Landscape Architecture: Dedicated, Diverse and Probing Faculty

Though small, the faculty’s interests and expertise range across a broad group of topical areas, with intersections of scale, philosophy and experience. The assembled faculty brings diversity in culture, education and ethnicity to the MLA program. With four women and three men of socially and economically diverse backgrounds the faculty engage the students in a broad array of interests. The educational and teaching background of the faculty is also diverse, with professional and advanced degrees from seven institutions (Harvard University, Duke University, University of Massachusetts, Arizona State University, University of Southern California, California State Polytechnic, and The Ohio State University). Teaching experience has been gained in the eastern, southern, and western U.S.; professional and scholarly experience has been gained in the Netherlands, Korea, China, Thailand, and Europe. This gives the faculty a firsthand connection with diverse colleagues and a range of cultures, economies and environmental issues at national and international levels.

With research interests in history, theory and criticism, site design, regional planning, urbanism, sustainability, ecology and environment, advanced materials, technology, culture and social responsibility, the group individually and collectively informs one another while providing counterpoint(s) within a vibrant faculty dialog. Senior faculty who have familiarity with the institution and the ‘heritage’ core curriculum anchor the program’s exploration of new initiatives; an array of research grants, publications, participation in international design competitions and built work has enriched the faculty’s professional and scholarly activities which in turn informs their teaching. Together the faculty balance the mission of an urban, Research 1, Land Grant University with development of a freshly framed curriculum capable of producing a benchmark program in the field.

A Spectrum of Experience

Professors Simpson and Georg each have over twenty-five years teaching experience, while Amidon, Kentner and Lara each have between eight to fourteen years of experience gained in multiple institutions (Harvard GSD, Arizona State University, The Ohio State University, University of Arizona, New Mexico, University of Texas Austin, and University of Southern California). Three faculty members have international teaching experience in five regions (Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Central Europe, China, and Southeastern Asia). Three of the regular faculty are tenured; one junior faculty member is now in the 4

th year review process, and a second will follow in 2011. Assistant Professors Bennett and

Cowles each bring significant professional experience and emerging research agendas. With the most recent hires in 2010, the faculty has a strong complement of experience and energy to move new and emerging research agendas forward. With the staggering of junior faculty hires the program can build and mentor new faculty as it continues to engage and refine the curriculum to respond to the importance of public space, urban greenspace and the environment and the dynamic changing needs of society. Through staggering junior faculty hires, the program is able to build and mentor new faculty.

The faculty share a commitment and dedication to the Section’s mission and teaching objectives. Of particular interest is the frequency with which colleagues in other disciplines are brought in to the classroom to enrich the learning experience. For example, Assistant Professor Kentner brings in Doctoral students in environmental engineering to do charrettes in his Water in the Landscape class as well as professionals; Associate Professor Georg links her participation in outreach initiatives such as the Urban Landscape Ecology Program (ULEP) and Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed (FLOW) to studio research topics; Professor Simpson incorporates area professionals from designers to developers into his land planning exercises; Assistant Professor Lara integrates his work on the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis Grant into graduate seminars on healthy communities and plans to continue with these endeavors as a member of the International Poverty Solutions Center at OSU; Assistant Professor Sarah Cowles’ work in social justice expressed in film, exhibits and seminars brings participation in outreach to the communities and into the cultural dialog; Assistant Professor Katherine Bennett continues to develop work and outreach projects in

Korea and Mongolia; and Associate Professor Amidon brings visiting leaders of the profession into studio for feedback on student work and continues her work in the History and Theory of Contemporary landscapes. All of these actions are a direct reflection of priorities grounded in the program mission, specifically:

To educate students in the critical inquiry, design and technology of landscape architecture in the 21st

century;

To provide a strong foundation of professional landscape architectural training balanced with opportunities for innovation and scholarly work in landscape research, planning, design, management and communication methods;

To generate and disseminate landscape architectural professional and intellectual knowledge to serve public, professional and academic communities.

To guide students in integrating skills and knowledge from their undergraduate degree and life experiences into future career paths.

Active Contributors

Both full time and auxiliary faculty are productive members of their professional and scholarly communities, actively contributing knowledge to the profession. Professor Simpson published Dam! Water, Power, Politics in 2005, a well reviewed consideration of the Hetch Hetchy dam controversy. In 2008 Professor Georg led the field research which was foundation for the published the Sand Beach Master Plan with auxiliary faculty member Vincent Bednar and City & Regional Planning Professor Jennifer Cowley as well as the Landscape Action Plan for North Longbeach and Pineville, Harrison County Mississippi in collaboration with Assistant Professor Lara , Associate Professor Cowley and students. She also led a ULEP charrette Studio in 2008 for an Edible Landscape Demonstration Project in conjunction with the Wooster Community Hospital. Professor Amidon has presented numerous lectures in the past five years, including presentations at universities (Minnesota, Illinois, Ball State, Berkeley, Colorado and conferences (Second Wave of Modernism and International Garden Symposium, both 2008) and has edited the initial Landscape SourceBook Series, framing the discussion and critical review of works by contemporary leaders in the field. Professor Kentner has been a finalist on a team in the internationally recognized design competition: Flight 93 Memorial (2004-5) and recipient of an Honorable Mention (with his collaborator, Karen Lewis) of the Boston Architect’s Massachusetts Bay WindScapes Competition (2005-2006) and the Bronx Grand Concourse Competition. Professor Lara has received the CURA grant to investigate connections between Public Health and Open Space, is a member of the Provost’s funded Center for Poverty Solutions (competition 2008-2009 ). Assistant Professor Lara presents frequently, including peer-reviewed venues such as CELA, ACSP and EDRA as well as at professional conferences across North America and around the world. Assistant Professor Katherine Bennett continues to pursue work in collaboration with the University of Seoul and her work in Mongolia. Assistant Professor Cowles continues her work in exhibitions and landscape investigations curating and designing "Fence Ditch Repeat", El Paso Texas, and the “Monuments of Columbus” at the Battelle/OSU Urban Arts Space as well as being an Invited panelist Roy G. Biv Gallery Talk, "2012".

Auxiliary faculty active in scholarly pursuits and original contributions to the profession include: Lecturer Jake Boswell’s presentation at CELA in 2008 and his collaboration with fellow lecturer Jason Brabbs in “Drifts, Debris, Deposits“ as part of the “Monuments of Columbus” exhibition; Karla Trott’s work (with Jane Amidon and Jonathan Barnes Architects) in the Whittier Design Competition 2006 gained an finalist award; lecturer Charles Cartwright published the paper “Public Perception of Productive Land Uses” in the EDRA 2006 proceedings.

CONTRIBUTIONS: Briefly describe your involvement in advancing the knowledge or capability of the profession of landscape architecture in the last five years: In the last five years I’ve focused on participating in design competitions and presentations that are all very public in nature while also speaking directly to professional colleagues in landscape architecture and allied professions. Design competitions have provided a platform for me to position landscape within the general public’s attention while presentations at professional conferences/meetings have allowed me to add to the dialog surrounding landscape and issues of sustainability.

CONTRIBUTIONS: Briefly describe your involvement in advancing the knowledge or capability of the profession of landscape architecture in the last five years: My teaching, research, and community service emphasize a social consciousness that focuses on the improvement of the built environment as a generator of social capital. This approach creates an academic agenda that seeks the balance between social, cultural and ecological needs. My interdisciplinary education and professional experience allow me to draw from other areas, and enables me to work in diverse teams and settings. I expect to continue to contribute to both theoretical investigations and applied research projects involving designs and policy strategies through collaborative design and community participation towards the creation of social capital and “Healthy Cities”. These endeavors will contribute to my teaching activities, and I plan to publish research findings and stay articulated in different media. In addition, I see myself having a critical role in the promotion and creation of international research and academic collaboration with universities in other countries. Currently I have an established network with colleagues in universities in Mexico, Colombia, and the Netherlands with whom I have worked in the past and continue to engage in research and teaching collaborations.
