Join the City of Lakeway for an exciting July 4th Celebration, featuring its 41st annual parade and pageant celebrating this year’s theme of “Ignite the Spirit of America.”

The parade will begin at 8:30 a.m. July 4 at the Live Oak Driving Range on Lakeway Drive and continue down Lakeway Drive, ending at Cross Creek Drive adjacent to the Lakeway Activity Center.

Heading the parade is Grand Marshal Anna-Brita Stevens who served in the Dutch Underground in World War II.

Parade participants are still being accepted, but some of the early entrants who have signed up are Lake Travis High School Cavalettes officers and cheerleaders, the Lake Travis Fiddlers and the mighty Wells Fargo Stagecoach.

Adding to the excitement will be parade entries by H-E-B, All-Star Burger, Lexus of Lakeway, Sheehan Farmers Insurance, Brookdale Senior Living Solutions, Blood Center of Central Texas and Travis County Precinct 2 Constable Adan Ballesteros.

And let’s not forget Lakeway’s favorite civic groups of Dotties’ Follies, Lohmann’s Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Lakeway Church AWANA and Children’s Ministry, Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway, Lake Travis Community Library District Board, and many, many more. Loyd and Shelley Smith also will star in the parade as Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty.

“This year’s July 4th Celebration is sure to be a great event, so be sure to mark the date on your calendar,” said Andra Dearing, Parks and Recreation director and event chairwoman. “Encourage your friends and neighbors to fly the American flag gloriously up and down every street in Lakeway.”

Bill Dickson will be master of ceremonies, and Grand Marshal Stevens will give the keynote address. A free continental breakfast of coffee, doughnuts and juice is available to all before the pageant begins. The pageant is filled with songs, tales and stories highlighting the community’s gratitude to the military, both active and retired, for their service in defending the freedoms we all enjoy.

The Lake Travis Fiddlers and Lakeway Wildflowers will perform patriotic songs, and Lakeway resident Karl Ansbach will perform his rendition of “The Grand Old Flag.”

The Lakeway Swim Center will be open from noon to 8 p.m. so swimmers can have more time for an evening splash. Cost is $3 per person. Fireworks will not be a part of this year’s celebration.

Decades after the bravery and sacrifices of Americans helped win World War II, the soldiers’ sometimes steely reluctance to recount the atrocities of the front lines is understandable.

For Anna-Brita Stevens, the grand marshal for the City of Lakeway’s I n d e p e n d e n c e D a y Celebration on July 4, words are hard to come by to describe what she endured and witnessed.

Se ldom do younger generations have the opportunity to meet someone who has served in the Dutch Underground army during World War II and is willing to talk about it. Even when they do hear the stories, it’s hard for them to understand why the women who served would rather not relive that time.

So imagine, a young teenage girl in Rotterdam, terrorized as she watched and listened to the horrifying sounds and sights of the German Luftwaffe’s bombs raining down everywhere in her town as the Nazis invaded The Netherlands.

Anna-Brita Van Tussenbroek, (her maiden name) was born in Stockholm, Sweden, the daughter of Gysbert Van Tussenbroek and Johanna DeGraff on Nov. 18, 1927. The family moved to the Netherlands when Anna Brita was a year old, where she grew up in Rotterdam, a major port city off the North Sea.

The German army invaded the Netherlands on May 10, 1940 with plans of conquering its neighbor in one day. However, the Dutch army held them off several days before surrendering after the Nazis bombed Rotterdam and threatened to destroy other cities in the country. More than 800 people were killed and about 85,000 lost their homes when the Luftwaffe almost obliterated the city center in the Rotterdam Blitz.

According to Lakeway archivist Mike Boston who has spoken with Stevens about her role, she would have been anything but a passive observer as a resident of the Netherlands during the war. She was an active member of the Dutch Underground who relayed messages, gathered intelligence information and performed other support functions.

“The Royal Dutch government decided to honor the brave citizens who had served covertly in the Dutch Underground during the Nazi occupation by retroactively recognizing them as full members of the Dutch military and giving them the same veterans’ benefits as uniformed members,” Boston said.

the Lakeway Heritage Center learned of Stevens’ contributions to the war effort, they decided to add her name to the Spirit of Freedom veterans monument at the city’s Spirit of ’45 Commemoration last fall. Stevens also was recognized at the city’s Veterans Day in November 2015.

Stevens has carried these memories with her as she has traveled throughout the world, raised a family and settled in Lakeway.

After the war, Stevens moved to Switzerland and then Amsterdam where she attended the prestigious Gerrit Rietveld Academie of Applied Sciences for fine arts and design. Stevens also attended a secretarial school where she learned foreign languages. She is fluent in English, Dutch, German and French. Her international studies took her to Indonesia where she worked as a secretary and met and married her husband, Carroll Stevens, a native Texan from El Paso who developed management strategies for oil companies.

They married in Gibraltar in 1960, and his work took them all over the world, from Nigeria to Canada, the Caribbean to Indonesia to Spain, but they made time to raise two sons, Robert and Andrew, along the way.

Texas pulled on Carroll’s heart to come back home, and in 1961 the Stevenses moved to Houston where Anna-Brita enjoyed conversing with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines employees. Nigeria was their next stop from 1964 to 1967, but Carroll committed himself to his home state while they were in Africa. Stevens said that when her husband heard how beautiful Lakeway was he decided to see for himself. He flew to Lakeway and was so impressed with the area that he bought a house for the family.

In 1967, the family moved to Holland for nine months before returning to Houston. After a brief stay in Trinidad, they moved back to Texas – this time in San Antonio for about a year.

Their next move kept them in Texas when Carroll’s job took them to Dallas in 1971.

While in Dallas, Anna-Brita became an active volunteer with the city. She was asked to join the International Multi-cultural committee, because of the Sister City arrangement between Rotterdam and Dallas. As a member of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce, Stevens also served on its international committee. The mayor of Rotterdam at the time personally sent her a letter inviting her to the Holland Trade Dinner, in appreciation for her help with economic relations between the United States and Rotterdam’s city and port.

Her husband died in Dallas in 1982, but Stevens built a new house in Lakeway in 1986 and lived here ever since. One of the longest-tenured members of the city’s Quarter Century Club, she continues to support causes on fund-raising website Fundly.

Election of Lakeway Municipal Utility District (LMUD) Board of Directors was held on May 7, 2016. We wish to thank Kay Andrews for her 12 years of service, and Mel Neese for his 4 years of service. We deeply appreciate their commitment to helping LMUD achieve new heights.

Re-elected to the Board was Tom Brewer, who has served as a Director since June of 2011. We appreciate his willingness to devote another term of service. Newly elected Directors are Don Goff and Lawrence Christian. Goff has been Chairman of the Administrative, Personnel, and Community Relations Committee and has been active in improving each of those areas during his tenure. Christian has been the Chairman of our Finance Committee and has been instrumental in supporting the outstanding financial results LMUD has enjoyed in recent years. We congratulate all three Directors whose terms began at our Monthly Board Meeting on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, and we thank them all for their continued willingness to devote even more of their personal time to the betterment of LMUD.

A new Board is always a fresh start, and causes reflection on past events. We thought it might be interesting to look back on some of the historical happenings at LMUD. The first Board meeting was on August 28, 1971, and the new MUD was named “Travis County Municipal Utilities District No.1”. The second meeting was held on October 25, 1971, and the name was changed to “Lakeway Municipal Utility District No.1”.

Shortly after the second meeting, the City of Austin passed a resolution that LMUD could not furnish water or service to any customer in a sub division within LMUD unless it was approved by the Planning Commission of the City of Austin.

The third meeting took place on December 6, 1971. One of the highlights was a request from the Texas Department of Public Safety that sufficient space be planned in LMUD’s District Office to house two officers including desk space, storage, and a retaining cell for those arrested. The Board Members at that meeting seemed willing to consider that request, but there is no evidence it was ever mentioned again.

On September 3, 1971, LMUD received its first invoice; it was a bill from Harvey Smith, Surveyor, in the amount of $90. The charge was for 6 hours of office time at $15 per hour! This invoice was paid by the Lakeway Land Company who was then reimbursed by LMUD No.1.

In December of 1971, and article appeared in the Austin Statesman in which the Mayor of Austin, Roy Butler, was quoted as saying he was not happy seeing MUD’s sprouting up around Austin. It was his belief that this event would stunt Austin’s growth. It’s doubtful that today anyone familiar with Austin would claim that its growth had ever been stunted! Just as an interesting side note: in 1972, the Lakeway area was in Zip Code 78746, and it was an Austin address.

There was a Special Meeting of the Board on October 17, 1972 where an attorney by the name of Doran Eskew appeared before the Board and stated that he had been engaged by a group of citizens

News From Lakeway Municipal Utility Districtaround the Lakeway area. Their purpose was to defend against any annexation by LMUD No. 1. The President of the Board, Edward Plodzik stated that LMUD No.1 had no intentions of annexing any areas until and unless those areas actively sought out the help of the District. In that meeting, the tax rate for 1973 was announced at $0.25 per $100 of evaluation; a far cry from our 2015 rate of $0.1536 even without adjusting for 40+ years of inflation. Another interesting note: in January of 1973, there were 426 customers (compared to 4,200+ today) and the total LMUD No.1 billing was $6,645. The average bill per customer was $15 for two months.

On July 13, 1983 at a Regular Board meeting, the Directors voted to change the name to Lakeway Municipal Utility District and it has remained the same since that meeting. Originally, the thought was that there would be additional MUDs formed that would want to use the Lakeway MUD name. Since that did not happen, the ‘No.1’ was dropped.

We hope you have enjoyed this little look at history. We want to remind you that from May 1 through September 30 we are under Stage 2 Irrigation Restrictions. All customers are limited to two weekly waterings. Odd number addresses are Wednesday and Saturday, and even number addresses are Thursday and Sunday. Commercial customers may water on Tuesday and Friday. While we have had an abundance of rain the last few months, forecasters are predicting a hot and dry summer and fall. The Lohmann’s Ford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a Flag Day observance on June 14 at 10 a.m. at Heritage Park, 963 Lohmans Crossing Road, Lakeway. The program will include recognition of those who properly display the Flag of the United States of America followed by a flag retirement ceremony.

Due to limited seating, those attending are welcome to bring lawn chairs.

Evans led a planning committee that included Sally Barto, Judy Donohue, Sharon Rogers, Marianna Jacobs , Ann McCann, Susan Bryce, Lois Dodd, Linda Swan, Shelley Smith and Sandy Barbari, who coordinated invitations, decorations, supplies, beverages, and logistics.

Galloping Gourmets is an interest group of the Women's Club of Greater Lakeway.

Galloping Gourmets Salutes 100 with Free Lunch

The Lake Travis Community Library will kick off their annual summer reading program with a fun family friendly celebration on Saturday, June 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The event will feature children’s music by Mr. Will, the traveling baby animal petting zoo Tiny Tails to You!, tattoos, kids’ crafts, and special treats! Pick up your summer reading log at the kick-off event and read, read, read! All readers will win prizes from local businesses like Learning Express Toy Store, HEB, Sonic, and Chick-Fila.

Tweens, teens, and adults can also join in the fun with the frequent reader punch cards. Read books and attend programs and turn in your punch card to earn a free book and a chance to win prizes!

In addition to all of their regular monthly programs like story times, little yoga, Lego club, and chess club, the library will host Monday afternoon Library Camps for elementary aged children and a Tuesday afternoon Science Camp for ages 8-12. Tweens will find special programs for their age group at the library each Wednesday at 2 p.m. And the whole family can enjoy Family Flicks, featuring a G-rated new movie release, every Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Every Thursday, the library will host a special children’s performer. Highlights include:

Clown Bonzo Crunch – magic, juggling, comedy, and a whole barrel of fun with the Ringling Brother’ Circus Ambassador of Laughter! (June 9 at 2 p.m.)

Circus Chickendog—get ready for a crazy good time with this family friendly circus of six rescue dogs! (June 23 at 2 p.m.)

Dinosaur George—budding paleontologists will be amazed by this informative and entertaining program showcasing George’s vast prehistoric dinosaur knowledge. (July 7 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.)

Critterman—are you ready for a positively wild experience? Critterman and his traveling animal classroom will thrill with this fun and educational program. (July 21 at 2 p.m.)

Magician Cody Fisher—an exciting and educational mixture of comedy, magic, and science! (July 28 at 2 p.m.)

Most Fridays the library will host live music shows, including performances by Staci Gray, The Nowhere Men Beatles cover band, Joe McDermott, and Eddie Dickerson.

Readers will wrap up the summer reading program with a finish line party on Friday, July 29! Come visit the library this summer!

The Friends of the Lake Travis Community Library recently awarded Teen Service Scholarships to Brian Fanker, Aria Nicolai, and Cameron Sanders. Scholarships are granted annually to graduating senior volunteers who have dedicated at least 100 hours

of service to the library and plan to continue their education. Brian, Aria, and Cameron have been dedicated to the library over the past few years, often going beyond the call of duty and offering a combined 500 hours of service to the library!

“Each year I am more and more amazed at the quality of students the scholarship program attracts,” said Scholarship Committee Chair Jean Hennagin. “It is a pleasure getting to know these teen volunteers through the interview process and we are honored to be able to help launch their college careers.”

The Friends of the Lake Travis Community Library have awarded $46,500 in scholarships to teen volunteers since 2007.

will exhibit the photography of local artist Larry Elliott during the month of June.

Photography has been a life-long hobby for Elliott. His father’s gift of an old Argus 35 mm film camera

ignited his passion. The classic camera led to a custom, in-home darkroom and active participation in camera club competitions in his hometown in Michigan.

With the development of digital photography, Elliott now has unlimited options in processing and modifying photographic images. His images are more about color and design than faithful image reproduction, resulting in eye catching results. Over the last year, his style has evolved so that the images appear more like digital paintings than photographs. Elliott explains that the process opens up a new opportunity for expression in his photography.

The public is invited to view the display running from June 1st through June 29th. The artist will host a special reception on Sunday, June 5th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. A portion of all sale proceeds will benefit the library.
