WORK OF THE FORTNIGHT

HOODED RAINCOATS/ RAIN JACKETS (YEARS 1 – 6)

Now that Winter is here, it would be appreciated if parents could provide (to be kept in their child‘s bag should it be needed) either a hooded raincoat or rain jacket with the child‘s name on the item. This is needed should it be raining when the children go to and from the under cover area and the toilets. Please do not provide umbrellas.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

SUNSMART

X marks the spot so check your skin regularly to pick up any changes that might suggest a skin cancer. Look for any crusty,

non-healing sores, small lumps that are red, pale or pearly in colour and new spots, freckles or any moles that change in colour, thick-ness or shape over a period

of weeks to months (especially those that are dark brown to black, red or blue-black.

Head Lice

Head lice are tiny insect parasites that live on your head and feed on your scalp. Head lice are spread by head-to-head contact with another person who has head lice. This kind of contact includes doing group work, playing, or hugging.

Tips for preventing head lice Check your child’s hair regularly for head lice and eggs

(‗nits‘). Use a metal fine tooth ‗nit‘ comb and plenty of hair conditioner applied to the dry hair, to make the task easier and more effective. To help children sit still for this, offer distracting activities, e.g. play a favourite video, provide games, iPad apps, offer a head massage.

Tie long hair back. Braid long hair and/or put it up if possible.

Consider applying hair gel or mousse. These do not prevent or repel lice but may help to keep stray hair strands from contact with other heads.

Avoid sharing combs or brushes. Remind your child to avoid head-to-head contact with

other children, e.g. when working at the computer with others, or when playing, or hugging.

If your child has head lice please notify the teacher. For more information:

Why is a P&C so important?

Parents & Citizens’ (P&C) Associations have been recognised in WA law for nearly a century. P&Cs are held at a very high level of regard in the WA community. The goals of P&Cs are:

to foster strong relationships between the school and the community;

to help provide resources for the school; And

to promote interest in educational matters.

The P&C can’t survive without volunteers. No events, no fundraisers, no canteen or uniform shop. No providing for the school that all of our children attend.

P&C NEWS

Can you help? Our P&C (Parents and Citizens Association) would love to know your thoughts about a topic dear to our hearts; our children‘s health and safety. Our lovely school had a junior primary school playground installed in 2015 that is very popular with our children, however, as most of us would be aware, there‘s no shade over it to allow the children to play in the shade, especially in summer. Therefore we would like to resolve this important health and safety issue and preserve the life of the climbing frame also by providing a shade sail, preferably before next summer. However, our P&C Association doesn‘t have sufficient funds to install it and we need help in raising the funds. The school has also applied for several grants to support funding for shade but to date has been unsuccessful. If you are concerned about this issue, would like to know more and/or have ideas with raising the required funds to support this project, please come to our next P&C meeting on Monday 26 June. Our meetings are held in the staff room, starting at 3.15 p.m. and finish no later than 4.45 p.m. We look forward to seeing you then. Warmest regards, Anne MacQuarie, President of Lake Monger Primary School P&C.

The next meeting of the P&C will be held on Monday 26 June commencing at 3:15 pm in the conference room. We hope to see you there. (PLEASE NOTE: The new date and time of the meeting). A P&C Parent Information file is available for parent‘s to peruse in the front office.

WATERWISE FACT

Only shower as long as a 4 minute song!

Taking shorter showers is one of the easiest ways to save water, as we use 22% of our total household water in the shower alone! If we only shower as long as a 4 minute song we can save

a lot of water - what's your favourite tune?

COMMUNITY NEWS

Healthy Banana Bread! With this healthy banana bread recipe, you're only a few simple ingredients away from the best banana bread ever! It's made with whole wheat flour and naturally sweetened with honey or maple syrup. You can easily make this banana bread vegan or gluten free—check the recipe notes for details. Recipe yields 1 loaf.

INGREDIENTS ⅓ cup melted coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil or high quality vegetable oil*

½ cup honey or maple syrup

2 eggs

1 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 2½ medium or 2 large bananas)

¼ cup milk of choice or water

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

1¾ cups white whole wheat flour or regular whole wheat flour

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 165 degrees Celsius and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.

In a large bowl, beat the oil and honey together together with a whisk. Add the eggs and beat well, then whisk in the mashed bananas and milk. (If your coconut oil solidifies on contact with cold ingredients, simply let the bowl rest in a warm place for a few minutes, like on top of your stove, or warm it for about 10 seconds in the microwave.)

Add the baking soda, vanilla, salt and cinnamon, and whisk to blend. Lastly, switch to a big spoon and stir in the flour, just until combined. Some lumps are ok! If you're adding any additional mix-ins, gently fold them in now.

Pour the batter into your greased loaf pan and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon. If you'd like a pretty swirled effect, run the tip of a knife across the batter in a zig-zag pattern.

Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the bread cool in the loaf pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool for 20 minutes before slicing.
