AttendanceNew Rules, New Guidelines

Attendance to practices, gymnastics, games, and any other team events is mandatory. By signing up for the sideline season, athletes are making a commitment to their teammates and coaches that they will be there working with each other to get better every day. Athletes may have to miss an event from time to time. There are reasons for missing events and there are excuses for missing events. A reason is a justification for missing something that is generally explained ahead of time. Some things are more important than cheerleading and athletes can be excused from their cheer responsibilities in these instances provided there is proper communication. Excuses are copouts and do not justify an unexcused absence from cheer responsibilities.

Discipline Policy

The cheerleading program uses a “strike” policy to ensure effort, commitment and responsibility amongst its participants. Each athlete will receive a strike for being late to practice, missing a practice, or a scheduled event. If an athlete is a NO CALL, NO SHOW the athlete will be sitting a game, removed from a game, or scheduled event. We recognize that emergencies occur; however, this policy guarantees that judgments by the coaching staff will not be made based on individual situations.

Strike Policy

A tardy to practice, game, or team event will equal one strike. If you receive 3 strikes, you will sit 1 game or scheduled event deemed by the coaches. If you receive 2 strikes in the same week (i.e. Bounce, regular practice, game, event), you automatically sit the

upcoming game or scheduled event. Once you hit 5 total strikes, you will be asked to sit down with coaches to discuss your position on the team. If

strikes continue removal from the team is possible.

What counts as a strike? Strikes include, but not limited to the following: sitting for being sick not being prepared jewelry family or grad parties leaving early or arriving late drivers education

The strike policy is a necessary step in maintaining the success of Lakeland Cheerleading and has been proven a great help for teams in the past. One of the main goals of the program is to help athletes develop into respectful and responsible young women. Should an athlete have a personal problem, need advice, or need help with a situation regarding the sport or team, here are the steps to follow to properly approach the coaching staff:

1. Athlete speaks to captains/team leaders

2. Athlete speaks to coach

3. Parent speaks to coach

4. Athlete and parent meet with coach

5. Athlete, parent, coach meet with athletic director

In any situation where an athlete or parent has questions or concerns, we are to follow the 24hour rule. We ask athletes and parents to wait 24 hours prior to contacting their coach in regards to their questions or concerns. We are aware that frustration occurs; our goal is to teach our athletes that they may not always agree, but the proper way to handle confrontation, or their concerns. We encourage the athletes to speak to their peers, captains/team leaders, and always reach out to the coaching staff. As coaches, we expect to hear from the athletes about their concerns and work through them together. The coaching staff asks parents to encourage their daughters to reach out; we want to hear from the athletes, not the parents.

As a Lakeland Cheer Program Parent/Guardian, I agree to the following rules and procedures:

1. I will maintain open and positive communication as needed with LHS cheer coaches and volunteers. Please know your attitude has an impact on your athlete’s attitude and the overall team/program. 2. I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support & respect for all (including opposing teams) players, coaches/volunteers, and officials at events, practices, games and throughout the cheer season. The Lakeland Cheer Program strongly encourages: · All parent/supporters to sit together (which will be more impactful) · Yell really loud (to show our athletes how proud we are of them) · Wear our Lakeland spirit wear 3. I understand that I am financially responsible for all cheerleading fees and agree to pay for such within the time allotted. 4. I agree to participate in fundraising. 5. Parental attendance at parent meetings and parent permission slips are mandatory. 6. I accept responsibility for providing transportation for my athlete. 7. I understand my attendance and contributions are required at times. 8. I agree to bring food or donated items to games, team dinners, and/or fundraising events. It is important to keep our bodies nourished. 9. I understand schedules may change; however all practices, team events, and games are mandatory unless approved in advance by the coach. 10. I understand that once I commit my child, she is obligated to participate unless otherwise prohibited due to a documented medical issue, injury or unpreventable event or occurrence. No refunds are given. 11. I understand that any & all circumstances concerns and/or issues of any kind must be directed to my athlete’s coach. Ideally, your athlete will discuss this with their coach first; however, there may be special circumstances whereas it is appropriate for the parent to discuss concerns directly with the coach. 12. I understand my athlete’s placement is based upon their skills at that time. As weeks and months go on during the season, coaches are constantly evaluating those spots. Sideline Cheer is a privlege. Athletes must attend practice and events in order to participate at games. 13. I understand my athlete’s coach may restrict her participation based on any violation of the above agreement, or the rules and regulations of Huron Valley Schools.

Page 9: Lakeland Sideline Cheerleading Tryouts Fall 2016lakelandcheerteam.weebly.com/.../lhssidelinetryoutpacketupdated20… · Tryouts Fall 2016 The Lakeland Cheerleading Coaching Staff

Lakeland Cheer Program Rules & Guidelines 1. Each athlete must maintain a 2.0 GPA in order to participate. The coaching staff and athletic director will

decide upon academic probation. More importantly, academic success is expected from athletes representing the LHS Cheer program.

2. All athletes are required to bring to every practice a cheerleading binder containing a writing utensil, plain

paper, rules and regulations form, discipline policy form, cheer calendar, etc.

3. Physical forms dated after April 1st of the current year are necessary. LHS offers physicals done at the local middle schools for a minimal charge (TBA).

4. Each athlete and parent must register online and sign appropriate waivers in order to participate. If not signed

or registered after specific due date athletes will be asked to sit out and not participate until registered.

5. Athletes may not participate in another sport or activity that interferes with practices, gymnastics, games, etc.

6. Huron Valley Schools institute a player fee for all athletes participating in all sports. Please adhere to the due date in order to ensure participation.

7. All practices, gymnastics, games, meetings, unities, etc. are mandatory following the MHSAA sports start date.

Each athlete will be held accountable for attending practices, gymnastics, games, and team events..

8. All athletes must attend school for three hours in order to participate in games and other events including Fridays if the event is on the weekend.

9. Cheerleaders are expected to attend school the day after all events.

10. Athletes must arrive TEN MINUTES EARLY to every event. Punctuality is an important life skill that begins with

respecting the valuable time of coaches, teammates, and parents.

11. Please schedule all doctor, dentist, driver’s education classes, and family appointments around practice times, and competitions. Coaches will do the same. Given that cheerleading is a team sport in which individual attendance is imperative to team productivity, the attendance policy is of the utmost importance.

12. If a cheerleader is late or misses a practice after the MHSAA required season start date a strike will be given to

the athlete. See strike policy under the “Discipline” section.

13. If a cheerleader is ill and contagious, she must seek medical attention and may only return to practice with a signed medical note. However, it is highly recommended that if an athlete is not contagious she watch practice.

14. If an athlete is injured and cannot fully participate, a doctor’s note must be provided to the coach and athletic

trainer. Return to practice is dependent upon doctor permission.

15. Placement in performances is based upon each individual athlete’s performance and attitude at practice. If you are not in attendance for any reason, illness, etc., you may be removed from a performance/game.

16. All items purchased by the school (i.e. uniform) will remain property of the school and must be returned in a

timely manner and in reasonable condition. Failure to do so may result in the purchasing of such item payable to the athletic department.

17. Athletes are responsible for purchasing personal items (i.e. bodysuit) of which remain property of the athlete.

Page 10: Lakeland Sideline Cheerleading Tryouts Fall 2016lakelandcheerteam.weebly.com/.../lhssidelinetryoutpacketupdated20… · Tryouts Fall 2016 The Lakeland Cheerleading Coaching Staff

18. Each athlete must follow the state mandated safety guideline for hair, nails, and jewelry at all times. Failure to follow such rules puts individuals and other athletes at risk and will result in probationary status.

19. Excessive or unnatural looking hair and make up are prohibited, as this is a performancebased sport.

20. Each athlete is responsible for securing transportation to and from all practices, games, and team events. Buses

will be provided for away games. Athletes are required to ride bus to and from away games and not ask for other arranged transportation. No exceptions.

21. Inappropriate conduct, and language will not be tolerated through public display or social media. Public

displays of affection should not take place especially while wearing LHS/cheer attire.

22. Cell phone usage is prohibited at all cheer related activities. Cell phones will be collected at practices and events. Parents can contact coach for emergency purposes.

23. Cheerleaders are expected to follow the athletic code of conduct both in and out of school, including the use of

social media. If at any time a cheerleader is suspected of cyberbullying or has stated negative remarks regarding another cheerleader or student within the school community, that team member will be asked to meet with the coaches, parents, and the athletic director. This meeting may result in temporary suspension of practice and competitions, or even removal from the team.

24. It is the expectation of this program that all athletes be courteous and respectful at all times. Dignified

representation of team, school, and family is expected.

25. The Lakeland Cheer Program, like all high school sports, exists through the support and cooperation from families involved. It is expected that every athlete, with her family’s active support, be dedicated to her team. Family participation and support is expected.

26. Athletes and parents are asked to respect social media team pages and use only in a positive manner or they

will be removed from the group or website.

27. Athletes and parents are asked to respect their coaches’ time and their boundaries when contacting coaches during work hours or evening hours after practice.

28. Fundraising is mandatory for cheer team members and their family. Cheer is a selffunded sport. The team

must raise enough money for the team’s equipment, competitions, uniforms, apparel, banquet, and awards, etc. Athletes and parents are expected to attend mandatory fundraising events and participate in supervising events, and/or working concessions at games.

29. PLEASE REFER TO THE ATHLETIC CODE OF CONDUCT FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE INFORMATION AS IT WILL

NOT BE TOLERATED AND WILL RESULT IN AND IS NOT LIMITED TO EXPULSION FROM THE TEAM.
