LAKE STEVENS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2018

Savannah Pratt is an 18-year-old Lake Stevens High School (LSHS) senior with many hobbies like

acting, singing and crafting. Pratt’s biggest hobby is serving the community she lives in. While she was growing up, Pratt’s grandmother was her biggest role model, and her memory serves as an inspiration for Pratt to do more for the community with kindness and compassion.

Pratt hasn’t stopped since—participating in many community programs like volunteering at the Lake Stevens Food Bank, the Lake Stevens Family Center, serving on mission trips, and being a member of the Lake Stevens Interact Rotary Club. In school Pratt is just as active, working with Link Crew, a team that helps Cavelero Mid High students prepare and transition into high school life, the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), where she serves as the Vice President of Community Service, and Big Viking Little Viking.

“I’m the coordinator of Big Viking Little Viking,” said Pratt. “We work with high-risk students in Lake Stevens elementary schools.”

This summer Pratt will take part in a mission trip to Panama with her church and will work with a medical team. Once Pratt returns to Washington, she will join the Pacific Lutheran University’s Class of 2022—with the goal of majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Music and Hispanic Studies.

Pratt has earned a varsity letter in community service for three years in a row through the United Way of Snohomish County. With the FCCLA Star Event (Students Taking Action with Recognition) “Early Childhood Education”, an event where individuals are tasked with child development and early childhood education concepts, Pratt went to regionals, state and nationals, where she earned high marks at each event.

Teachers like Kathy Hahn, Scott Bernstein, and Heidi Forslund have further inspired Pratt to become an elementary school teacher to help the generations to come—one class at a time.

“Things might not always go the way we planned, and bad things might come your way in the future. But life isn’t about the bad

things that happen to you, it is about the person you become because of them.”

NICK PENA

“Graduation is about the future and all the things that lie ahead. College, careers, families, the new friendships and the new memories!

I have been so honored and lucky to grow up with all of you and I’m excitedthat today is just the beginning. So all I want to leave you with today is good

luck. Good luck at college, work, or whatever you choose to pursue.”

Congratulations to the Class of 2018! On June 12 we presented 545 Lake Stevens High School

seniors with diplomas. HomeLink, our district’s home school cooperative, had six seniors who were honored at a schoolwide celebration on June 11.

Overall, this year’s graduates earned more than $1.7 million in scholarships. Students in the Class of 2018 aspire to be aviation mechanics, bio mathematicians, teachers, composers, physicians, and chemical, electrical and computer engineers. Many students are entering the trades and several will proudly serve our country in the Armed Forces. Some are attending local schools like the University of Washington and Everett Community College, while others are venturing farther from home to Texas Technical University and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

Graduation is an exciting time! This celebration allows us to share in the pride that hundreds of our students are moving into the next stage of their lives. This is a significant time for our graduates and their families, and I appreciate the hard work and dedication exhibited throughout their school careers. Thank you to the families, district staff members and our community for supporting our students on their path to success.

The end of the school year is also an important time to recognize the significant contributions of our staff. We are fortunate to have experienced

and capable employees. Each year, we recognize staff members who are retiring and those who have contributed 25 years and 40 years of service. This year, 15 retirees were honored, 15 employees reached 25 years of service and three employees reached 40 years of service. Their expertise and professionalism are very much appreciated.

I was honored to participate in the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the modernized and expanded Lake Stevens High School on June 8. On June 19 we held the Open House and Ribbon Cutting for the Early Learning Center and Stevens Creek Elementary School. These special events gave us another opportunity to thank our community for their support of our students and our schools. Thank you!

We will once again survey our families and community members with an annual survey. If you haven’t already received an email to participate, please watch for one shortly. You can also complete the survey through our district website. Your feedback is shared with all administrators at all schools and helps direct our path for teaching and learning, parent engagement and technology, while highlighting areas where we can improve.

I hope you have an enjoyable summer! We look forward to seeing you at welcome back events this fall, and for our first day of school on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Warm regards,

Amy Beth Cook, Ed. D. Superintendent

If you’ve visited Cavelero Mid High School recently you may have wondered what is wrong with the

exterior paint, which is peeling off in large sections. This has been an ongoing problem that began about two years after the building was constructed in 2007. It has been determined that the wrong paint was used by a subcontractor on the exterior of the building. That subcontractor has since gone out of business and Lake

Stevens School District has no recourse to have the problem fixed. A specialist was hired to test several paint options to determine what will look

the best and be the most robust for the long term. A solution has been selected, and the Board of Directors approved the project at its May 9 meeting. Work will take place this summer to remove the old exterior paint and to repaint Cavelero’s exterior.
