the care of the horses, and congratulate those who’ve steppedup and adopted one. We have been overwhelmed with the generos-ity and kind hearts of the people who have been following ourstory and expressed their love for this noble breed. We will postupdates on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/PeruvianRescuedAuctionHorses) about the horses as we receivethem from their new families.

The last horse to be adopted, a beautiful chestnut colt, went to anon-profit facility in Bend, Oregon that specializes in rehabilitat-ing horses who have suffered from physical and/or mental trauma, with a focus on Peruvian horses. They also have a youth programthat allows children to relate to the horses and gain confidence and coping skills. Our colt will be part of this program, andis already relating well to the program’s youthful volunteers. He needs to be gelded, and because he has one undescendedtesticle, the surgery will be complicated and costly. Donations are needed to fund his surgery, and we encourage anyonewho can spare even a small amount of money to make a tax-deductible donation by going to http://www.pasobypaso.org
