I. Eligibility a. Prior to tryouts, through the 2018 season you must meet academic requirements

as outlined by the athletic department. b. You must have a current physical and completed edocs before tryouts. 2017-2018 physicals,

dated on or after April 1, 2017 are good until June 1, 2018. New physicals will be required for participation.

c. Physicals will be offered at AHS. Monday, April 30th 2018. More info to Come.

d. Constitution, financial contract, and teacher evaluations, available in are the tryout packet, areand due to the coaches or AHS Athletic Office by the date designated on the cover page.

e. All cheerleaders will be required to take the ImPACT test if not already done. This provides

information about baseline brain activity and is a reference point in the case of a concussion. f. Area 31 programs or other school classes that exceed normal school hours should not conflict

with practices. g. Cheerleading is a top priority and requires much dedication. There should be no conflicts with

jobs or other non-school activities. These will be all be considered Unexcused.

II. Membership & Expectations

i. Varsity and Competition Teams 1. The Varsity squad will consist of up to 20 members who will be required to attend all

summer activities, as well as all summer and fall competition practices and also must cheer the football season.

2. Cheerleaders will be expected to cheer all home and away football games. 3. Members trying out for the Varsity squad will be required to have at least a standing

back handspring and a round off back handspring (on the gym floor) and a round off back tuck (on the mats).

4. Members trying out for the Varsity squad are recommended to have or working towards skills: standing back tuck, standing bthe following ack handspring back tuck, and running back

handspring back tuck.

As Avon High School Cheerleaders their role is to represent their school,community, coaches and peers in the highest reguard. They are highlyvisible symbols of Avon High School, and should act with respect, goodsportsmanshipand high morals on and off of the field. They should bein good academic and behavioral standings. The cheerleading squads should excel in game day experiences, competetions and community events.

The 2018 Football Season wwill be made up of the following teams...-Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity/Competition Football Squads.

5. Any cheerleader who makes the varsity squad and loses a tumbling skill in which she hit during tryouts may be suspended from the routine/season until the skill is reacquired.

6. Any varsity member who does not maintain at least a standing back handspring and round off back handspring (floor) and round off back tuck (mats) will have one week to reacquire that skill. If the cheerleader has not regained her back handsprings, she has the option to cheer JV or sit out until the skill is reacquired. Lettering will be at the discretion of the coaching staff.

7 . Freshmen are eligible to make any squad.8. A captain and junior captain may be elected or senior duties may be assigned. Their

duties will include helping the coaches with duties and some decisions, keep positive morale for the team, and communicate to the team information from the coaches.

ii. Junior Varsity & Freshman 1. The JV and Freshman squads will consist of up to 15 members each and be required to

attend all football practices and cheer all home football games, according to their team.

2. The JV and Freshman squads may be combine during the summer and fall to participate in any possible game or competition at the coaches discretion. They will be required to all summer activities, including camp as well as fall practices.

3. Any cheerleader who makes the JV or Freshman squad and loses a tumbling skill in which she hit during tryouts may be suspended from the routine/season until the skill is reacquired.

iii.

All Squads & Seasons 1. A cheerleader must be available to attend each day/night of the home or away camp.

Participation is mandatory. 2. It is highly recommended that each cheerleader participates in tumbling classes.

3. A cheerleader must be available to practice daily (Monday-Friday) throughout the school year and be available to cheer games on any day (Monday-Saturday) while in season. Missing a practice of a competition week may result in being removed from the routine.

4. Practice times may vary from before school through evening hours, and all are considered mandatory.

7. It is the expectation that any skill thrown during tryouts is executed throughout the competition and football season. The only exception is recovery of an injury. The time allotted will be based on the progression of the Return to Play Form completed by a physician and AHS athletic training staff.

8. A cheerleader must be willing to cooperate with and be helpful to their coaches at all times. The actions of all involved should reflect the squad’s best interest.

9. Discipline issues in the classroom will have consequences at cheer practice. Chronic issues will lead to possible dismissal from the squad.

9. At any time during the season, a conference may be arranged by the cheerleader or coaches to discuss progress and means for improvement.

10. If a cheerleader resigns for anything other than family, schooling, or medical reasons after their placement on a squad, she may become ineligible to cheer in another season or year. “Family” reasons include the following, but not limited to: death of an immediate family member, relocation, or emergency circumstance on a case -by-case basis. “Medical” reasons include the following, but not limited to: illness resulting in extended absences from school or surgery with prolonged recovery.

11. If a cheerleader has doctor restrictions for an injury, she must have a Return to Play form completed by a physician and AHS athletic trainer before activity may resume.

12. Concussion injury must follow the following guidelines, as outlined by law: a. Sec. 4 A high school student athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or

head injury in a practice or game: i. Shall be removed from play at the time of the injury; and

ii. May not return to play until the student athlete has received a written clearance under section 5(a) of this chapter.

b. Sec. 5 (a) A high school student athlete who has been removed from play under section 4 of this chapter may not return to play until the student athlete: i. Is evaluated by a licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and

management of concussions and head injuries; and ii. Receives a written clearance to return to play from the health care provider

who evaluated the student athlete. c. Sec. 5 (b) A licensed health care provider who evaluates a student athlete under

subsection (a) may conduct the evaluation as a volunteer. A volunteer health care provider who in good faith and gratuitously authorizes a student athlete to return to play is not liable for civil damages resulting from an act or omission in the rendering of an evaluation, except for acts or omissions that constitute gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct.

III. Tryouts a. Open gyms will be conducted prior to tryouts for all candidates.

b. Tryouts will be closed to the public. Tryouts will be conducted in groups of three and in front

of the coaches and selected tryout judges. c. Team Selections will be a combination of Judges Scores that will be a combination of several of factors

including: learning and performing a chant and cheer, jumps, stunting, tunbling and gameday prescence.d. Cheerleaders will be required to perform necessary skills. The coaches will select the teams

based on these skills in regards to judge’s scores, the structure needed to have a cohesive stunting squad, and the athlete’s ability to work well with others including behavior and attitude. Attendance, grades and behavior will also be looked at as well as the teacher evaluations.

f. In an instance where a cheerleader is not selected to be on a team or on the team of her preference, the coaches will always make themselves available for discussion at the appropriate timeand manner.

IV. Practices a. A practice schedule for the school year will be provided and all are considered mandatory. b. A cheerleader must be present at school for part of the day in order to participate at practice.

Exceptions include college visits, funerals, court ordered visitations/appearances, and other school-related events approved at the coaching staff’s discretion.

c. Squad members are not released to practice stunts, tumbling, or jumps without the direct supervision of a coach.

d. No jewelry, food, or gum is allowed while cheering. Cell phones must be shut off or turned on silent. Offenses of the above are outlined in the consequences.

e. Cell phones must be kept away in bags in the locker rooms. f. Cheerleaders are expected to be dressed out at all practices unless prearranged by the coach.

This includes shirt, shorts, and cheerleading shoes, as well as hair pulled up and no jewlery. g. A cheerleader will be considered tardy if not dressed and ready to practice at the scheduled

time. Discipline for tardiness and unexcused absences is outlined in the consequences. Excessive tardiness and absences will be disciplined at the coaching staff’s discretion.

h. Cheerleaders may not leave practices early; it is the benefit of the entire squad to get the same workout (Please schedule appointments before practice begins or after practice is fini shed). The same consequences outlined by tardiness may be applied.

i. For all practices during the school year that end by 5:00 pm, tardiness and/or early dismissal for any reason may not be excused. Offenses for tardies or leaving early are outlined in t he consequences.

j. For all practices during the school year that begin or end at 5:30 pm or after, tardiness and/early dismissal for school may be excused, with notification and for no more than 15 minutes.

k. Doctor appointments should be scheduled around practices so no conflicts arise . Regular visits, dentist appts, etc may not be excused. Exceptions may be following up a cheerleading related injury incurred at AHS or school absence for illness.

l. The school does not notify the coaches of absences so it is the responsibility of each cheerleader to notify the head coach via email or phone message. If a cheerleader is unable to attend a practice, the coach should be notified prior to the practice. This includes, but is not limited to, illness and physical injury, death in the family, academic commitment, etc. Notification of absence does not necessarily mean this will be excused. This will be at the coach ing staff’s discretion.

m. Lack of notification for an excused or unexcused absence may result in consequences being applied.

n. Any dates that are “block out dates” will be mandatory with no all -star or other conflicts. These will typically be the two weeks before any competitions and will be distributed on the calendar in advance.

V. Game Expectations a. A schedule will be provided throughout the season. Cheerleaders will cheer at all assigned

games, pep sessions, and other events requested by the coaches. b. A cheerleader must be present at school for part of the day and completely dressed on game

day in order to cheer at an event that night. Exceptions include college visits, funerals, court ordered visitations/appearances, and other school-related events approved at the coaching staff’s discretion.

c. Cheerleaders are expected to be dressed out at all games unless prearranged by the coach. i. When a cheerleader is sitting out due to injury or as a cheer consequence, she should be

in full uniform or warm-up, sitting with the coach. No cell phones or socializing, but cheering with her squad.

ii. When a cheerleader is sitting out due to athletic code violation, she should not be in any cheer apparel and sitting with the coach.

d. A cheerleader will be considered tardy if not dressed and ready for warm-ups at the scheduled time. Discipline for tardiness and unexcused absences is outlined in the consequences. Excessive tardiness and absences will be disciplined at the coaching staff’s discretion. Heavy traffic, trains, and/or lack of transportation are not excusable so PLAN AHEAD!

e. Cheerleaders may not leave games early. The same consequences outlined by tardiness may be applied.

f. If a cheerleader is unable to attend a game, the coach should be notified prior to the game warm-up for any absence, or consequences may apply. This may include but is not limited to illness, death in the family, academic commitment, etc. Notification of absence does not necessarily mean this will be excused. This will be at the coaching staff’s discretion.

g. Cheerleaders may be individually evaluated during the season on game performance. Evaluations may be used for consideration in the following year’s varsity squad placement.

h. At games, the following is expected: i. No jewelry, food, gum, or cell phones are allowed while cheering.

ii. All bags and belongings will be put in the locker rooms during the game and can be picked up at the conclusion of the game.

iii. No bright or noticeable nail polish should be worn. You will be asked to remove it.Acceptable colors are clear, white French tip, or pale pink/nude. Consequences willbe addressed at the next practice.

iv. Squad members are not released to practice stunts, tumbling, or jumps without the direct supervision of a coach.

vi. Cheerleaders should be prepared for all practices,games competitions and events.Consequences for being unprepared will dealt with at the following practice.

vii. Have thorough knowledge of cheers and chants or you may be asked to sit the game. viii. Squad must be cheering 90% of each quarter including cheers, chants, spirit, etc. NO

socializing during cheer time!! Keep an equidistant, window formation on the sidelines, if space allows. Do not gather in groups and socialize with each other.

ix. When not cheering, stand with hands together behind your back to keep a clean presentation of the squad at all times. Cheering begins during pregame and ends after the final fight song.

x. Cheerleaders are to return from halftime at coach’s discretion.

xi. Skills thrown at tryouts are required to be thrown at games. Should a cheerleader lose a skill, she will have two weeks to demonstrate the skill during a game. If the skill cannot be demonstrated, her original tryout score may be adjusted to reflect curre nt tumbling ability. This may result in a change of squad placement.

VI. Transportation

a. It is the responsibility of all members to find transportation to practices, home cheering events,

or any other activity in which a bus is not provided. b. There will be a master roster of all cheerleaders passed out at the beginning of each season.

Cheerleaders should use this list for assistance with transportation. c. A bus will be provided for the away games that cheerleaders will attend. Cheerleaders must be

at the bus on time. d. All cheerleaders must ride the bus to and from away games. For exceptions, please talk to the

coach in advance. If the request is granted, there is a form that needs filled out prior to leaving the game.

e. For competitions, all cheerleaders will ride the bus to the location. If a cheerleader decides to ride home with a parent or guardian the proper form needs to befilled out prior to leaving the event.

VII. Uniforms a. Uniforms will be fitted and distributed in April/May. b. Uniform selection for games will be the responsibility of the coaches. c. Uniforms are only to be worn on the day of competitions, game day, and during games, unless

approved by the coach. When worn during the school day, warm-up pants, without the skirt, must be worn at all times. Failure to wear proper uniform will result in disciplinary action by the coach.

d. Care of uniforms is the responsibility of each cheerleader. Uniforms must be clean, pressed, and in good repair for every cheering event. If a uniform is damaged or misplaced, the cheerleader is responsible for replacing or repairing it.

e. ALTERATIONS MUST BE APPROVED BY THE COACH PRIOR TO THE ALTERATION. f. Uniforms must be returned to the coach, cleaned, and in good condition by the specific time

given by the coaches. g. An “end of season clean-up” day will be scheduled at the conclusion of football season.

Attendance is required or it may be considered as an unexcused absence to rollover into the next season of cheering, up to one year.

h. You may be subject to purchasing a new piece if not returned in good and original condition , as indicated on your uniform rental contract.

i. Cheerleading apparel and accessories must be purchased by the cheerleader. A cheerleader may reuse any item that is in good condition as long as those items stay in good condition. i. Cheerleading shoes will be chosen prior to the beginning of the season and must match

the entire squad. They should only be worn at practices, on game days, and during other cheering events as designated by the coaching staff.

ii. Briefs are boy-cut style and bodysuits may be a full or half bodysuit style. A set of bows will be put together for each girl so everyone will have matching bows. Do not purchase these on your own.

iii. Bags will be available to purchase. These bags can be embroidered with the cheerleader’s name.

iv. Socks will be purchased individually, but must be PLAIN, WHITE CREW socks, free of any logos or markings.

j. Any time your uniform is on, you need to wear your cheer shoes and hair up, matching, with a

bow. All cheerleaders need to look professional and game ready.

VIII. Awards a. After successful completion of cheering for a season, a cheerleader will receive the appropriate

AHS cheering award. A cheerleader must be in good standing and meet requirements. It is the coach’s discretion to determine whether a cheerleader will receive an award.

b. The JV and Freshmen members will receive participation awards. c. Eligible Varsity members will receive a letter for their first year lettering or a chevron for each

year after their first. d. Varsity members may also be eligible for plaque awards. These include, but not limited to

Attitude, and Most Valuable Player.

Leadership, Mental

IX. Conduct a. Warnings and discipline will be issued for failing to follow any of the rules listed in the

constitution. Disciplinary action will result when the coach/athletic director deems it necessary.

b. Disciplinary actions may be in the form of extra workouts, loss of game time, conference, suspension period, dismissal from squad, or anything the coaches/athletic director deems appropriate.

c. A cheerleader must:

d. Cheerleaders will follow the rules and regulations laid out in the AHS student handbook.

i. Follow rules in the AHS student handbook.

ii. Follow rules in the AHS cheerleading constitution. iii. Attend school regularly and maintain the academic requirement of athletics. iv. Perform all duties assigned by coach/athletic director.

X. Financing a. Each member is required to participate in one fundraiser per season. These monies are spent

with coach approval to offset the cost of transportation, practice pack items, choreography, equipment, etc.

b. Each member is required to pay dues to Mega Club for each season they are participating. Mega Club is a booster club specific to our cheerleading program. Mega Club is dependent on the involvement of all our parents. These monies will be spent with coach approval, on team gifts, decorations, spirit gimmicks, cheerleader gifts, etc.

c. Necessary cheer items will need to be purchased. If a cheerleader already has items that are in good condition, she will not have to purchase another one. You will receive an invoice after these items are ordered.

d. Estimates for all items are outlined in the financial contract. e. The payment schedule is outlined in the financial contract. f. Summer camps will be determined by the coaches wheter or not it will be a Home or Away

UCA Camp.

Cheerleading Consequences

Consequences will dealt with by the coach at the coaches discretion.

1. Nail polish at Games or Competitions- To be removed. Run 5 laps at the next practice.

2. Disrespect to the Coaches- Running/Conditioning. Possible meeting with parents.

3. Being late to a practice or game- Run 1 lap for each minute late.

4.Missing a practice (unexcused) - 1st Time-Benched for 1/2 of following Game. 2nd Time- Benched for Full Game. Possible dismissal.

5.Not being prepared for games, practices, competitions, or other events. Will be handled by the coach.

6.Absent from game (unexcused)- Sit the following Game. 2nd Time- Possible dismissal from squad.

7.Classroom Behavioral Issues will be dealt with at cheer at the coaches discretion.

8. All other disciplinary issues will be handled by the coaches.

Please give careful consideration to tryout out for a cheerleading position. All cheerleaders must be willing to commit a great deal of time and energy into making the program successful each season.

I have read and understand the rules and expectations set up in the Cheerleader Constitution and agree to abide by them if selected as an Avon Cheerleader.
