Vorwort
Was bietet Ihnen das Begleitheft?

MR _ I thought he could kick off the meeting with a thirtyminute talk, then we could break for fifteen minutes before continuing with the agenda.
PC _ Which item would you start off with? PC _ Mit welchem Punkt würdest du anfangen?
MR _ Well, the relocation is going to be a slightly thorny issue, so I thought we should start with this quarter’s figures and then cover fore casts and targets. All of those are positive and should create an upbeat note.
PC _ Until the issue of relocation comes up! PC _ Bis wir zum Thema „Umzug“ kommen!MR _ I don’t think they’ll see it as such a
negative thing. We are doing so well and the future is looking good. Relocating is a natural step to take.
PC _ In that case, we might as well leave it until the end and cover new customers and the sales managers first.
MR _ No, I don’t think that’s the right order. If the team feel even a little negative about the relocation, suggesting new sales managers might make them think we’re replacing them.
MR _ Nein.
PC _ Hmm. How about leaving the new custom ers until the end? We need to give the team a sense of being valued.
PC _ Hm.
MR _ Yes, I think that’s the right order. So, the agenda will be … guest speaker, quarterly figures, targets and forecasts, new sales managers, relocation and new customers. Have I got everything?
MR _ Ja, das ist die richtige Reihenfolge. So, die Tagesordnung ist also … Gastredner, Quartalszahlen, Ziele und Prognosen, neue Verkaufsleiter, Umzug und Neukunden. Habe ich alles?

PC _ Guess you’re right, Mary. So what does that give us now?
PC _ Ja, Mary, wahrscheinlich hast du recht. Also, was haben wir bis jetzt?
MR _ So far we have … quarterly figures, targets and forecasts, new customers and recruitment of additional sales managers for Eu rope and the US.
PC _ We should add relocation to those, which will give us five items. Where do you intend starting?
PC _ Den Umzug sollten wir auch mitzählen. Dann haben wir fünf Punkte. Mit welchem willst du beginnen?
MR _ Before we launch into our meeting, I would like to bring in a guest speaker to talk about market expansion. I’ve heard him speak at a dinner I went to and he’s very inspirational.

Here we listen in as Mary Robbins of Frontpoint Communications has some exciting news to deliver to the sales team, which consists of Clare, Paul and Ben, at their annual meeting …
Frontpoint has had its best year yet. The indus try has expanded rapidly from a shaky start two years ago. More new clients are being signed up, giving Frontpoint significant market share.

CJ _ Do you think we can maintain that rate?
MR _ I don’t believe the market has reached saturation point, although it’s difficult to predict. Our competitors are catching up fast, with Montano leading the pack.
PC _ I understand Montano has been courting Robinsons recently.
MR _ Yes, we mustn’t become complacent. Any slip on our part and someone will fill the gap.
BA _ Mary, what would you say are the biggest risks for us over the coming year?
MR _ Hmm … I would say … losing our people to our competitors – their skills are constantly in demand. And secondly, failing to deliver either because we have overstretched ourselves or are resting on our laurels.

1. Why may Japanese people have their eyes closed? Japanese people may have their eyes closed because this is a sign of concentration.2. What could failing to understand local etiquette result in? SL _ Certainly. Western speakers can fall into the trap of assuming a Japanese audience to be asleep. Whilst they may have their eyes closed, this is more likely to be a sign of concentra tion.
SL _ Gewiss.
CJ _ So it wouldn’t mean they were bored?
SL _ Not at all, and if you assumed this to be the case, you would be caught off guard when the questions start …
BA _ What do you think are the main pitfalls for inexperienced managers when working abroad?
SL _ The biggest danger is a complete lack of awareness of how other cultures function. Failing to understand local etiquette is likely to result in more than embarrassment; it will probably carry a heavy business cost in terms of lost contracts.
BA _ Isn’t there a danger we could become too inhibited for fear of offending people?
SL _ Having an awareness is not the same as being an expert. If we learn to interpret the cues, we can respond accordingly. Let’s consider personal space. Not only does it vary from one culture to another, we also need to consider the difference between urban and rural communities.
PC _ What does that mean in practical terms for us?
PC _ Was bedeutet das praktisch für uns?
SL _ As an urban Brit, your personal space is prob ably between two to three feet. As a rural American, it’s potentially much greater – perhaps six feet or more. As an urban Japanese, it’s probably around one foot. So an urban Japanese meets a rural American and a “dance” ensues as each tries to get a comfortable distance from the other … These are the kind of cues that you quickly need to become aware of …

i Is mentoring a new fad? Mentoring is becoming big business, both in the US and the UK. It creates personal time for a manager to discuss his or her development with someone who can act as a sounding board. It is used to nurture the skills of those starting out in business, indi viduals entering management roles for the first time, through to senior managers approaching retirement.
