Informal settlements - 638 pockets Informal Settlements - 262 000 families Backyard shacks - 47 000 families Traditional dwellings - 97 000 families TOTAL - 408 000 Currently 162 Informal settlements upgrades are underway. Addressing 89 000 families. 22837 Houses completed from 2011.
DELIVERY AGAINST BACKLOGS
Transit camps (facilities) There were 64 originally Transit Camps
citywide, consisting of 10140 units.
595 persons have been relocated and 374 units demolished. 3 Transit Camps eradicated thus far.
There are 61 Transit Camps remaining to date city wide.
9766 units still remain occupied by families.
A plan for each transit camp has been devised.
Causes of land invasions in eThekwini
Huge Backlog (families have grown since 1994).
Influx of people looking for job opportunities.
Shack landlords ( Shack Farming)
Casualty in dealing with land invasions.
Decided cases in dealing with Land invasions.
Prevention of Illegal Evictions Act.
The role of Human Settlements Monitor by visiting the settlements
Identify new shacks that are not numbered
Mark new shacks by spraying X on them.
Report new shacks by phoning and sending emails to Protection team leaders.
Wait for response from Protection Services.
On the agreed date and meeting point, Support will accompany Protection to the settlement and assist by identifying shacks to be demolished.
During the weekend Protection can visit reported areas and execute their demolishing work.
