President’s Message by Joseph Zdarsky
Dear Members,
After playing golf in 45 degree temperatures with a 20 mile an hour wind again this week, I
am looking forward to a real spring in a big way. Unfortunately, if you want to maximize
the golf season in Buffalo, you need a good cold weather game (or at least several layers
of clothing). Think Scotland. Our wonderful golf course, however, is in mid-season form.
Gary Powers and his crew have done a great job shaping up the grounds. The new inter-
mediate cut in the rough and the Hogan paths leading from the tee to the fairway pre-
sent a classic finished look, and the greens are putting true and fast.
Some of the new tee boxes look ready to play, and as I write this note the new collection
areas beside Holes 6 and 8 are being installed. It will be interesting to see the impact on
play at those holes. For example, I can see tee shots on number 8 rolling off the green a
good distance down the extended collar-length grass west of the green. The feedback I
have received is that we made the correct decision to play all the greens “as-is” and to
defer any resurfacing work until such time as playing conditions warrant such work. One
final note on the course is that the removal of some old diseased trees is barely noticea-
ble, since we still have many stately trees and wooded areas.
There is one critical observation. For some reason a few members fail to repair ball marks
or rake the sand traps after playing out of them. The players in my foursome are regular
visitors to the bunkers, and we find numerous footprints throughout traps, not raked. It
takes only a few seconds to repair a ball mark or leave a trap in proper condition for the
people following you. As a matter of common courtesy, please rake traps and repair ball
marks. By the way, some of you may have noticed that the bunkers are being “ringed” by
the crew this year, with the sand around the edge of the bunker being raked vertically to
the lip around the bunker to finish it off. It is a nice touch by Gary and his staff.
I have enjoyed excellent meals prepared by or under the supervision of our new Executive
Chef, Ryan McCormick, and have received very favorable reports from others as well. I
like the new menu, and the weekly specials have been different from routine “meat and
potatoes.” GM Mark Maier and Food and Beverage manager Ed O’Donnell have
brought in a number of new servers, and they are settling in and becoming familiar with
the membership. The interior finishes to complete the revamped clubhouse are progress-
ing. Things are falling into place and I anticipate a successful season.
The month of May will bring several club events, such as the Mother’s Day Brunch, the
Member-Member Tournament and the beginning of league play. We were pleased that
everyone who wanted to participate in the league was able to register. The Member-
Member is always a popular weekend, and Mother’s Day is usually a sellout. Register ear-
ly. Enjoy your club by using it, bringing your guests and attending as many functions as you
can. I look forward to seeing you on the course.

Updates from the Grounds Department
All the new tee decks are complete along with the two collection areas on six and eight greens. These new areas will need time to grow in before we open them for play. We will put ball retrievers out on the two collection areas to re-move a ball hit onto the collection areas while we grow them in. Please refrain from walking on and playing off these areas until they are fully knitted in.
The cool weather has slowed growth down on all our turf. The bentgrass on our fairways still hasn’t broken dorman-cy; this is the reason why some fairways may still look off-color to you. Once we start receiving warmer weather you will start to see fairways green up. I also think you will see even more definition in our intermediates and rough once the rough starts to grow a bit more.
This year we will introduce a new way to mark the point where I would like you to exit the fairways near the greens. We will be using small decorative four by four posts to mark the exit area instead of cart signs. Once the posts are complete I will have a picture of them outside the pro shop to clarify how we will use them. We are also in the pro-cess of getting the yardage markers made for our sprinkler heads out in the fairways. I hope to have them on by the end of the month.
We made our first application of Round Up to the weeds in bunkers. This will be a weekly application until they are all gone. Each week you should see less and less of them in and around our bunker edges. We also have started to address weeds in the rough and will continue to spray for them when the weather permits us to do so. The range tee will be aerified this week weather permitting and we will open the tee up this weekend. I held off the aerification on it due to the low temperatures which would prolong the heal in time and prevent any seed from germi-nating.
Manager’s Notes by Mark A. Maier
Each month our members will have an opportunity to select and recognize Lancaster Country Club’s “Member of the Month”
for his or her contribution to and support of the Club. From your nominations we will choose the member who exemplifies the
qualities that help make LCC a friendly, productive, and progressive golf club.
We are fortunate to have so many wonderful members! You can probably think of a member right away who displays a posi-
tive, “can-do” attitude… one who is pleasant to staff, friendly to fellow members, and supportive of club events. Whether they
are outgoing members who always take the time to introduce themselves to new members, or less visible members who work
tirelessly behind-the-scenes, hosting events or supporting membership through referrals, we’d like to show our appreciation to
them.
The Member of the Month will be given a reserved parking space for the month, and will also be featured in the monthly news-
letter.
If you would like to nominate a member for this award, please submit their name and a couple of short paragraphs explaining
why you believe they should be chosen Member of the Month. Send your nominations by the 15th of the month to
[email protected] for the following month’s consideration. Who do you know who:
-participates regularly in Club events?
-stays involved by regularly attending general meetings, voting, and offering positive ideas for Club improvement?
-invites guests to experience LCC? [social events, golf events, pool, referrals]
-helps integrate new members into the Club?
-always speaks positively about their club, the members and staff?
-donates their time, talents, or resources to improve the Club?
-is an ambassador of LCC?
We appreciate your feedback and look forward to hearing from you with your nominations.

Driving Range Update - As the 2016 season kicks off, I wanted to touch base on how the range hours will work for this year. Once a week, the golf course staff mows the entire landing area of the range. In order for them to do this without cutting up our ball inventory, we need to clean pick the entire range the night before meaning the range would need to close early on this day. After reviewing what we have tried in the past, scheduled Member events/leagues and Member feedback we have received over the past season, we feel Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning will be the best time to accomplish this task. Starting Monday May 2nd, the driving range will close at 2pm so the staff can begin the process of clean picking all the range balls off the range. The range will reopen Tuesday morning immediately after grounds is completed cutting the entire range. Depending on when they are able to start, the typically reopen time will be in the 9am-10am area. This will continue until late September, early October when the cutting becomes less frequent. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact me in the golf shop anytime.

F & B NEWS by Edward O’Donnell
Here we are in May looking at some mild temperatures and a chance to get out and enjoy a little BBQ. Now pairing wines with the strong flavors of wood smoked meats covered in char grilled sweet sauces can be difficult if you like white wine. But for the reds there are a few that stand up to the challenge. Now for something like grilled vegetables and spicy sausage anything with a little zip like a red zinfandel will go great with its peppery undertones, nice and balanced acidity and a little fruit like blackberry mixes in nicely. Now for the big game, slow smoked brisket and ribs, this is going to need something that is a little more complex, just like the preparation of the meat, dry rubbed for a couple days, then smoked with mesquite or maybe a little Applewood, then covered in a tangy mop (BBQ SAUCE) of spice, sugar and vin-egar and grilled over an open flame of charcoal . A perfect wine for this masterpiece would be Michael David 6th Sense Syrah, it opens up with some black raspberry and blueberry, then comes in with some tobacco, plum, rosemary and cedar, with a nice dry finish, and those flavors will be able to hang around for a while. That’s all I have for this month, look for grilling fish next month so we can give some of the white wines some publicity.
Executive Chef Ryan McCormick
We are really starting to ramp up the season here at LCC and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of it. So far I have had a very warm welcome from all staff and members, and it has been very much appreciated. Going forward, we have a new summer menu out so I hope everyone will come out and check out some of the new items we have to offer. Dishes such as the Pesto Chicken Pasta, which is Grilled Chicken over penne pasta with vegetables and a Pesto Cream sauce, or the Caprese Salmon, which is Grilled Salmon over a Tomato Basil Risotto topped with a Balsamic Glaze, are just some of the great new dishes we have on the menu. Our new Friday salad bar has been a hit so far, with more toppings, fresh bread, and a featured hot item every week. For the golfers we have been fea-turing a special item at the halfway house every weekend so please ask one of the staff members what the special of the week is.
