jApAN eMBAssy orgANises judo deMoNstrAtioN

A Judo demonstration was organised by the Embassy of Japan and Qatar Taekwondo & Judo Federation at the Landmark Mall which was witnessed by an audience of more than 300 people of all ages. Judo is a Japanese

martial art created in 1882 which is also an official Olympic sport and played all over the world.

The event began with a brief explanation on Judo by Maher Al-Srarfi, a Judo coach of the Federation and Hajime Kojima, a teacher in the Japan School of Doha and also a Judo player. The demonstration consisted of two parts – the Children’s session and the Adult’s session in which 28 Judo players from the Federation and Qatar University Judo Club including three Japanese players showed their Judo techniques. At the end, all the Judo players received certificates from HE Ambassador Yukio Kitazume in appreciation of their participation in the event.

QteL’s ‘Big drop’ sees huge respoNse

Q tel’s ‘Big Drop’ event gathered nearly four tonnes of electronic waste in a single day, as people came

from across Qatar to safely dispose and recycle electronics and household goods. The event was organised to provide the community with a facility to dispose off larger e-waste items for recycling. Qtel provided a number of special recycling bins for people to leave their e-waste in the car-park of Landmark Mall in Doha, and in two shifts – one in the afternoon and the other in the evening for convenience.Among the most popular items left for recycling were old computer monitors and printers – more than 120 monitors were deposited during the day. Equally, a high number of old computers and batteries were submitted for recycling. With the ‘Big Drop’ programme, these electronics will be shipped to a Basel Convention Certified recycling facility in Singapore and safely repurposed.

FiLM FestivAL For chiLdreN

A t this year’s ‘Children’s Film Festival’ at Landmark Mall, children got to enjoy four of the latest animation films from July 28-31, 2010. The festival was organised by the Qatar Cinema and Film Distribution Company in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage.

The four-day festival featured one film every day in three shows. Entry was free for children and their parents.

s pain’s most international fashion brand – Mango presented its new womenswear and menswear collections for Autumn/Winter 2010 at the Cıragan Palace Kempinski in Istanbul. Opening the runway was the British born model

and actress Poppy Delevingne, who also played host for the event. Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad who has been collaborating with Mango since 2005, attended as a special guest. His collection Mango by Zuhair Murad, has met with international success.

The collection is a refreshing take on British classic country style – trench coats, double-breasted jackets and well-tailored coats, without forgetting both basic and thicker chunky handmade knits.

Drawn towards the 70s era, rich textures of tweeds, corduroy and furs, combined with flowing silks and gold highlights, create a contrast between masculine and feminine, giving a new meaning to wardrobe classics. Playing with proportions, this collection emphasises the waist, combines flowing blouses with structured outerwear, and brings longer skirts and wider trousers. A perfect combination between elegant and traditional camel, grey and navy blue forms the base for this season’s colour palette, with hints of more country-inspired tones such as warm browns and winter reds.

The menswear comprises the first line City Workers – wool fabrics, tweed on blazers with greys and blues creating a semi-uncoordinated look. While the second line Retro Mountain is a casual and relaxed look with classics like cheviots and checked flannel with shades of green, camel, pumpkin and mustard.

Cargo and military shapes are reduced for women, transformed into lean, graceful shapes. Skinny pants and sleek leggings give comforting pieces while textured wools warm up cool silk separates. t he Reiss men’s collection centres on the essence of dressing by focusing on product, craft and culture. Details define Reiss tailoring as a cut above the rest. The sharp, slick suits are designed to create a visually elongated, slimmer, sexier silhouette. Every detail has been scrutinised from the shape and length of the jackets to the adjustments

made to the shoulder, the darting, the pocket flaps, the labels and button height. Quality fabrics range from super 130s, wool flannels, mohair wool blends and wool silk blends.

New volume comes from puffer jackets, while parka style outerwear and quilted blazers create great layering pieces. Hemlines drop this season with skirts moving to a longer, leaner A-line and full-length day and evening dresses are introduced. Trousers are plentiful, from luxe slouch to skinny leg with a strong focus on the flattering ankle skimmer. Dresses take on a new look with elegant eveningwear worn as daywear and skirts taking on a more voluminous fluidity. For the colour palette, new luxury shades work their way into the collection, beginning with pearl, mink and blush reinforced by camel, fawn and biscuit which provide aesthetic warmth. Colour mixes with texture – animal prints work alongside lace and gold foil snakeskin prints while sparkle finishes work their way into denim complete with metal embellished components.

Damas is one of the best jewellery store in Qatar with lots of lovely engagement rings, and breath-taking gold pieces. One of this season’s key trends is the gold factor, where you stack lots of gold accessories and jewellery over each other. With the great gold pieces Damas is offering, you’ll be more than ready for this season. The magazine favourite brands were both Italian, Graziella and Marco Bicego. They have the most astonishing statement rings, bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. You must always check what’s new at Damas, because you’ll never know when you’ll find that amazing piece of jewellery you always dreamt of, like this amazing gold dragon bracelet with the diamond details.

As for Spring/Summer 2010, they launched a floral collection, and it came as platforms and flat sandals. I found the flat sandals great for a summer maxi dress. But if you’re looking for statement shoes, there are many different styles available, in many different shades. Go for a hot-pink or navy heels; they will give your outfit a whole new fashionable dimension! Landmark’s pick is from the latest collection – the nude and the black suede wedges with gold and silver details. Those are way too pretty, and they give that extra height every woman is aiming for. You must try them out, every woman should own at least one pair of a fashion-forward wedges. We also recommend the tie-die pumps, those are with shorter wide heels, and full of vibrant colours.
