The Lantern Dunn Loring Woods Civic Association PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The annual membership meeting was held on Tuesday, May 17th at 7:30 p.m. at Thoreau Middle School. The ballot was presented and the following officers were elected for 2011-2012: President, Ken Quincy; 1st Vice President, Melvin Rose; 2nd Vice President, Frank Piazza, and Recording Secretary, Penny Demo. Elfie Herlihy, Treasurer, will continue until someone steps forward. There were no nominations from the floor. I presented the Edward P. Day Memorial Citizenship Award to Bob Federico who won the award for 2010. Be sure to read the reminder about the deadline for the 2011 Edward P. Day Award on page 3. I also presented the first annual DLWCA scholarship to Orla Conway, who was a senior at Marshall High School. Orla is a talented musician who entertained us by playing the piano and singing an original song. Congratulations to Bob and Orla. Jeff Wagner and Jaime Breme from Fluor-Lane and VDOT shared information about the HOT LANES project which will affect anyone traveling from Springfield to Tysons Corner. We are in the midst of construction all around us. Several residents attended the update of the Merrifield Project earlier in May. Many residents enjoyed the great weather on May 21 for our community yard sale. To avoid the oppressive heat in June, we plan to continue having the yard sale in May in the future. June/July 2011 Orla Conway Wins First Annual DLWCA Scholarship Orla Conway, daughter of Peggy Pridemore and Keith Conway of Pepperdine Drive, is the winner of the First

Annual DLWCA Scholarship Award. Orla has performed at local venues such as Wolf Trap, Ford’s Theater, Jammin Java and Bangkok Blues. See Orla’s winning essay on page 2. How Living in the VA-DC-MD Area Has Helped Me Pursue My Goals - Orla Conway

My whole life I have loved performing. In elementary school I performed in school plays and chorus concerts but always wanted to do

something bigger. At such a young age I always thought the only people who really performed professionally were in New York on Broadway or on

television in Los Angeles. My parents were very aware of my desires so they started looking around the area for real acting opportunities, and I

soon found out that I didn’t need to go to New York or L.A. to start making my dream become a reality. I’m lucky enough to live in a metropolitan

area that just so happens to be a hub for music, visual, and performing arts. At the age of twelve I was able to audition for and receive the part of

the Ghost of Want in the Ford’s Theater production of A Christmas Carol. I was honored and ecstatic to have not only gotten the part, but to find

out that there were opportunities everywhere. From that point on I was constantly auditioning for theatre in my community and even started song

writing. I performed in anything I could find from community plays in Chantilly, Virginia to theater arts camp productions at the Institute for the

Arts at Robinson Secondary School, until in the summer of 2008 when I was cast in what I consider my greatest theatrical achievement. In our local

newspaper, the Falls Church News Press, my family and I found an open call for auditions for the traveling production of Les Miserables. A few

weeks later I was rehearsing and getting ready to perform as a teen chorus member in my favorite musical of all time. Since I had been accepted

into this traveling cast, I was able to perform in New York with them and at the Wolftrap Filene Center in Vienna, Virginia.

Living in the Virginia, DC, Maryland area gave me all of these opportunities and continued to give me access to stages as I started exploring a

new love for song writing. I had started going to a voice teacher in Maryland when I started acting professionally and she heavily supported my

original material and creativity. She recommended that I record one of my songs (her favorite) – and told me about a recording studio in

Springfield called The Art of Music. I was able to experience the recording environment and experiment with different recording techniques,

learning a new level of musical art. When I went into my junior year I got even more interested in song writing and performing my own music.

My parents and I started looking around for places that would allow me to perform my original works. Almost immediately we came across places

like The Soundry, Jammin Java, The Coffee House, and Bangkok Blues; some only a mile away from my house. Performing at these venues gave

me a lot of practice and confidence showing audiences my own personal style. Feeling what it was like to show people my raw creativity was the

spark that created my permanent dream to pursue being a singer/songwriter for the rest of my life. I kept performing around town and eventually

became a member of the Songwriter’s Association of Washington, which lead me to even more performing

opportunities and song-sharing events to help mold and perfect my song writing with helpful advice from

experienced adults. I’m still performing around the metropolitan area today and I’m an active member in my

high school theater.

I’m very thankful to live in an area so rich with opportunity for anyone who wants it. I can’t imagine

having the confidence to chase such a big dream if I lived anywhere else. Each small step I took and

opportunity I was granted helped me reach the ultimate goal in my young life: being accepted to the Berklee

School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Because of the bustling environment I grew up in, I’ll be able to

make my dream a reality and seriously make my life true love into a career.

Nominees shall be, or shall have been, a resident of Dunn Loring Woods during the period of service on which the nomination is based. Nominations will be accepted for two or more persons who cooperate in a single commendable contribution. Posthumous nominations will be accepted. SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection criteria to guide the deliberations of the Selection Committee shall be initially approved by, and when appropriate, subsequently amended by the Board of Directors. It is intended that the selection criteria and the name(s) of awardees be published prominently on a separate page of each future Directory of the Association. Nominees will be selected by applying one or more of the following unweighted criteria:

• Demonstrated leadership in and significant non-monetary contributions to activities that benefit Dunn Loring Woods;

• Presents a commendable role model of citizenship for other residents and youth of Dunn Loring Woods; • May be awarded for a continuing significant contribution(s) or an exemplary single action or activity

having a major impact on the Dunn Loring Woods community; • Contributions may be considered which benefit the wider Dunn Loring Woods community, e.g. Pool,

District Council, Federation, Fraternal Organizations, youth service organizations, a political party (ies), religious entities, etc.

• May not be awarded for paid services or contributions/services as an elected or appointed official of any governmental or quasi-governmental entity.

Summer is Here School is out and many people are on vacation or enjoying a break at home. Children are playing on the streets and riding bikes or enjoying an afternoon at the local pool. With more outdoor

activity, dogs have been seen running up the street without a leash. Remember to keep your dogs on a leash and always clean up after your dog. We’re told that unmowed lawns and unkempt areas are a sign to thieves that the owners are away, so reduce your risk of burglary by keeping your lawn mowed and areas tidy. Also, cancel your newspaper

and mail or ask a neighbor to pick them up for you. Thank you so much and have a safe summer.
