While the Lake Region has traditionally been considered the top waterfowl hunting area in North Dakota, it has developed in recent years into one of the most outstanding year-around recreation centers in the North Central region of the United States. This increased recreation interest has been brought up by the higher water level of Devils Lake, which has been rising steadily since the 1970s. Although the rising water has caused road and boat access problems, the fishing has been exceptional and continues to get better. The water level in the main lake has increased to approximately 60 feet deep and the shoreline has expanded to create excellent spawning conditions.

Just why the water level of Devils Lake has risen so remarkably in recent years is a matter of debate. Some consider it a natural factor resulting from a “high” cycle, following a low cycle of the 1930s during the dry years, which again occurred in the early 90s to a lesser degree and to a greater degree in the mid 90s. Others attribute rising water levels to years of man-made drainage activities in the counties north of Devils Lake.

Fishing, both summer and winter, is among the best in North Dakota, with such species as northern pike, walleyes, muskies, bluegills, perch and white bass abounding in the waters of Devils Lake, thanks to the stocking efforts of the North Dakota Game & Fish Department in recent years. Boating, regattas, camping and other outdoor activities all contribute to making the Lake Region the top recreation area that it is. Several other lakes in the area, such as Wood Lake and Cavanaugh Lake, as well as the very east end of Devils Lake, also offer good fishing and boating activity.

And of course, the big thing in the fall of the year throughout the Lake Region is the outstanding waterfowl hunting. Long known as one of the finest goose hunting areas on the continent, sportsmen from far and wide converge on the Lake Region in the fall to try their hand at taking their limits of ducks and geese.

In the winter, ice fishing takes on greater interest, both on Devils Lake and on some of the smaller lakes in the region. Ice fishermen travel many miles to get in on the action and are usually rewarded for their efforts. A fun wintertime festival is Shiverfest, a three-day event held in Devils Lake. A hockey tournament, curling, ice golf, kite flying and fishing tournament are some of the various activities to be experienced at the festival, typically held in late February. Snowmobiling has taken on greater emphasis during the winter, with regular snowmobile races, family outings sponsored by the Lake Region Snowmobile Club and other events.

Lake Region & Pembina Hills…

There are many ways to enjoy the Pembina Hills, which is really a gorge carved by the Pembina River. But not many have really taken the time to explore the area until recently. More and more people have been planning a trip through the area on their way to the Peace

south bordering the hills. Hunting is among the best in North Dakota. Wild turkeys, grouse, waterfowl, moose, deer and elk have found the Pembina Valley a haven. Some of the best moose and elk

hunting in North Dakota exists right here in this virtually unexplored wilderness. For the fisherman looking for a different kind of fun, fly fishing might be the thing for you. A relatively new sport to the Northern Plains, fly fishing was imported by western anglers. There are several spots where you can see this sport in action, such as Turtle River State Park near Grand Forks. The meandering Pembina River attracts canoeing enthusiasts to its secluded landscape. Hikers enjoy many of the pathways leading to the river and a favorite fishing spot. Horseback riders also enjoy the scenic terrain. Northern and central North Dakota are also home to many festivals and activities. Whether it’s the Steam Threshers Reunion in New Rockford, Snowfest in Edinberg, or Tree Lighting in Cavalier, there’s always a festive mood in the air no matter where you go. Shopping opportunities abound in the

Lake Region as well. Many national retail stores are available for your convenience, as well as the smaller specialized shops. If country life and small town hospitality are to your liking, you’ll find it in the Pembina Hill and Lake Region, and the Coteaus and Prairies. Many summer and fall activities take place in the New Rockford, Carrington and Harvey areas, as well as east of Devils Lake in the Lakota, Tolna, McVille, Park River, Cavalier, Grafton and Langdon areas. Hunting, fishing, camping and canoeing provide plenty of fun, as well as snow-mobiling. The festivities provide a pleasant change of pace to the every day rat race, as well as the recreational opportunities.

Sportsmen’s paradise for hunting and fishingMany other states would like to claim

their lakes abound with walleye, northern pike and perch, free from a large rough fish population. Unfortunatly, few areas can advertise a lake like Devils Lake. As fishing proceeds into fall, so comes the area hunt-ing season. The Devils Lake area provides good hunting for ducks and ex-ce l l en t snow goose hunting. Waterfowl are at t racted to the Lake Re-gion because of its small w e t l a n d s , prairie lakes and large stag-ing area and refuges. Area wetlands also provide the nec-essary habitat for white-tailed deer, pheasants and red fox, all of which are a favored prize to area and non-resident hunters. This variety of hunting

has brought hunters from Minnesota, Wis-consin, South Dakota, Iowa, Montana and Manitoba into the Devils Lake area.

When winter comes, the perch ice fishing season on the frozen wa-

ters of Devils Lake is also a big attraction. Area motels and

restaurants will once again welcome new faces into

the area, all talking about the jumbo yellow perch they hoisted through an eight-inch hole in the ice.

You can catch big ones in shallow water, too.

Bucks like this are hiding in the brush.

Since the ealy 1990’s its been a trying time for the Lake Region area and since the end of glaciation about 10,000 years ago, Devils Lake has fluctuated between spilling and being dry. Research indicates Devils Lake has overflowed into the Sheyenne River at least twice during the past 4,000 years and has spilled into the Stump Lakes several times concluding the natural condition for Devils Lake is either rising or falling, and the lake should not be expected to remain at any elevation for a long period of time. The lake now exceeds 135,000 acres from its normal size of around 40,000 acres. As in past years, millions of dollars are being spent to keep up with this “liquid monster” that never sleeps.

Several highways have been rerouted multiple times, most notably Highways 281, 57, 20, 19 & 2, and Minnewaukan and Churchs Ferry have seen the lake come practically to their doorstep.

The city and surrounding areas have responded well. State agencies, county governments and all other forms of local government have worked hard to solve

Devils Lake Water Conditionsthe problems. The solution is very complex, Devils Lake and Lake Region will become stronger and solve the problems and grow.

The Devils Lake Basin contributes to the Red Riv-er Basin only when the level of Devils Lake is greater than 1,458 feet (ft) above sea level (asl). At an eleva-tion of about 1,447 ft asl, Devils Lake begins to spill into Stump Lake, and at an elevation of about 1,458 ft asl, the combined lakes begin to spill through Tolna Coulee into the Sheyenne River.

No need for fishing rods!

You will see many roads built up with rock when out on the lake.

Activities such as snowmobiling, cross-coun-try skiing and snowshoeing, ice fishing, sledding and skating are favorite pastimes in areas includ-ing the scenic Pembina Gorge, the forested hills of the Turtle Mountains and the vast agricultural plains that blanket much of the state.

Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are especially popular. Miles of groomed, marked trails can be found on public and private lands.Snowmobiling

North Dakota has 10 snowmobile trails which cover 1,800 miles of groomed trails and 400 miles of ungroomed trails. Maintained, scenic paths wind through the beautiful forests of the Turtle Mountains and Pembina Gorge, the peaceful Sheyenne and Red River Valleys, on the forested lakes in the Devils Lake area and the prairie near Jamestown.

Ice FishingAnglers will find excellent ice fishing op-

portunities on North Dakota’s lakes and rivers, as yellow perch, northern pike and walleye bite through the winter. Ice fishing is especially pop-ular at Devils Lake, a world renowned perch fishery as well as Icelandic and Lake Metigoshe state parks.Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

North Dakota has an assor tment of cross-country ski trails designed to challenge novice and advanced skiers. These same trails are open to snowshoeing enthusiasts. Cross Ranch, Turtle River and Lake Metigoshe state parks offer excellent cross-country skiing opportunities when winter descends on North Dakota. While groomed trails can be found throughout the state, Graham’s Island State Park has a 3.2 mile groomed cross-country ski trail. Call 701-766-4015 for information. There are also areas where skiers can blaze their own trails through undisturbed snow.Downhill Skiing

If you’re a w a t e r -fowler or an angler, the high waters have set the s t age fo r a d e c a d e of quality hunting and fishing.

D u c k and goose hunters are delighted. With lots of surface water and the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), North Dakota leads the nation in duck production and come autumn, the skies will be dark with migrating ducks and geese.

Angling fortunes will fare well, too. Gi-gantic Devils Lake now covers about 100,000 acres and it’s full of walleyes, northern pike, white bass and the fish that made this lake famous, yellow perch. And, 90 minutes to the east, you can soak a bait in the Red River, arguably the best place on the continent to catch giant channel catfish.

In the fall, this is a fantastic place. There are ducks everywhere, and in October, stubble fields literally turn white with snow

geese.”Several hundred thousand snow and blue

geese stage here, one of the largest concen-trations of light geese in North America and it’s not hard to find a place to hunt.

In every direction from Devils Lake, there’s water…and…waterfowl. While vis-iting, hunters haul duck boats, most locals do their duck hunting over a spread of white goose decoys in fields.

That there are lots of snow geese is a given. Too many, in fact, according to most waterfowl biologists who have chronicled the growth of the mid-continent flock to its present three million birds. They know the flock must be reduced or they’ll surely eat

themselves out of a home on their breeding grounds where, in some cases, they’ve com-pletely denuded the fragile tundra.

And, there are few better places on earth in which to help cut their numbers somewhat. If there is a goose hunting mecca, it’s some-where around Devils Lake.

If you own enough decoys, you can easily go on your own. All you need to do is drive backroads in the late afternoon hours, scan-ning the sky for flocks going out to feed.

If you don’t own decoys, then you’ll want to consider a guided hunt. A number of guides and outfitters work out of the Devils Lake area and they know their stuff. They provide decoys, scouting and usually know most landowners, which facilitates obtaining permission.

There maybe a few inconveniences as a result of rising water which depends on the amount of moisture the lake receives, but the fishing and hunting in eastern North Dakota is worth an occasional modest delay in travel.

Devils Lake, which has doubled in size in recent years, has some great areas to fish a jig and minnow in October and November. The Bird Island area is one and each of the towers that cross the western portion of the lake has a rocky foundation. These areas hold big walleyes right up till freeze-up, which can occur as early as Thanksgiving.

Then, most folks forget waterfowl which have departed and focus instead on big yel-low perch.

Sullys Hill National Game Preserve is locat-ed on the south shore of Devils Lake in the heart of the Spirit Lake Nation Indian Reservation. The preserve consists of 1,674 acres rang-ing from wet-land marshes to wooded hills and is home to a myriad of migratory birds and big game.

Sullys Hill was named for General Alfred Sully, who was scheduled to meet up with a cavalry from Il-linois, but never showed up. The hill on which the cavalry was positioned was named in his honor.

Wooded, glacial moraine hills and native grasslands make the big game unit a picturesque home for bison, elk, white-tailed deer and other species of native wildlife. Here you may drive the big game auto tour route, use the picnic area and nature trail, observe various waterfowl species and reflect on North Dakota as it was. Bring your cameras and binoculars to better

Theodore Roosevelt’s Legacy—President Theodore Roosevelt, by signing a presidential proclamation, set aside Sullys Hill as a Nation-

March 3, 1931, Congress transferred Sullys Hill to the National Wildlife Refuge System where it would be maintained as a “Big Game Preserve, refuge and breeding grounds for wild animals and birds.”

Dakota. Careful regulation of hunting seasons and the deer’s natural wariness has allowed the white-tailed deer to maintain a healthy popu-

lation. The preserve’s herd of about 20-30 head are wild and must

be censused from the air in winter months.

Prairie Dogs—A colony of black-tailed prairie dogs was in-troduced in 1975. Originally, “dog towns” in North Dakota were found only west of the Missouri River. These members of the rodent family feed on a variety

of plants, which are mainly found within

their towns. The towns consist of an elaborate

system of underground tunnels in which their dens

are found. Since their holes were hazardous to livestock and they competed for range vegetation, ranchers

eliminated a majority of the colonies. These prairie dogs represent a living remnant of natural history.

Bison roam free within the boundaries of Sullys Hill National Game Preserve.

in western expansion and Native American culture. The herd was established in 1918 with just six bison. Now, its population ranges from 20-30 head.

Rocky Mountain Elk—Due to loss of habitat, settlement of the prairies and overhunting in the early 1900’s the elk became extinct in much of its former range. In 1917 fifteen elk were transported from Yel-lowstone National Park to Sullys Hill. With the develop-ment of modern game management, the elk population regained a viable status. Next to the moose, the elk is the largest member of the deer family. Because elk is a desirable species for hunting, game manage-ment is essential. There are approximately 25-40 elk within the preserve to remind us that they were once native to this area.

W h i t e - t a i l e d Deer—By 1900, the once abundant white-tailed deer was threatened with extinction in North

Waterfowl—Sullys Hill is home to a wide variety of waterfowl, such as wood ducks, Canada geese, white pelicans, mallards, hooded mergansers, and many other species native to the area. Management includes putting up artifi-cial nesting structures to provide secure nesting.

The giant Canada geese are semi-captive and nest on the islands provided in the lake. Each year some of the offspring join the fall migration south. Some of these are thought to return to this area to nest the following spring.

information and observation areas are located along the lake shore.

Other Wildlife—The preserve’s wildlife community contains many other species, including mammals such as fox, raccoons, skunks, weasels, mink, gray and fox squirrels, muskrats, rabbits and woodchucks. Many species of songbirds and shorebirds may be ob-served. Bald and golden eagles are occasionally seen hunting the area during the spring and fall migrations.

The auto tour route is open from May to October. The route is a four-mile, self-guided tour throughout Sullys Hill. It provides many wildlife viewing opportunities, so bring your binoculars. There is a charge per vehicle; frequent visitors may obtain an annual pass. Golden passports are accepted.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a sure-fire spot when it comes to ice fishing.

During the winter, as well as summer, fish move around all the time. All the commotion on top of the ice from fish houses, people and cars moves the fish away from the area, so they probably only bite a day or two in one spot. The fishermen must move around until they find them. During the winter, the most sought after fish is the yellow perch. Devils Lake is also populated with northern pike, walleye, white bass, black and white crappie and a few muskies.

Devils Lake attracts an astounding number

Ice fishing attracts many visitors

of ice fishermen. As many as 500 fish houses have been counted on the lake and up to 2,000 fishermen on weekends.

During the last few years, the Devils Lake Volunteer Fire Department has hosted one of the largest Ice Fishing Derbies the area has ever seen. Approximately 3,000 people will take to the ice during the derby, which will be held at Six Mile Bay January 26. In past years, the grand prize, held by a drawing of ticket holders, gave away big prizes, such as a pickup, ATV’s, etc. Tickets go on sale after October 1st.

Devils Lake fishing is as good as it getsDevils Lake is North Dakota’s largest natural

lake and is one of only a few closed basin lakes in the United States.

In past years, the Devils Lake water level has increased dramatically, flooding homes, roads, farm fields and trees. The high water has created untold hardships for people, but the lake’s fish are doing exceptionally well.

Walleye, white bass and northern pike are kings of this lake. Winter fishing for yellow perch is out-

standing, they are large in size and the quantity is good as well.

Devils Lake’s maximum depth is more than 65 feet, with an average depth of 15-20 feet. The basin structure is edged with rocky points, sand, weed beds and flooded timber, offering walleye plenty of hiding and ambush areas.

Devils Lake is also a well-known spring and fall staging area for thousands of snow geese and a variety of duck species - especially big-water-loving divers.

Pull up a lawn chair, break out your rod and enjoy the quality fishing at Devils Lake.

Unknown by many and used by few, the North Dakota sec-tion of the North Country Trail is about 200 miles of the 4,600-mile na-tional trail. The trail lies within the state and is rated among the most unique and scenic steps on the route through the historic Sheyenne National Grasslands, the sprawling Lonetree Wildlife Management Area and a portion of picturesque Lake Sakakawea State Park. A great way to get out and see the beauty of North Dakota. You can check out wildlife and the beauty of the prairie, things that people from other states consider a jewel. Its a pretty neat ex-perience. North Dakota’s contribution to the North Country Trail received an honor of sorts in Oc-tober 2009 when 71-year-old hiker M.J. Eberhart of Missouri, known on the trail as “Nimblewill Nomad,” completed the 4,600-mile trek from New York to North Dakota. Some of the nation’s most dedicated hikers ex-perienced the North Dakota section of the trail about a year ago when a North Country Trail Conference was held in the state. The North Country Trail, which is managed by the National Park Service, may soon become a target for some of the nation’s most veteran

hikers. In the long-distance hiking community the

“Triple Crown” of hiking consists of

the Appalation Trail, Continen-tal Divide Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. Those trails host a lot of hik-

ers annually, hik-ers who may soon

turn their attention to-ward greater quests such

as the imposing 4,600-mile-long North Country Trail.

The portion of the trail that crosses North Da-kota is young as trails go, barely seven years old. In addition, a lot of people don’t realize that the trail reaches all the way from the North Dakota/Minnesota border to Lake Sakakawea. It can be hiked all or in part, for one day or for several days.

Anybody can hike the trail, just put one foot in front of the other, enjoy and get great exercise. You don’t need a health club membership, just go out for a walk on the trail and get the same benefit. There’s also more peace of mind than there is being inside. One of the most natural portions of the trail is the 32-mile section that works its way through Lonetree WMA southwest of Harvey. Part of that trail is mowed and all of it is marked with recognizable North Country Trail markers. It is intended to be a primitive-type walking trail, not really a developed trail. It goes through some pretty neat habitat types, from native prai-rie grasses to tree plantings and wetlands. The land on which Lonetree WMA is lo-cated is owned by the Bureau of Reclamation and managed by Game & Fish. As part of that agreement, Game & Fish administers the trail. There are three primitive campgrounds on the trail within Lonetree. Those campgrounds are complete with fire rings, vault toilets and picnic tables, making them ideal destinations and rest-ing points for both casual and serious hikers. More information on the North Country Trail can be found at (www.northcountrytrail.org) or by calling Matt Davis at 388-1883. For more information specific to Lonetree WMA, contact [email protected] or call Kim Moen at 324-2000.

The Lon-etree WMA represents a unique wild-life manage-m e n t a n d recreation op-portunity for the people of North Dakota and its visi-tors. Lonetree WMA is locat-ed five miles southwest of Harvey in both Sheridan and Wells coun-ties. Manage-ment on Lonetree today has two (2) main goals. The first is to develop the site as a wildlife hab-itat, and the second is to make it accessible for the widest range of public use. Lonetree WMA has nearly 33,000 acres of land in which to loose oneself. There have been over 375 different species of birds which make their home in the

McHenry is located on Highway 20, nine miles north of the junction of Highways 200 and 20. It is surrounded by excellent goose and duck hunting and good grouse hunting. This is a relaxing and peaceful atmostphere in which to enjoy these outdoor activities.

There are over ten water fowl production areas within a ten mile radius of this community. There are many whites, blues, grey geese and an expand-ing number of giant Canadians. Duck hunting will be the best it has been in years.

Juanita Lake, Johnson Lake, Cherry Lake, Coe Lake, North and South Washington lakes hold large numbers of geese during the migration. While most of these lakes have federal producation areas, private landowners are very cooperative.

This area has an excellent number of whitetail deer. The large number of water fowl production areas are excellent for hunting. Finding a place to hunt will not be a problem. Camp Grafton South is a large 10,000-plus acre training range located on Highway 15 about ten miles northwest of McHen-ry. This area can be hunted by gaining permission from Camp Grafton in Devils Lake, through the North Dakota Army National Guard.

Lake Juanita and Red Willow Lake are fine winter fishing lakes in the local area. Perch, northerns and walleye being the most com-

popular with many wide open spaces to explore. Maps in this guide show the main trails

and communities where services are available.

McHenry has a full compliment of ser-vices available. Plan on spending some time in the area this fall and winter.

You’ll be sure to see and hear the grouse drumming in the McHenry area.

Keep your eyes out for ducks on the pond.

CooperstownCooperstown is a growing community in the cen-

tral part of North Dakota, located just 3 miles east of the junction of Hwys. 200 and 3. The community has an excellent business community split between farm-ing and manufacturing. Cooperstown Community Activities Authority is the organization which plans and schedules events throughout the year.

Hunters come from great distances to hunt deer and upland game near Cooperstown. With the Shey-enne River providing great cover for deer to hide and a place for birds to swim, Cooperstown is a great place to line up your fall hunting plans.

There are plenty of motels in the area and restau-rants to dine at. A convenience store is open early and closes late making it nice for grabbing supplies to last the whole hunting day.

Within thirty minutes of Cooperstown are two lakes, Red Willow Lake and Lake Ashtabula. Both are good for ice fishing for perch, walleye and northern.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has made it a lot easier to obtain hunting privileges. Remember, hunting is a privilege, not a right. Licenses can be obtained by calling 1-800-406-6409 using a credit card.

Remember, North Dakota is “hunter friendly,” so enjoy the outdoors in our state!

There is never a dull moment in our bus-tling rural community. If you are thinking of traveling to a destination off the beaten path for a family vacation, take the time to stop in at the ‘Central City’ of Carrington. It is a place where you will find country hospitali-ty, beautiful scenery and enjoy a restful and relaxing venture.

Indoors and out, there is plenty to see and do. Carrington has many unique shops if you are in the mood for some gift buying. A variety of restaurants offer excellent dining opportunities. There is the annual Craft & Gift Extravaganza every fall at the Armory as well as a Deer-Gun Show in March.

Another annual event, Christmas Around

the Town, is held early in December and features a lighted holiday parade (weather permitting). Many retailers are open extended evening hours and feature specials and offer tasty samples.

Only a few miles southwest of Carrington is a butte three hundred feet higher than the surrounding plains, known as ‘Hawk’s Nest.’

established in 1935 as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. It is an important link in a chain of refuges extending from the prairie lands of the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico.

Located along the James River in east central North Dakota, Arrowwood’s 15,934 acres are made up of lakes, marshes, prairie grasslands, wooded coulees, and cultivated fields.

As the river meanders its way across the prairie, it passes through four main water bodies — Arrow-wood, Mud, and Jim lakes, and Depuy Marsh. These are naturally occurring riv-erine lakes that have had control structures added at their outlets.

North Dakota ranks among the top states in the nation in number of national wildlife ref-uges. All North Dakota refuges, except Sullys Hill National Game Preserve are managed for waterfowl production. These refuges contain unique wetlands that sustain wildlife, produc-ing thousands of ducks and other water birds, and furnishing water, food and shelter for vast numbers of migratory ducks, geese and swans.

All 24 national refuges have opportunities for wildlife observation and enjoyment, where visitors can observe these magnificent animals in a scenic, natural environment. Several have auto tour routes, interpretive foot trails, canoe routes and other visitor facilities.

There are an additional 39 unstaffed refuges on private land under easement to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which provide sanctuaries for migrating waterfowl.

Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge—24 miles north of Jamestown

Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge is prehaps the most developed of the state’s ref-uges. Located north of Jamestown, Arrowwood encompasses nearly 20 miles of the James River. More than 250 species of birds are found here and bird lists and an auto tour brochure are available at refuge headquarters. Other popular activities are berry-picking, boating, fishing and some upland and big game hunting in the fall. Camping is generally prohibited, but excellent picnic areas abound.

Located on the south shore of Devils Lake in north central North Dakota, Sullys Hill National Game Preserve offers visitors one of the best opportunities for viewing American bison, elk, white-tailed deer, prairie dogs and 269 species of birds, at last count!

From the scenic overlook atop Sullys Hill, you can see the buildings of Fort Totten, a state historic site which is perhaps the best preserved of the frontier military outposts of the l9th cen-tury. The auto tour offers a spectacular view of massive Devils Lake, North Dakota’s largest natural lake. Hiking and cross-country ski trails are maintained for public use.

Pembina, the ear-liest Euro-American settlement in North Dakota, was the site of Fort Panbian, a Northwest Trading Company post estab-lished in 1797. The museum’s exhibits interpret prehistoric cultures, the fur trade, Metis buffalo hunters, military forts, steam-boats and early area history.

Native American people in the area were primarily Chip-pewa-Ojibwe, but also include Daco-tah, Assiniboine and Cree. They hunted buffalo and gathered wild rice as part of their subsistence. Trad-ers brought European goods to the area in the late 18th century to exchange for

Pembina has act ivi t ies year around. There is a nine-hole golf course , loca t -ed south of City Park. During the winter, there is snowmobiling, cross-coun-try skiing which is especially good along the area rivers.

This unique and scenic area which comprises the extreme northeastern corner

of the state provides a stately backdrop for a number of rec-reational opportuni-ties which include hunting, sightseeing, photography or just observing nature.

T h e P e m b i n a Gorge is unique in several ways. It en-velopes much of the largest undisturbed block of woodlands and the longest seg-ment of unaltered river valleys in the state. Additionally, it lies in a transition zone where three

major North American biomes; the central

grasslands, eastern deciduous forest and boreal forest, intersect. As their respective qualities combine, it becomes apparent that the Pembina Gorge is truly one of North America’s principle biological crossroads.

Bird feeders come in many shapes.

There are many areas in the Lake Region that are excellent for day hiking and backpacking. The variety of public lands in North Dakota provides unusual secenery and landscape diversity for hiking — day hikes on marked trails or through wilderness areas, walking self-guided nature trails with marked interpretive signing, backpacking along primitive trails or through unmarked back-country. Many of the better backpacking trails are in western North Dakota along the Little Missouri throughout the Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Old Post Office & Heritage House MuseumA stately monument from the early 20th cen-

tury in Devils Lake stands at 502 4th Street NE.The Old Post Office and Federal Building is a

three-story limestone structure built in the Greco style, and contains an ornate vaulted ceiling lobby, a second-floor courtroom trimmed out with quar-ter-sawed oak, and many local history displays throughout the building.

It was finished in April 1910 at a cost of $125,000, and still contains the original post office boxes and lobby fixtures. An early automobile owned by turn-of-the-century county resident Edward Murphy can be found on the first floor, as well as the Pioneer Daughters’ Library, many articles about 19th century Native Americans, old fire fighting equipment, and more.

The second floor is home to the pioneer law office, the old Skrede Barbershop, originally in Starkweather, furnishings from Chain Lake Lutheran Church, an antique home furnishings collection, and the beautiful federal courtroom. On the third floor, you can find a display room of the old railroad at Webster, a pioneer doctor’s office, and the Tom McLean Dental Office.

The Old Post Office Museum hosts many traveling exhibits, both historical and art-related, throughout the year. It is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, call 701-662-3701.

The Heritage House Museum is located at 416 6th Street. Containing over one dozen rooms plus an open beamed attic, this museum comprises much of the area’s early history up to around the 1950’s.

Also constructed in 1910, the house was origi-nally the official residence of the Ramsey County Sheriff and his family. On the south side of the house, there is a large jail cell, and a door in the kitchen area where meals were sent to the prisoner.

You can find many old toys, tools, school-house and laundry items, and musical instruments throughout the museum.

The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day and by appointment thereafter.

Just south of Devils Lake on Highway 57 is Camp Grafton, home of the North Dakota Army National Guard. This is a modern, year around combat engineer training facility. Called the “en-gineer school of the north,” this facility, other than Ft. Leonard Wood the active component school, is the finest training facility in the Army.

Camp Grafton also includes “down range” or Camp Grafton South, a large maneuver located 25 miles southeast of Devils Lake, in the eastern end of Eddy County. This location has the most modern weapons range in the Army. This precludes sending any people out of state to stay qualified in their weapons. This is also an excellent hunting

Camp Grafton

area and permission to hunt on it can be obtained from Camp headquarters.

Camp Grafton specializes in winter training for up to battalion-size units. There is an 800 person troop facility in the center of camp, designed for winter training. These engineer units can perform a mission in any type of weather, especially in a bitter cold environment.

The other exciting feature about Camp Graf-ton is its historical value. Tours are provided at the museum, the Edwards House and the entire camp — a modern army post yet full of history.

The state’s large engineer force trains at Camp Grafton throughout the year. This usually involves a two week requirement of annual training. There is also a full engineer training school in place to train reservists from all over the United States.

Camp Grafton is a well-kept training facility and is an integral part of the Lake Region econ-omy, providing millions of dollars to the area each year. Make it a place to visit. For tours, call 701-662-0200.

Kellys Slough NWRIn 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt estab-

lished Kellys Slough NWR “as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife.”

Since the 1960s, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has been purchasing lands around the original Refuge with Federal Duck Stamp money and developing these into waterfowl production areas (WPA). In 1991, the Service, with the help of Ducks Unlimited, began constructing several dikes and water control structures with funding from two North American Waterfowl Management Plan grants. Recent and future land purchases are aimed at acquiring land needed to develop more managed pools on the Refuge.

Kellys Slough National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was established to develop and manage a system of wetlands and grasslands that is unique to the Red River Valley. The Refuge supports a diversity of wetland and grassland wildlife, while providing for wildlife-dependent recreation, interpretation, and education. Kellys Slough NWR is located in the heart of the Red River Valley. The Refuge contains an intermittent stream that flows into the Turtle River, a tributary of the Red River.

Kellys Slough NWR is considered an excellent area to view migratory and breeding waterbirds. Twelve species of ducks have been found nesting on the Refuge. Giant Canada geese and a variety of shorebirds are also common on Kellys Slough NWR

The Refuge staff manage eight wet-land management pools, comprising 936 acres on the Refuge and adjacent WPAs. The remaining uplands are predominately grasslands.

Walhalla area provides great winter activitiesScenic Walhalla,

North Dakota, is a picturesque commu-nity nestled along the bend of the Pembina River just east of the colorful panorama of the Pembina Gorge and surrounding the hills and valleys. As the second-oldest community in the state, the town has also been blessed with a rich historical heritage. These two amenities — natural pristine beauty and rich colorful history —will provide an ex-citing and tremendous future for the friendly community!

There are many ways to enjoy the Pembina Hills, which is really a gorge carved by the Pembina River.

Hikers enjoy many of the pathways leading to the Pembina River and the Pembina Hills. One area to tempt the nature lover with hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, cross-country skiing and snow-mobiling is Tetrault Woods State Park.

Walhalla has been known as the “Moose Capital of North Dakota” because of the large concentration of moose in the area. Wild turkeys, ruff grouse,

waterfowl, blacknecked pheasant, moose, deer and elk have found the Pembina Hills a hav-en. Some of the best moose and elk hunting in North Dakota exists right here in this vir-tually unexplored wil-derness, which makes this area a “sportsmen’s paradise.”

A favorite time of the year is winter. Carved into the heavily wooded Pembina Hills is an excellent area for many kinds of winter fun. Whether it’s ski-ing, snowmobiling or

just snowshoeing through the woods the area has gained wide-spread popularity throughout North Dakota, Minnesota and Canada. The beautiful Pembina Gorge forms the impressive backdrop for the outdoor enthusiast.

Snowmobilers really find this an exciting vaca-tion spot. The Pembina Gorge Trail System has over 400 miles of state groomed trails, with additional trails being developed. The views along these trails are anything but ordinary. When one thinks of the flat, open lands of the region, these hilly and moun-tainous areas are breathtaking in the winter season.

Lots of powder in the Pembina Gorge area.

Icelandic State Park offers miles of trailsIcelandic State

Park, five miles west of Cavalier on N.D. Highway 5, has two cross-country ski trail loops.

Altogether they total about six miles. One loop is about 1.5 miles long. The other 4.5-mile loop is the more difficult of the two. The trails are machine-packed, d o u b l e - t r a c k groomed. Both loops start at the chalet, which is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

The chalet has restrooms, tables and chairs and fireplace and is located at the base of an awesome sledding hill, which is a real treat in the Red River Valley. The sledding hill receives more use than the cross-country trails and can easily have 50 to 75 people using it on any given weekend

or holiday.Both cross-country

ski trails cover wooded terrain with some open areas. The wooded ar-eas generally hold snow and are out of the wind, providing skiing oppor-tunities in more inclem-ent weather. They also provide good wildlife viewing opportunities.

Most of the trails go through the woods with hills offering moderate degrees of difficulty. All trails could be covered by a novice skier, with a couple of short, good-sized hill exceptions. All trails could be easily accessed by a moderate level skier. The open areas can lose their snow more readily.

Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, winter-ing birds – including nuthatches, black-capped chickadees, hairy woodpeckers and downy woodpeckers, fox squirrels and red squirrels. Be on the lookout for an occasional wild turkey, fox, coyote or moose. Bald eagles are some-times seen riding the thermal currents over the river almost any time of year.

The park’s cross-country ski trails are groomed every Friday in preparation for the weekend, snow conditions permitting. For more information contact the park, 265-4561, or e-mail [email protected].

Aneta, the queen City of the Upper Sheyenne, is located on Highway 32, five miles south of the junction of Highway 15. It has the longest run tur-key barbeque in the state. The 53rd annual will be held in June of 2013. That it’s the “world’s largest” has not been refuted!

The turkey barbeque began in 1960 when many farmers in the area raised turkeys. The feed com-panies put on a “turkey feed” for their customers and a tradition was born!

Over the years, it has been combined with the Summer Festival and the barbeque is always set for the 3rd Saturday in June at City Park. The meal is prepared and served in the park shelter with live entertainment performing in the gazebo.

The population of Aneta is 300, but on barbe-

Aneta que weekend that number grows to nearly 3,000 as folks gather to enjoy the food and festivities.

Fall and wintertime activities include excellent water fowl hunting, ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Aneta — a progressive town in central North Dakota.

The aroma and taste of barbequed turkey will keep you coming back for more.

Mountain is located 17 miles southwest of Cavalier and Highway 32. It is the oldest Icelandic community in North Dakota.

The oldest Icelandic Lutheran Church in North Dakota is located in Mountain and is still very active. There are several Icelandic festivals that happen in Mountain and throughout the area each year. The community has a beautiful park and camping area. Mountain is also close to Icelandic State Park, only 15 miles away. The park is another point of interest when visiting the area.

The Pembina Gorge is close and an excellent snowmobiling area along with other winter activ-ities.

Munich is located 34 miles north of Devils Lake. It is in the heart of the best water fowl hunting in North Dakota.

Munich is a progressive farming area. There are camping and park facilities available.
