"A Review of the Challenges and Development of SMT, Wave and Rework Assembly Processes in the Electronics Industry"

The electronics assembly industry has been migrating from PTH to SMT over a number of years. This migration has seen a number of new components and technologies faced by the industry. The presentation will review issues and

developments related to SMT Assembly processes in terms of printing, reflow and test of components such as QFN/LGA/BTC, PoP, BGA/CSP and chip

components as well as equipment used to inspect during the assembly proc-ess. For wave soldering, the presentation will look at issues and development

related to wave holefill and for rework it will review BGA, Through-Hole and Hand soldering rework challenges and development and assess the solder

alloy choices for SMT, Wave and Rework.

Speaker Jasbir Bath, Christopher Associates/Koki Solder

Jasbir Bath is a Consulting Engineer for Christopher Associates/ Koki Solder in the Americas. He was the Corporate Lead Engineer with Solectron Corpo-

ration and Flextronics International for ten years with a role involving tin-lead and lead-free solder process development.

Lunch Free for All

11:45am to 12:45pm

Technical Session 2 1pm to 1:30pm

"Simple Steps to Trouble-Free Defluxing" You will learn practical ideas for efficient, productive, and profitable elec-

tronics assembly/defluxing processes. We'll explain cleaning processes rela-tive to fluxes, assembly design, and street-legal chemistry and process op-

tions. The emphasis will be on operating successfully, even in Southern Cali-fornia. Those of you involved in contract manufacturing/assembly will under-stand the best approaches to taking on new projects and to working with your supply chain. Barbara, "The Cleaning Lady" and Ed, "The Rocket Scientist"

will address your specific concerns throughout the Tech Forum.

Speakers Barbara Kanegsberg & Ed Kanegsberg, PhD

BFK Solutions LLC Barbara Kanegsberg and Ed Kanegsberg, PhD of BFK Solutions LLC are the industry leaders in critical cleaning consulting. They specialize in entertaining

programs that keep you awake and provide independent, practical informa-tion. Their decades of practical, hands-on experience in manufacturing and

their understanding of current and upcoming cleaning/defluxing options help manufacturers find cost-effect cleaning processes. They are active in IPC

cleaning and coating activities and contributed to the newly published IPC handbook, IPC-CH65B - Guidelines for Cleaning of Printed Boards and

Assemblies. Their defense/aerospace projects include the military/NASA JS3 Group. Their involvement in the medical device community includes ASTM standards and guidelines. They are editors of the new, expanded acclaimed 2-volume second edition of "Handbook for Critical Cleaning," CRC/Taylor &

Francis (2011).

Technical Session 3 2pm to 2:30pm

"Dynamic Production Planning" Production planners face many challenges in today's manufacturing. As more and more global regions move to high-mix with increasing volume produc-

tion, the planning task of running multiple products effectively through exist-ing assets and resources poses a significant scheduling challenge. In many factories an Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP) creates an initial production schedule. However, a tactical shop-floor schedule is needed to compensate for the real-time changes while ensuring products with similar

materials can be put together to minimize changeovers and optimize produc-tion flow. A review of the current available planning tools and new planning

tools will be provided.

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/kepler/overview/index.html The centuries-old quest for other worlds like our Earth has been rejuvenated by the intense excite-ment and popular interest surrounding the discovery of hundreds of planets orbiting other stars. There is now clear evidence for substantial numbers of three types of exoplanets; gas giants, hot-super-Earths in short period orbits, and ice giants. The challenge now is to find terrestrial planets (i.e., those one half to twice the size of the Earth), especially those in the habitable zone? of their stars where liquid water might exist on the surface of the planet. The Kepler Mission, NASA Discovery mission #10, is specifically designed to survey our region of the Milky Way galaxy to discover hundreds of Earth-size and smaller planets in or near the habitable zone? and determine the fraction of the hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy that might have such planets.

The Transit Method of Detecting Extrasolar Planets When a planet passes in front of a star as viewed from Earth, the event is called a “transit”. On Earth, we can observe an occasional Venus or Mercury transit. These events are seen as a small black dot creeping across the Sun—Venus or Mercury blocks sunlight as the planet moves between the Sun and us. Kepler finds planets by looking for tiny dips in the brightness of a star when a planet crosses in front of it—we say the planet transits the star. Once detected, the planet's orbital size can be calculated from the period (how long it takes the planet to orbit once around the star) and the mass of the star using Kepler's Third Law of planetary motion. The size of the planet is found from the depth of the transit (how much the brightness of the star drops) and the size of the star. From the orbital size and the temperature of the star, the planet's characteristic tem-perature can be calculated. From this the question of whether or not the planet is habitable (not necessarily inhabited) can be answered.

Kepler Instrument The Kepler instrument is a specially designed 0.95-meter diameter telescope called a photometer or light meter. It has a very large field of view for an astronomical telescope — 105 square degrees, which is comparable to the area of your hand held at arm's length. It needs that large a field in order to observe the necessary large number of stars. It stares at the same star field for the entire mission and continuously and simultaneously monitors the brightnesses of more than 100,000 stars for the life of the mission—3.5 or more years. The photometer must be spacebased to obtain the photometric precision needed to reliably see an Earth-like transit and to avoid interruptions caused by day-night cycles, seasonal cycles and atmospheric perturbations, such as, extinction associated with ground-based observing. Results from the Kepler mission will allow us to place our solar system within the context of plane-tary systems in the Galaxy.

LA/OC SMTA Member ProfileLA/OC SMTA Member Profile

Sisto is an Orange County native and developed an interest in computer science

during high school and joined the computer team, but was not your typical Egg Head.

He is a bit of a soccer fan and up until his knee surgery he played the sport frequently.

Sisto has always looked forward to watching the next major sporting event. This past

August he came out and enjoyed our LA/OC SMTA Golf Outing and had a wonderful

time.

After high school Sisto decided to serve his country and joined the Marine Corps

as a ground radio repairman. At his first duty station he jumped into the most difficult

support role of maintenance and troubleshooting of VHF Multi-channel communications

employed in the Hawk Missile defense system. This task was instrumental in develop-

ing his initial technical, troubleshooting, ingenuity, and root cause analysis skills. This

also helped with learning leadership and technical expertise that he was able to train

and pass on techniques by defining and developing procedures.

After military service Sisto tried various electronics fields, such as home entertain-

ment and optical vision, but eventually found a permanent stay at Viking. Sisto has

been able to continue with the technical and leadership support in rework processes,

SMT process, new product introduction, and proprietary stack component technology.

Supporting the design and engineering process has provided Sisto the opportunity

to learn manufacturing process engineering, and all his hard work paid off with a pro-

motion the position of Manufacturing Engineering. The SMTA & IPC has been instru-

mental in his learning process. Sisto has made his SMTA membership work for him by

taking advantage of the member networking, educational and tutorial programs, publi-

cations, the SMTA Process Engineer certification program, and the IPC-A-610 and IPC-

7711/7721 certification trainer courses. Sisto continues to educate himself through

SMTA and IPC educational events and hopes his example will motivate others to do the

same.
