July 12, 2015 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
...take nothing for the journey but a walking stick.
Today we see the Twelve being sent out two by two to be essentially homeless people. Generally when we plan a trip we make our reservations or arrangements for where to sleep at night and where we might eat our three squares, a restroom every two hours is always a plus for any itinerary. Were the disciples scared? Mark does not indicate so and in fact shortly later in Mark’s Gospel the Twelve return and are practically bubbling over with joy to report to Jesus all they had done and taught. So why are we resistant to put all our trust in the will of the Father? It doesn’t seem smart to go and not make plans but the plans were already made for the Twelve by Jesus. He has a plan for you as well, it may not be as drastic as to walk away from our homes with just the clothes on our backs and shoes on our feet, but it is as simple as going forth and proclaiming the Gospel as we are reminded to do at the end of every Mass. This can be accomplished with simple kindness and attention to all people.

Hoy vemos a los Doce ser enviados de dos en dos a ser vagabundos esenciales. Generalmente cuando planeamos un viaje hacemos nuestras reservaciones en el lugar en donde vamos a dormir en la noche y tal vez en donde vamos a comer nuestras tres comidas, un baño cada dos horas es siempre un plus para cualquier itinerario. Estaban espantados los discípulos? Marcos no nos indica eso de hecho un poco después en el Evangelio de Marcos los Doce regresan y están prácticamente charlando con júbilo para reportar a Jesús todo lo que hicieron y enseñaron. Entonces porque nos resistimos a poner toda nuestra confianza en la voluntad del Padre? No parece ser algo inteligente ir y no hacer planes pero los planes ya estaban hechos para los Doce por Jesús. Él tiene un plan para ti también, tal vez no es tan drástico como irnos de casa con solo ropa en nuestras espaldas y zapatos en nuestros pies, pero si es tan simple como caminar hacia adelante y proclamar el Evangelio tal y como se nos recuerda que hagamos al final de cada Misa. Esto puede ser logrado con atención y gentileza a todas las personas.

Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel July 16 This feast was instituted by the Carmelites between 1376 and 1386.The feast was assigned to 16 July, be-cause on that date in 1251, according to Carmelite traditions, the scapular was given by the Blessed Virgin to St. Simon Stock ; it was first approved by Sixtus V in 1587. After Cardinal Bellarmine had examined the Carmelite traditions in 1609, it was declared the patronal feast of the order, and is now celebrated in the Carmelite calendar as a major double of the first class with a vigil and a privileged octave. Some Carmelite monasteries keep the feast on the Sunday after 16 July, or on some other Sunday in July. The object of the feast is the special predilection of Mary for those who profess themselves her servants by wearing her scapular.
