THIS MONTH’S  silver starJANICE SANDFORD

Janice Sandford was chosen for her optimistic outlook on life despite a number of recent tragic events. She lost her husband of 35 years 2 months ago, and was diagnosed and hospitalized with severe blood clots in her left leg. She could no longer walk and spent a month in a rehab facility before entering LBW’s Assisted Living. Her blood clots have not entirely disappeared, but Janice is very optimistic that she will become a permanent resident in Independent Living and sell her house in Elk Gove Village.

At LBW, she joined the Walking for Health Group, right after she moved in. At first, she walked with the help of a walker, but now she parks it at the entrance of the Canlan Sports Complex walking track and manages to saunter 4 laps (1 mile) unassisted. Janice considers LBW a great place to recuperate, not only physically but also spiritually. “I am trying to participate in everything LBW has to offer,” she told us during the interview. “During my first two weeks, I joined Linda’s exercise class, played bingo, Wii bowling, took a trip to a bakery, a middle school concert, shopping trips to Walmart, Jewel, and Home Depot. I signed up to sponsor one of the patio flower pots together with my grandson.”Janice contributes her optimistic outlook on life to a great childhood, attending good schools in Elk Grove Village and spending happy summers on family farms in rural Virginia. It was like summer camp with cousins, she recalls fondly. She lived in Elk Grove Village all her life and worked as the secretary for the library and the Library Board for 30 years. Janice has two sons — “They are the best thing that came out of my marriage. I am very proud and lucky to have them. My family is very supportive and I also have a 2-year-old grandson.” Janice wants to thank the LBW staff and residents for their continued support, friendship and warm welcome! Janice is a good example of Sue Smith’s quote in the February issue of this newsletter: “Enjoy your life at LBW! Don’t spend all your time sitting in your apartment. Join LBW activities and have fun!”

CINDY SULLIVAN HACKMAN

Hi, My name is Cindy and I have lived in Cary for the past 32 years where we raised our two children. I was born in Michigan and went to Michigan State University where I trained in special education. I taught classes for the hearing impaired and visually impaired in Colorado Springs at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind, and in Cincinnati Public Schools. I also taught high school learning disability classes here in District 155 until I retired 15 years ago after 30 years of teaching. My husband, Mike, was a project manager at Hewlett-Packard and he is also retired.

Our daughter, Michelle, is an opera singer and along with running her private voice studio in Chicago and this area, she sings in operas and musicals in the U.S. and Europe. Our son, Steven, is an orchestra conductor/composer/producer and arranger living in New York City. He conducts many professional orchestras with programs he has created in classical and contemporary music, both in the U.S. and Canada. We are fortunate to be able to travel to see both of our kids perform and we do this often. Along with traveling and volunteering, I enjoy reading, knitting, gardening, and Pilates. I have also done a lot of quilting over the years. I have been a volunteer at Lake Barrington Woods for a year and a half, and it is something I truly enjoy!
