LANDSCAPE
Along with the diverse elements of forestpreserve, expansive perennial beds, andstately trees located throughout the community, the LBS landscape also con-tains 83 natural areas which complementthe manicured landscape. In 2014, theLBCHA Master Board approved a five-year contract with Pizzo and Associatesto restore these degraded natural areas toa colorful, native landscape.
Each year, Pizzo’s crews employ a variety of restoration management techniques, including selective herbicide applica-tions, hand pulling and brush removal, to remove undesirableplant species from approximately 4 acres per year. In late fallof each year, the crews apply the power of controlled burningto the same acreage they’ve been prepping throughout the sea-son. Immediately following the controlled burn, they seed theacreage with a custom mix of native seed, including grasses, sedges and numerous flowering plant species.
The results of this effort haven’t been apparent to most residents, because native plant seed doesn’t germinate immediately, and native seedlings put their energy into rootdevelopment during their first two years following germi-nation. This year, however, Pizzo has advised us that theyexpect to see some flowering occur among the areas seededin 2014, the first restoration season. This exciting news indicates that the native plants are beginning to reach maturity and that the appearance of these areas will continue to improve each year.
The heart of the LBS landscape is, of course, Lake Barring-ton. In 2015, LBS approved an alum treatment of Lake Barrington at the suggestion of Aron & Associates. KathyAron is the Association’s Lake Consultant and has guidedaquatic management of Lake Barrington for many years. She is the “Lady of the Lake,” familiar with all bumps andblooms that float up in the lake.
Despite the success of last year’s alum treatment, Aron & Associates as well as numerous assessments conducted by theLake County Health Department have highlighted additionalissues impacting the long-term health of our lake’s ecosystem, specifically non-point pollution sources such as runoff anderosion. To reduce the level of nutrients entering the lake fromthese sources and maintain the excellent condition of LakeBarrington, LBCHA has implemented a swale improvementprogram. Beginning in 2015, we first focused on large stormswales that empty into the lake where we installed natural barriers to filter the pollutants contained in the runoff fromroads and culverts. Over time, the Association plans to expandthese natural barriers to the shoreline edges of the lake. Reducing this pollution complements the restoration of our
natural areas and contributes to a stable, sustainable futurefor the LBS landscape.
Please join me and your representatives from the Landscapeand Lake and Ponds Commissions for an in-depth look at theprogress of both of these initiatives on Saturday, July 23. Representatives from Pizzo and Associates and Aron & Associates will be on hand to point out the improvements theysee, discuss the techniques they use to achieve results, and an-swer your questions. Tours will be given on foot and also bythe pontoon boat, which will offer rotating cruises led by oneof the experts — take one tour or both. You’ll learn to identifythose areas which have already undergone initial restorationefforts and where progress is being monitored and maintained,as well as those areas which are slated for restoration workthis year. After a brief introduction at 9:00 AM, tours willbegin at 9:15AM and continue every half hour until the finalboat tour departs at 11:15 AM. Meet at the Marina boathouse.I look forward to seeing you there.

Golf Golf GolfSOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOWSummertime leads to thoughts of vaca-tions and exotic travel destinations formost of us. Our “Mystery Man for July”has already been there, done that, and hasexplored so many interesting destinations.
“Our LBS Man” was raised on theSoutheast side of Chicago among theburgeoning industries of steel mills, auto assembly plants and various fac-tories. This made him very interested inhow things worked. As a teenager hewas recognized for his skill in math, and before graduating high school, heworked in the meteorology lab at theUniversity of Chicago simulating the jetstream winds around the earth on oneof the first main frame computers.
Want to know more about his engi-neering focus?
The Navy noticed him and sent him tothe Illinois Institute of Technology for hisengineering degree. They also trained himon a destroyer in the Pacific, on a fighterjet trainer in Texas, and with the Marinesin Virginia. He may be one of the fewLBS residents who has had ejection seattraining! After serving with the Navy’sCivil Engineering Corps, our neighbor re-turned to Chicago and joined a designfirm working on ComEd’s nearby nuclear
you want the girl you have to court themother.” So he tried his best.
Our “LBS Honoree” said, “having for-gotten the rituals of dating I bought hera bicycle for Christmas knowing theywere shiny and hopefully it would catchher eye.” He also bought one for himselfto have some alone time riding together. Now, taking a big chance, I popped thequestion and she accepted my proposal!”They wed in 1985 and the new Bridesaid to her handsome Groom, “You canbuy any larger home you want as long asit’s within the fence of LBS. Needless tosay, they’ve been happily married in ourneighborhood for 31 years.
Ever the Engineer…did you know he ledthe design team when the Chicago Riverbroke into the old freight tunnel? This ledto dinners with Mayor Daley and Gover-nor Edgar and becoming President of theAmerican Council of Engineering Com-panies in Illinois and later as their Na-tional Director for Illinois. FEMA thenasked him to train in California for dis-aster mitigation. (even more school!)
A few more clues to cinch your guess?

THE “INS AND OUTS” OF REPLACING YOUR DOORSIf you need to replace one of your exterior doors, the place tostart is with an “Application for Architectural Review” form andthe instruction packet that applies to your particular project. Both are available at the Management Office and online. Fill outthe entire Application and attach the documents it calls for, thensubmit it to the Office. They will forward it to your condo boardfor review. Do not install anything until you have been notifiedthat your condo board has approved your project.
Sliding patio doors are treated as window replacements, notdoors, and have their own set of instructions. Doors inside yourunit are entirely your choice. For exterior doors—front door, sideentry doors to garages and storm/screen doors, read the instruc-tions for each project to see which styles are acceptable at LBSand which are not. It’s also a good idea to check with your condoboard to see if they have any additional requirements.
In general, there is not a problem if you are replacing your exist-ing door with one of the same style. However, if you are thinkingof making a change in its appearance, gather some informationabout the one you are considering, including a picture, to showto your board for their approval before you do anything else. You can usually find diagrams or photos in the manufacturer’sbrochures from contractors or where doors are sold. Don’t makeany purchases or sign a contract for installation until you’re sureyour condo will approve your Application when it’s complete.
As for color, you can change the paint color of your front doorif you wish, as long as you use a color from the list of those ac-ceptable in your condo and match your neighbors. In carriagehouses and manor homes, your front door must match yourneighbors’ doors. Storm/screen door exteriors must be darkbrown or bronze, and side doors must be painted according toyour condo’s rules, usually the same color as your siding.
For more information, talk to your Condo Manager in the Of-fice, or to the Architectural Commission representative fromyour condo.
LINE DANCINGThe first “class” of LBS Line Dancing happened on June6th. 15 individuals attended and enjoyed the music, dancesteps, such as Jazz box, Shuffle, and Grapevine. A great be-ginning for LBS’s newest club!
There is room for more dancers / or would be dancers.
Join us Mondays at The Lodge from 12:00-1:30pm!

Need a Ride? New driving service offered by LBS volunteers in partnership with BACOA
(Barrington Area Council on Aging)
There is a new program being offered to the residents ofLake Barrington Shores. Volunteer drivers (all who havebeen vetted and are insured) are available to drive you todoctor, shopping, errands, etc. located within a 15 mile radius of Lake Barrington Shores.
The cost is $5 round trip payable to your driver directly. Theproceeds for this service go directly to the Barrington AreaCouncil on Aging to support their programming.
Call BACOA at to arrange this service at 847-381-5030.Advanced notice is required and rides must be prearranged.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT GARAGE DOORS
Each condo has selected one specific model from one par-ticular manufacturer to be used throughout that condo, and that is the only garage door you can install. To insurea uniform appearance and consistency of design, there isno choice about this. There are also differences in how eachcondo has decided when their garage doors will be re-placed, as well as who has responsibility for the cost of re-placement. It is absolutely essential that you find out whatthe procedure is in your particular condo before calling anoutside company to do any work. In case of an emergencyreplacement, call the Management Office or someone onyour condo board for assistance.

LADIES’ 9 HOLE GOLF LEAGUESpring certainly posed some challenginggolf! On Thursday, May 12, the LadiesNine Hole League slipped and slosheddown the fairways due to a storm thenight before. But 22 golfers accepted thechallenge of the Spring Cleaning game. After completing the round, each playerremoved the scores of the three worstholes. This helped a great deal as therewas little bounce and roll on the rainsoaked course. The day provided manylaughs and challenges.

This “Mystery Man” is focused, has agreat memory, good sense of humor, and loves to work with his hands. Hehas bred and raised marine fish andcoral down to the detail of a laboratoryraising the phytoplankton and zoo-plankton for the baby fish to eat. Acurrent hobby down at the beach is hishand made radio controlled boats.
“Life is a wonderful challenge.” He’sproud of his wife, daughter, son-in-law,and of course his three grandchildrenwho are each learning to excel in law, nursing, and in sports. He is gratefulfor his families health, future travelplans, and for his next, fun, winter en-gineering project that “he promises notto start early”!
When you see this accomplished man, don’t forget to say “Hello Neighbor”—you’ll find the conversation that follows a lot of fun, very enlightening, and highly enjoyable!
Check your guess on page 14.
power plants. He found this a bit tediousafter the Navy, so he returned to schoolfor a graduate degree in a new emergingfield, Environmental Engineering.
A small facet of that curriculum foundhis interest, the hydraulic simulation ofthe flow of major rivers. “Mr. LBS forJuly” joined an international engineeringfirm specializing in water projects in de-veloping countries. Just like in the Navy,“Our Man” was again traveling theworld! To satisfy his inquisitive nature,he trained with the U.S. Geological Sur-vey measuring suspended river sedimentsand modeling their impact on reservoirs.Have you been in a Gondola under aninterstate highway suspended over theMississippi River dropping a torpedoshaped sediment sampler from a winchbetween the barge traffic? Next it wasoff to Bolivia and Ecuador to plan hy-droelectric projects high in the Andes.
This curious and successful engineercame to LBS in 1984 from Saudi Arabiawhere he led a design team to develop ademonstration farm about the size of In-diana. About that time, while living thelife of a bachelor at LBS, he met a verycute journalist. She stole his heart…buthe had to work hard to win hers. Whiletrying to win her heart, the best advicehe received was from his CEO’s wife, “If
