because of his interest in environmental issues. He said keeping the lake pristine will be his main focus. Tom is the founder and owner of Service Electric Sales, a manufacturers’ representative agency for electrical products. Tom and Barbara have 4 grown children and 10 grandchildren. Tom is the chairman of the lakes committee. Kahne Simmons was elected to her first term on the board. Kahne has lived at Lake Lorman for 11 years. Kahne, who has been a community health professional for over twenty years, agreed to serve on the board because she believes it is part of our civic duty to take an interest in what’s going on in our community. She said she would get a better sense of what’s going on in the neighborhood by serving on the board. Kahne is the chairman of the roads committee. Lucky Chaplain, appointed last year to finish the second year of a board vacancy was elected to his first full term. He is now president of the board. Returning members were Bill Cox, Judy Lyons, and Mike Olivier. Bill Cox, last year’s secretary, will continue in that position. Bill posts the minutes of the board meetings at Lake Lorman website shortly after the meetings. Judy Lyons continues as the communications chair. Mike Olivier is taking over as treasurer; last year he was the roads chair.

How High is the Water Mama? How High is the Water Mama? How High is the Water Mama? How High is the Water Mama? Not high enough – but still rising. After the rains that ended February

5, water was still coming through the overflow pipe from the Little Lake. With a few more good spring rains lets hope the lake will be at the full (zero on gage) level. By the official gage at the clubhouse the lake on February 5 was still 16” below zero (full).

Thanks for all the prayers for rain. Don’t forget to say “thanks” and don’t stop praying!

Board Board Board Board HHHHas as as as NNNNew ew ew ew PPPPresidentresidentresidentresident Lucky Chaplain, who served as treasurer of the Lake Lorman board last year, has been selected as president this year. He said he wants to keep Lake Lorman on the path of opportunity so we can continue to grow and prosper as a lake community. In an interview he said he encourages residents with ideas and suggestions to let the board know. He also mentioned that prompt payment of the association dues enables the board to pay for the needs of the community. Several items of business from last year are still being pursued. Lucky said he plans to meet with the Department of Environmental Quality regarding our application to drill a well which was rejected in December. Lucky noted that in the rejection letter the DEQ had offered the board the opportunity to meet in person and discuss appealing the decision and other options we could consider. (At the January board meeting several lot owners raised objections to pursuing a well given the cost and environmental impact. Members of the board pointed out that other lot owners, deeply concerned about the low water level in the lake, have requested that the board pursue all options. The board wants to follow-up with the DEQ, while not actually committing Lake Lorman to pursue any particular course of action at this time.)

Lucky also reported that he will be meeting with a contractor to discuss the drain pipe. Last year Aqua Engineers informed the board that the old drain pipe has a rusty valve, creating a potentially serious problem. If the valve broke or rusted through, the lake could be drained. Lucky will meet with the contractor to discuss what is involved in filling the pipe with a concrete slurry and what it would cost. Lucky hopes to be able to report on these issues at the February board meeting.

Interview with Supervisor BanksInterview with Supervisor BanksInterview with Supervisor BanksInterview with Supervisor Banks Long-time supervisor Karl Banks is our new representative on the Madison County Board of Supervisors. As a result of redistricting based on the 2010 census, Lake Lorman residents are now in District 4, which is bordered by Livingston Road to County Line Road. Mr. Banks said in an interview that he and Gerald Steen, the new supervisor who represents District 3 which includes Lake Cavalier, have a meeting scheduled with the county fire coordinator to discuss the Southwest Fire District. He pointed out that the Southwest Fire Department is a new issue which he inherited because of the redistricting. He said he and Steen need to learn what the issues are and what needs to be done. He and Steen are also cooperating on the necessary road repairs for Joe Coker Road. The two have placed Coker Road on the county’s road plan so that funding will be made available. Supervisor Banks said he hopes to get the road fixed the entire length to the Hinds County boundary. Mr. Banks said he is very optimistic on the future of Madison County. It’s been a “tight wire act” since he’s been supervisor. The county has to make sure we live within our means by keeping spending down, and at the same time, provide benefits to the taxpayers. He said he is against raising taxes for any reason and wants to keep the fiscal affairs of the county on solid ground. He believes it is possible to maintain services, such as road maintenance and education funding. The supervisor noted that growth in the county is resuming to 2003-2004 growth levels based on valuations for residences and commercial buildings.

Matt Stuart staff writer for the Madison County Journal reported that the Madison County Board of Supervisors approved a road plan on Monday, February 6 that included:

• 1.75 miles of Coker Road to be overlaid for approximately $250,000. The overlay will run from Lake Cavalier to Robinson Springs Road

• 2.5 miles of Robinson Springs Road to receive new asphalt between Coker Road and Mississippi 463 at a cost of $1.5 million

• 3 miles of Livingston Road to be overlaid with asphalt between County Line Rd. and N. Livingston Road. The cost will be approximately $2 million

Speeding Still A ProblemSpeeding Still A ProblemSpeeding Still A ProblemSpeeding Still A Problem We are all guilty of driving too fast. We have had reports from Gate Seven of excessive speeding. Just recently a cat was hit and killed on that street (Lakeshore Drive)… and who can forget Daisy? Playing in the yard she made a few steps into the street in front of a speeding car. Please, for our selves, children and pets slow downslow downslow downslow down.

As the winter (what winter) draws to a close and spring approaches the Dauber is coming out of semi-hibernation to think about what spring, summer and fall bring to the lake. Daffodils of all types are beginning to bloom as well as the camellias and Carolina jasmine. It is time to start thinking about some annuals for this year. As we all know, bed preparation is very important for success. Turning in a little compost, manure, or commercial fertilizer to a depth of three to four inches and letting it settle in for a shower or two will help annuals to get off to a good start. By doing bed preparations now, when garden shops start getting in the “color annuals” you can start to plant... I always think “April Showers”.

If you are planning to begin a perennial bed, now is a good time to begin. Start small and add to it as years go on and you will have an ongoing garden with very little care and lots of enjoyment. Plants brought inside for the winter may be getting “the winter blues” – Reduced light affects the plants growing habits and indoor dry heat can take a toll on them. To counteract these conditions, make sure the plants have good drainage, good light and do not over water. More plants brought inside for the winter die from root rot rather than drought. One way to test for moisture is to stick a finger into the soil about one inch – if it is cool or damp – do not water. If you don’t like that technique a moisture meter is

inexpensive and keeps guess work down. The dirt dauber had an opportunity to work with the young men with Best Lawn and Landscaping who are maintaining our gates and dam. They are energetic, knowledgeable, courteous and willing to work with us to upgrade and make our gates more appealing. Shirley Grace and the dirt dauber will work with them in the future when fertilizing, spraying or planting is needed. Taylor Best is the owner of Best Lawn and Landscaping (phone 601-624-2429). He currently helps some lot owners in the area but is willing to take on new jobs. I can recommend him highly if you need yard work of any kind. Let’s get some exercise and beautify our homes at the same time - - kneel, bend, stoop, dig and plant – spring is coming!

Until next time,

The

Paradise Found!Paradise Found!Paradise Found!Paradise Found! by Sarah Lea Anglin

“We live in a paradise.” Dale and I spoke these words simultaneously as we sat at the kitchen table early last Sunday morning. As I sipped my Earl Gray, goldfinches, juncos, and white throated sparrows danced around our feeders, hopping from one to the next as they sampled the feast of the morning. A chickadee perched on a rail, a pine warbler sang from an elm. The bright splash of a cardinal’s red painted a visual symphony against the muted browns, grays, and whites of the woods. A dove cooed softly from the branch of an oak.

This day was cold, but only a few days ago the weather was warm, resembling that of April, and rain fell in sheets as it teased the daffodils to begin to awaken from their winter slumber. Nature’s wonders are as mysterious as they are beautiful, and life at Lake Lorman is full of them. In the five years I’ve lived at the Lake, I’ve cataloged (with complete unscientific precision) the varieties of birds that come with the seasons, the dates various flowers bloom, the wild mammals that roam the woods and occasionally raid the feeders or devour the gardens, and even the date (early February) and location (not telling!) where I catch my first bass each year with my favorite pumpkin baby brush hog. Lake Lorman is, for me, a nature lover’s paradise. We live here because we love the outdoors, because we love the serenity and calm that comes with a quiet community in the woods, because we can walk along the dam or through the neighborhood and experience whichever particular forms of nature we choose to see on any one day. We never fail to be rewarded on our walks with something extraordinary—pileated woodpeckers calling, deer peering around trees as they think we cannot see them, a view of bass or sunfish in the water, beautiful gardens that so many of our neighbors keep. We never wonder what “paradise” is; we live in it.

We have been asked to once again remind folks about no wake areas on the lake. The Lake Lorman Boating Rules plainly states that boats are not to leave a wake outside the buoys and in the coves. This is a recurring problem which causes damage to property through erosion of sea walls and is especially hazardous when water levels are low or high. Tom Warriner says the new boat stickers are being made and will be available soon.
